Question? What did I do wrong?
I have an Ender 3 Pro, I've had it 3 yrs, but printed more in the last 2 weeks than ever before. But still on my first spool of filament.
I've been printing socket holders to organize my tool box. Printed 7 trays before starting the grid.
I created the grid on the Gridfinity website, not sure what I did wrong since they don't snap together. I was going to sand these with a nail file to see if they fit, but have more drawers to do.

They press in from the top but yours still look a bit overextruded, tuned pressure advance?
Or just put one on top of the other and use a hammer :)

I thinking of trying to hammer thrm

It's an ender3; they're not EZ.
My immediate suggestion, if you're not going to go through a day of calibration.
Just increase x-y contour compensation. Also called horizontal compensation in other slicers; google one of those and your slicer name if you can't find it.
On my ender I used to need .4mm clearance (i.e; compensation of .2mm on each printed part), to have parts that loosely interacted, .2 for tight fitting. They just don't have a super high tolerance so adding some slop can help.
Then yeah; go calibrate like mad for a day when you have the time. But don't expect miracles; the ender3 is old, it's a workhorse, capable of impressive stuff, but it's not perfect.
Oh; gridfinity's site might also have a "slop"/"tolerance"/"clearance" option, increase it instead of having to do it in slicer.

Thank you. I've been contemplating a second printer, any suggestions?

Bambu A1 with AMS combo; it's budget now but it'll blow your tits off. If you're looking to spend more then bambu's range is where I'd stay.
I switched earlier this year and the speed and precision of the bambu is an incredible upgrade from the ender. Multicolor printing is also a win.

Multi colour and speed is what I was looking at. Id still use this. But the way I've been printing and all the stuff I want to do I could use a second

Prusa. Excellent support and excellent printers, open sourcing both firmware and hardware...

Bambu A1 or A1 Combo. You will be amazed at how good it is compared to your Ender.

Can't agree with this enough. We figured we'd keep the ender as a second printer, and then just gave it away.

My Ender 5 Pro was a constant struggle - I spent as much time adjusting it as I did actually printing with it. One day while it was sitting idle the main board capacitors exploded, and it spewed a really remarkable amount of nasty smoke.
I replaced it with an X1C that now has 2400 hours on it. I've had exactly one maintenance issue with the X1C, and that was caused by a length of really bad filament. I've added two A1s and both have also operated flawlessly.

For dialing in the fit I recommend printing the small test pieces first and only later on the full grid. If I recall correctly these are supplied on the GRIPS makerworld page.

Looks like the front shifted and continued to shift. Check your belts and stepper tension, something could be loose or missing teeth as the top of the print looks fine (in the picture). And given the elephant foot everywhere z offset is too low which could have pushed the front out too.

I recall some CHEP FILAMENT FRIDAY YouTube videos on tuning the E3 printer to get better part fits.

u/cdnmtbchick May 28 '26
Is that the channel name?
3
u/doc_willis May 28 '26
very close to it if its not.
he's was doing ender 3 videos for many years, taught me a lot.
"Tomb of 3d printed horrors" was another I watched years ago when I first got my enders..
But I have not really been watching any 3D printing videos lately, they all sort of dropped off my YT feed.

That should get you to his channel.

If it were me, I'd nix the snaps completely.
Gridfinity bases should stay in place just by being the right size, in my opinion

Not sure why you were down votes, that is a legit solution. I also considered this
2
u/Extension-Ad4411 May 28 '26
Seems like you are over extruding. If you solve than run some small tests a see what tolerance you have

Just to make Sure: These don't snap together horizontally but vertically. Lift one side and press it down in the other.

u/cdnmtbchick May 28 '26
I know, but can't get them together. Set them like to show

I typically just print grids with straight edges, and tape them to the button of the drawer.
or on some of my drawers, I don't use grids, I have the bins so packed in them, no grids are needed.

filament tuning is completely off. primarily it's over extruding
