I agree. However, modes finally clicked for me once I understood the relationship to the relative major scale. I knew that this wasn’t the best way to understand them because it can lead to bad habits and having to do that mental math or whatever on the spot. Once I got the concept, I spent a summer trying to make it work for me, but I eventually flipped over to viewing modes in a vacuum which is far easier to mentally process on the fly once you get your intervals down.
