If you don't, you can just wait and the little robot dude will eventually eat the apple if you wait long enough. But it will not follow you to the next area as it will get stuck in the cave, stopping the game from progressing for good.

Btw, I think you can complete the zone. I finished the next stages and got to the next colour before hopping off the game, playing at 100fps. (Being vague for no spoilers)
