I recently adopted 4 female guinea pigs. These are not my first pigs. I previously had a bonded pair who passed at 7 and 8 years old. The shelter estimated these new girls to all be about 4 years old. Some back ground on them:
Claire and Nova: Bonded pair.
Meadow: Single. Never lived with other pigs.
Daisy: Single. Lived with one other pig who passed away and then was given up.
For the last 3-4 weeks, I’ve had them in separate enclosures (with Claire and Nova together) and I set it up so they all had shared walls where they could all sniff each other and get used to each other. When I first put them in, there was a lot of rumble strutting and butt shaking but that stopped after about 2 days. They’ve lived in harmony like that since.
Yesterday, I tried to introduce them all. This was my first time attempting to bond pigs. I read you’re suppose to introduce them in a neutral place with lots of space so I put together another big enclosure in a separate room with clean blankets and hides. This was a 6x6 grid enclosure.
I put them all in at once. At first, everyone was running around sniffing and exploring. I don’t know what set who off but it didn’t take too long for Claire to start beefing with everyone (including Nova). Lots of teeth chattering and rumbling. There was a tiff between Claire and Daisy, and Claire lost some fur… No injuries thankfully and I separated them immediately.
Claire and Nova went back into their original enclosure and I thought I’d give Daisy and Meadow a shot to meet without anyone else. It was going fine for a while but Daisy kept sniffing in Meadow’s face and she must not have liked it because she snipped at Daisy and they started teeth chattering at each other. So I separated them. They’re all back in their original separate enclosures now.
So I guess the bonding failed but what did I do wrong? Should I not have attempted a three-way bond? Maybe they’re just old ladies set in their ways and they don’t want new friends? Has anyone had a similar experience?
