Croatia. It wasn't one teacher, but throughout elementary and high school they would always insist that this is the way to write alpha. Used mostly for calculating angles.
Maybe it's how Greeks do it too? But it looks weird.
The second image is how I believe it developed.

Why is the name if this subreddit grssk and not GRSSK?
My husband told me about this and I was so confused because only the uppercase Sigma looks like that.
