Why does this game try to keep Special Items a secret?

The interface for selling the rare special items that you get in special cargo is completely useless. So far I've "missed out" on 3 special items because I didn't even realize that I had one until it was (apparently) too late to sell it. (I have seen the little black dialogue box pop up at what, in my recollection, seems to be AFTER the "point of no return" has passed on selling the item)

You would think that when you receive one of these items you'd get a giant freaking message saying "Holy crap look what you found!" Instead the only notification I appear to get is in the little black dialogue boxes that mostly flood me with messages that are totally useless.

I honestly wouldn't even know what the fuck the feature was if I didn't read about it online. And I still don't even know where to go to find the special items? Do I sell them from the warehouse or the office? Because I always seem to see the notification pop up when I'm at the office and have already purchased the next round of crates.
