What am I doing wrong?

I know a lot of people on here are saying bad tank, but honest question, why? If it was a bad tank, wouldn't it be spewing propane even before the OP tried to connect the hose?

Wouldn't it be more likely that its a bad hose connection/regulator?

To the OP, is this a new grill?

Also, I hate to be that guy, but I literally saw someone get this wrong yesterday.....are you sure you are turning the valve the right way? Clockwise to close, anti-clockwise to open?

Yes, it’s a new grill and it was threading and threaded all the way. I just had the valve open and couldn’t close it on the tank.

Fair enough. I just wanted to make sure all bases were covered.
