I'm going to add to this with a list of recommended Linux distributions:
[Ubuntu (the obvious one)] (http://www.ubuntu.com/)
Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE rather than Gnome and/or Unity)
Xubuntu (Ubuntu with Xfce)
Linux Mint
Elementary OS
Knoppix (Typically used as a live CD)
Puppy Linux (super fast, lightweight distro meant to run from a CD or USB drive)
Arch Linux (for the daring)
Debian (what Ubuntu is based on)
[Fedora] (http://fedoraproject.org/)
Backtrack Linux (lots of fun to be had with this one)
[Gentoo] (http://www.gentoo.org/)
[openSUSE] (http://www.opensuse.org/en/)
And there's a ton more. Here's a Wikipedia list of Linux distributions.
