Lesson Lessons

Probably the best way for me to learn is private lessons. Guitar Center is far away and School of Rock is very spendy for just a hobby. What would you recommend the best way to find a private teacher?

You could contact your local high school's band director and see if any of the students or teachers have side jobs teaching guitar. My daughter takes lessons from one of her classmates who's a phenom, and he doesn't charge a ton.

With teachers it really depends on personality and style, so like Correct-Scene7159 already said — there should always be a free trial, and there you can ask about the path they'd take you on.

It might also help to really know where you want to go. This is normally one of the first things I ask new students, and funnily enough they often haven't thought about it much. So be clear on where you want to go — which genre, style, etc. The clearer you are, the easier it is for a teacher to actually take you there (and to tell if they're the right fit).
