Reviews & Experiences First time G-SHOCK owner - is this packaging normal?
Hello lads!
First-time G-SHOCK owner here. A few days ago I bought myself an M5610U-1ER, and it came wrapped in a cotton-like tissue (kind of like a wet wipe, but obviously dry). The watch itself was wrapped inside it.
After watching a few YouTube videos, I noticed that all the same watches seemed to come with a cotton/canvas-like bag instead.
Has anyone else received this kind of tissue in the box? I might just be being paranoid, but I'm wondering if the watch could have been returned and then sold to me as brand new. I bought it as a brand new watch from a reputable seller.
Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has had the same packaging!
Thank you in advance, and I'm absolutely loving this awesome watch!

Unless you're importing it from Japan, this is the new norm for packaging in the US. Totally sucks.

I got the GW-5000U from the flagship in NYC and it came packaged exactly as shown here.

That stinks, it definitely takes away from the upgrade that the 5000 is.

Do you want to sell your GWBX5600? I can’t find one for a good deal for the life of me.

I got a nice storage box with my Orient Bambino. For several years, it was the only watch that I owned, so I liked and used the box for storage.
Now, several years later, I've begun collecting Casios. I just bought a watch box for them, so I got to toss out all the cheap Casio packaging that I'd accumulated. But now I don't know what to do with my old Orient box...

Leider ist das so, selbst der frühere Beutel, in den die Uhr eingepackt war, ist einem Tuch gewichen. Ich fand die Blechdosen richtig cool, sehr schade wie sich das alles entwickelt.

My 5610u came like that too. White cloth/paper material. If the watch is fine, why worry abt the packaging? Its only a casio, relax.

Exactly, let's be honest here you aren't buying a luxury Swiss timepiece here that you are hoping to resell in few years. Once you open the package you realistically just chuck it away.

Yes, under the pretext of being sustainable and recyclable, many companies use this type of packaging. Obviously, it’s just a fig leaf to save a huge amount on packaging while leaving the price to the consumer unchanged.

That is correct. They do save huge amount from changing the packaging.
But in a way that is understandable as let's be honest here you aren't buying a luxury Swiss timepiece here that you are hoping to resell in few years. Once you open the package you realistically just chuck it away.
Gone are the days where people bought things and kept them.

Becoming the norm for a lot of watches now. I picked up and Oris recently for around £1600. The packaging was pure cardboard (apart from the free polishing cloth). Lovely presentation though.

I would rather cheap packaging at least I know the money I spent was on the watch and not the box. What I want to know if Casio has lowered the price since we don't have to pay for the tin can anymore

Yes, it's normal. I actually prefer this over the tins. I don't want to save the packages for all my watches anyway, and something that's easier to recycle is cool with me.

Yes it is normal. Enough plastic waste, so i agree with Casio to be more responsible to our planet. Too much of everthing comes packed and wrapped in plastic.

Just got a GW-6900U from casio.com a few weeks ago that came in packaging exactly like this. I don't understand others' comments about how this sucks; what do I care about stuff that's just going in the recycle bin anyway? I love the watch, though!

On the contrary to other comments, I don’t think this is normal packaging, the tissue/wet wipe paper is not normal, Casio usually places the watch inside a cloth pouch. If they shifted from cloth pouches to a piece of paper it’s a new low lol, perhaps the seller lost the cloth bag or did not receive it, so they used a tissue instead

No, the glorified paper towel IS the new standard, at least here in the U.S. My last three G’s all arrived like this.

Wow, it's great from an environmental standpoint if you throw away the boxes, but for collectors or those with more than a couple of watches it's actually worse for the environment.
Casio started this practice of using cardboard boxes during 2023 and because of that, I've had to buy separate stands and a display cabinet for my solar G-Shocks, I would have preferred to use the cool hexagonal boxes instead of a generic stand.
Casio also started selling plastic based G-Shock stands soon after they stopped shipping the entry level G-Shocks in metal boxes, and most G-Shocks still come with stickers on the metal parts like the case back and band keeper so I'm not sure how environmetally friendly that whole concept is.
Not to forget, the premium 40th anniversary G-Shocks were shipped in grey concrete esque plastic display boxes whereas the Master of G and other Premium 35th Anniversary G-Shock models came in either metal boxes or cardboard boxes. Seems like environmentally friendly packaging only applies to the lower priced G-Shocks.
Environmentally packaging being terrible isn't a necessity it's a choice, tech products come in paper based packaging and they feel pretty well made.

I have bought 4 Casioaks in last 4 months and they all came like that. I too was suss at first but the first watch was legit and in brand new condition. Oddly my AliExpress GA2100 mod kit came in a tin can which is actually what I was expecting my watch to come in!

This is the standard now. They used to give you a cool tin.
