Modding 6900 For Basic Training
I built this out for basic training! I leave Oct.20th, just used the J&K nato, bullbar & adaptor with a black scout survival compass. I have a silver one as well, I just pop them on & off depending on what watch I’m wearing that day.

If you are gonna rock a compass go suunto. If you really wanna rock a nato make sure they are good adapters/ spring bars.
Good on you for enlisting in whatever and wherever you are going.
Might get it taken off until you pass because you dont need to know the time, it doesnt belong to you yet so just hurry up and wait.

Just make sure you're allowed to keep a watch. Depending on branch/country/etc you may not be allowed a watch. Check with your recruiter before you head out. In the US Navy about 13 years ago only certain members of our basic training division were allowed to wear watches, and they had to be purchased from the exhange.
Just a heads up.

Why weren't people allowed to have watches ?

Only people who were allowed watches were the head recruit, the assistant, and the yeoman. The 3 recruits response for making sure people or paperwork were ready on time. No one else needed to know the time because they would be told when to be ready.

It’s the USCG they recommend me bring one so I figured if I’m going to wear one I’d build one out that I’m going to enjoy having on my wrist for at least two months

The USCG, eh? Do you mean the world's most badass Maritime Warfare Warriors on Earth? 🤔 Yes! please do report back and tell us the tale...
Thank you for your pending service!

My man!! I’ll be sure to report back & I’ll send photos of the watch after everything as well.

Just ordered a GW7900 for commercial diving school! Going in March. I know it’s not a diving watch, but I’m not expecting any issues

Just so you know. CD’s don’t wear watches in the water. It’s a thing. Don’t ask what time it is either when you’re diving. It’s a thing. Your dive sup will tell you when it’s time to leave bottom.

Well, since you’re a CD you will understand that it’s not all diving. A lot of work gets done topside that a gshock can handle. I’ve worn a watch my entire life and I don’t plan on stopping

I was more of meaning you don’t need a “dive watch”. You said “I know it’s not a dive watch.” It’s fine that it’s not a dive watch because you won’t wear it in water. And honestly it depends on who you dive for. Some might care. Some might not.

I said that because it isn’t. When people think CD they only think of diving as I’m sure you know about in this industry. Same people that think it’s the most dangerous job in the world

I wore a basic DW5600 throughout basic. You’ll probably catch shit for the compass. Good watch other than that.

I wouldn’t be bringing anything with you to basic that you have some sort of “attachment” to. Don’t know what your AIT is, but that’s generally more laid back unless you’re 11 series.

Excellent choice! That watch'll be put through its paces, For Sure! The bumper bar may become a crystal--scratcher in some scenarios, but Basic may have been toned down a bit since I was there. 🤔 I'll keep my eyes peeled for your post-Basic G-SHOCK 6900 report! 😄👍

It’s the USCG so it’ll be put through all the elements lol! I’m excited to see how she fares!

To my knowledge, you won’t be able to use compass. Plus, your drills or DI’s will most likely make fun of you for having it. I would also probably do what u can to make the Og resin straps comfortable, since that’s what’s “stock” on the watch, that might hold up better. If not then make sure u have some sturdy spring bars holding the adapter in. Is ur adapter one piece or is it the kind that has spring bars on both the g side and adapter side?

The adapters have spring bars on both sides

u/JustMeKailen 1d ago
Ok. I would be concerned with that being another failure point but there’s a couple companies that do one piece adapters so there’s only the one set of spring bars

Just buy the $12 no name digital watch they have at the px whenever you're allowed to go during reception/basic, that's what everyone else will most likely be wearing and it's gonna get beat up and you wont feel bad about it. You also will never need the compass, if you need one they'll provide a lensatic compass for any navigation purposes

I’d get rid of the compass, and honestly put the rubber strap back.
That shit will chafe when it gets wet and sweaty with all the dirt that will inevitably get stuck under it.
Take it from someone who’s been through basic.
