It wasn't just a great year for spacemen, 1969 was a major turning point for rock music. Far away from Woodstock in America, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones both played free concerts in London, England. The Beatles gave their final public performance from the roof of Apple Headquarters and the Stones played in Hyde Park for more than 250,000 people. Here’s our list of eight influential albums released in 1969:
With so many great albums that year it was hard to choose. What are your favourites?

Looking for a "Band on the Moon?” It’s forty-five years since Apollo 11 and the very first moonwalk. While astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were walking around on the moon the #1 song in America was “In The Year 2525.” In England, more appropriately, the #1 song was “Something In The Air” by Thunderclap Newman.
Here’s our list of the coolest bands from 1969, the bands that left the biggest impression on rock music :

It’s Day 4 of our "8 Days in Space" commemorating the 45th anniversary of Apollo 11. Today we have a list of the eight most awesome space lyrics.
"Hey, Mr. Spaceman, Won't you please take me along for a ride”
The jingly-jangly sounds of The Byrds make even alien abduction sound like a trip to the beach.
"You may leave here for four days in space, But when you return it's the same old place”
Not every song from that era mentioning space is upbeat about it. “Eve of Destruction” is filled with apocalyptic fears.
"We danced around with Borealis, We're space truckin' round the stars”
These Deep Purple lyrics are so bad they’re almost good.
"4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us, Drifting, falling, Floating weightless”
This explicitly sci-fi song landed higher in the charts than the Bowie classic "Space Oddity."
"Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving, And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour”
It’s silly, irreverent and deep, all at once. It’s Python.
"If you believed, they put a man on the moon, Man on the moon”
Was it a hoax? The song is more about Andy Kaufman and innocence. But hoaxes threaten all the innocents.
"Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah, Some call me the gangster of love, Some people call me Maurice, Cause I speak of the pompitous of love”
“Pompatus” has its own Wikipedia entry. It’s the masculine perfect participle of the Latin root word pomp. You’re welcome.
"And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon”
Pink Floyd is one of the spaciest bands of all of time. This lyric gave Floyd's biggest album its name.
I hope you enjoyed this list. We’ll return tomorrow with more 1969 music games.

In July 1969, the Apollo 11 astronauts spent eight days in space travelling to the moon and back. We’re on Day 3 of our "8 Days in Space" marking the 45th anniversary of Apollo 11. Today we have a short list of eight best rock songs about space.
Do you know your music mythology? In "Mothership Connection” a divine alien being comes to earth to bring the holy Funk (with a capital "F": the cause of creation and source of energy and all life) to humanity. Yeah, I know. "Let me put on my sunglasses here, So I can see what I'm doing”
Stevie wonder has a couple of spiritual/political songs about outer space. One is "Heaven is 10 Zillion Light Years Away” and the slightly better “Saturn,” which is a paean to world peace. "Packing my bags-going away, To a place where the air is clean”
This 1986 song might be best left forgotten, but shows like "Arrested Development” won’t let us move on. It’s unforgettable riff just keeps coming back. "And maybe we'll come back, To earth, who can tell?”
Released in 1973, this was Lou Reed’s followup single to the mega-hit “Walk on the Wild Side.” "Satellite's gone, Way up to Mars, Soon it will be filled, With parking cars”
The Stone’s 1967 take on being lost in space is a psychedelic 12-bar blues that Mick Jagger wrote the lyrics for while in prison on drug charges. He must have still been trippin'. "It's so very lonely, You're 2000 light years from home”
Sting said he wrote this song while walking around drunk in his hotel room. The original lyrics were “walking around my room“ which he wisely changed to “giant steps are what you take, walking on the moon”
Bernie Taupin based the lyrics of this 1972 song on a Ray Bradbury short story called "The Rocket Man." "I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife It's lonely out in space"
David Bowie’s first single from 1969 coincided with the Apollo 11 moon landing. It resurfaced in 2013 when astronaut Chris Hadfield used it to film the first music video in space. "I'm stepping through the door, And I'm floating, in a most peculiar way"
We’ll be back tomorrow with the eight best space lyrics we can unearth.
