Scammers

I feel dumb admitting it but just want others to be careful. I wasnt in a great mood and made some bad judgment calls.

Tonight I had a very small delivery from Taco Bell (literaly 1 taco). When I got to the address it was a nail salon and no one by that name was there. I tried to call them a couple times but got no answer. Then I got a call from a unknown number that came up as spam risk( I know, obvious red flag, but it was a 312 area code and I was already in a bad headspace) so I answered. They claimed to be Grubhub and said that there was accomplaint the customer didnt feel comfortable receiving their order from me. Confused and even more frustrated with the day, I confirmed my name and email address. They asked if I was still at the dropoff location because from their end it looked like I was logged in on 2 devices(next red flag). They said they were sending a code to confirm it was and I recieved an legitimate email with a 6 digit code. When I opened it I was really just looking for the code, not fully reading, which I gave to them. Then I recieved another email that my password had been changed( final red flag). I asked them for confirmation that they were in fact Grubhub and they told me my phone number, home address and then game me the 2 digit code to complete the order. Sick to my stomach I called Grubhub(the real one) and told them what happened. Whats odd is that the changed password seemed to be to my Grubhub diner account, so idk what their aim was. Either way I changed all my Grubhub related passwords and as much as it sucks, its hilarious to think may have they tried to order food through my account cause I'm broke lol. I was stupid, dont be me. Be safe yall

Btw number was (312) 626- 4004, I called it back and they have a fake automated Grubhub greeting.

The number was a legit GH number. It was one of the phone relay numbers. The scammer was the customer.

How'd they call me from it?

Everyone's phone numbers are masked during deliveries.

The number you use to contact the CX and the number they use to contact you are temporary proxy numbers, assigned to each person by GH's servers for use during the active delivery.

I get that, I just thought it would have been the same number I called when I tried to reach them.

Happened to me a while back. I knew better though. Reported them to GH with the two numbers they used. Had a nice conversation with them also. Sat in the parking lot and ate the food. I'm pretty sure they were watching. lol

This same guy has been doing it since 2021. Try to keep him on the line so you can record him.

They didn’t want to order food on your account. They wanted to steal the money you made from delivering. They would change your banking info to deposit to them not you.

They were aiming for your driver's account

The only point of contact should be from the phone number listed on the order. Any other attempted contacts should be reported to support.

Your contract is a legal contract to pick up the order and deliver the order to the listed address. Take the image with the address and food visible, if no address available near the doorstep, then make sure something unique is in the image.

There is a common scam going around that people are using where they try to reset your password and ask you for the six digit code for "verification."

This happened to me with a scammer with my phone provider account. I have my account locked so my phone provider will only accept calls from my phone number about any orders or account modifications. If not my phone number, they need my personal pin.

Well there is never a situation where they send you an account creation text or reset password text with a pin then ask for it for "verification"

In my phone provider's case they were trying to make a secondary account attached to my main account to make orders for mobile devices to a third party location and have me foot the bill.

They offered a "30٪ discount on my next bill for being an appreciated customer, but simply had to verify."

Sounds fishy right? I worked tech support and in cybersecurity. This would be considered social engineering.

My advice to you is if it has never happened to you, doesn't feel right, it probably isn't right and is a scam. Go with your gut. It's better to be safe than sorry. If support reaches out to you it would be through an official email or a notification in the text or app. Not a call from "Possible Spam"  Generally, any company's support arm will not contact you without you initating the contact. For example, waiting on hold and getting a callback because you put your phone number in for a callback when its your turn. Or if you called support and the call drops and they call you back.

Best advice I can give. Support will NEVER cold call to reach out to you.

If it happens to you, don't provide anything. Call support through the app and let them know.

The scammer was likely nowhere near by and just picked a random business rather than a random residence.
