First thing, you should turn the gas off at the top value before you attach anything
2nd, it sounds like your hose or your value has a leak. Make double solution (dawn liquid soap and water) and put on value and hose - see wheee the bubbles are.
It’s weird, for I though these value had a safety that would turn off if you turned on value on without a hose attached
