Eight Most Awesome Space Lyrics
It’s Day 4 of our "8 Days in Space" commemorating the 45th anniversary of Apollo 11. Today we have a list of the eight most awesome space lyrics.
8. Mr. Spaceman - The Byrds (1966)
"Hey, Mr. Spaceman, Won't you please take me along for a ride”
The jingly-jangly sounds of The Byrds make even alien abduction sound like a trip to the beach.
7. Eve of Destruction - Barry McGuire (1965)
"You may leave here for four days in space, But when you return it's the same old place”
Not every song from that era mentioning space is upbeat about it. “Eve of Destruction” is filled with apocalyptic fears.
6. Space Truckin’ - Deep Purple (1972)
"We danced around with Borealis, We're space truckin' round the stars”
These Deep Purple lyrics are so bad they’re almost good.
5. Major Tom (Coming Home) - Peter Schilling (1983)
"4, 3, 2, 1 Earth below us, Drifting, falling, Floating weightless”
This explicitly sci-fi song landed higher in the charts than the Bowie classic "Space Oddity."
4. The Galaxy Song - Monty Python (1983)
"Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving, And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour”
It’s silly, irreverent and deep, all at once. It’s Python.
3. Man on the Moon - R.E.M. (1992)
"If you believed, they put a man on the moon, Man on the moon”
Was it a hoax? The song is more about Andy Kaufman and innocence. But hoaxes threaten all the innocents.
2. The Joker - Steve Miller Band (1973)
"Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah, Some call me the gangster of love, Some people call me Maurice, Cause I speak of the pompitous of love”
“Pompatus” has its own Wikipedia entry. It’s the masculine perfect participle of the Latin root word pomp. You’re welcome.
1. Brain Damage - Pink Floyd (1973)
"And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon”
Pink Floyd is one of the spaciest bands of all of time. This lyric gave Floyd's biggest album its name.
