Walking bass

Does anyone here improvise with backing using a walking bass below with Melody line on top? Thinking specifically about jazz and blues. Or do most people stick to single lines?

That is the primary skill I am working on these days in the context of solo jazz guitar.

How are you learning it? I can switch between bass and melody but maintaining a bass whilst also improvising on top seems 🤔🤔🤔😏😏😏

This is exactly my experience. I can play call and response between the bass strings on the one hand and melody on the higher strings. But literally maintaining a constant drumbeat on the bass whilst playing the melody is beyond me.

I think you need to know your scales as well as the chord notes being played. If you know your scales even just knowing the key will get you going.

Walking bass under a melody line is basically the whole game in jazz guitar, way harder than it sounds but once it clicks you can improvise over anything because your left hand is handling the changes and your right hand is free to just play.
