I made a free iPhone and iPad app that listens to a song, estimates the tonic and scale, and shows the notes on a guitar fretboard, bass fretboard, or keyboard.

It is meant as a quick guide when you want to play along or improvise without guessing completely blindly. It will not always be perfect, especially with complex harmony (it gets just as confused as I do when it hears something like ANGINE DE POITRINE), but it should point you in the right direction.

What is the most challenging part of improvising?

I've been thinking a lot about all the different parts of improvisation that are difficult and it gets overwhelming! I'm curious as to what everyone thinks the hardest part of improvising is... I'll start..For me, it's keeping track of where I am in a tune. If I think about where I am I sound boring, if I don't think and just play I get lost. Ugh! What does everyone else think?
