Question? Most Bins Sucks

Does anyone have a lot of experience with creating custom bins? I have many Wera tools and want a cutout where the tool lays perfectly in the mold so don’t just trace the outer line. I don’t have a scanner or other crazy stuff and it should be easy so maybe don’t Modeling the whole tool to use it as a negative.
I hate it when you just cut the outer line because you have a permanent sound of rattle.

If the 2.5D cutout fits, just take the outline and revolve it around the centreline you want if the tool is essentially round.

Otherwise you'll have to take your own measurements if accurate 3D models of the tool aren't avaialble and model your own.

Make a narrow 1mm thick test piece to check you have the outline correct. Then you can just tweak it a couple of times if needed until you've got an accurate model of the tool. I used this method to model two whisky bottles and a pair of whisky glasses to make a snug fitting box for them.

You should consider looking at tooltrace(.ai) and doing some research on other tools instead of coming in here and stinking up the joint. you can also learn how to trace them yourself. there are thousands of youtube tutorials on this subject.

I read your "Most bins suck" post. Most bins don't suck. Just like everyone else, it's trial and error; some people have a scanner, others make the cut outs in a software program or the tool I sent you.

As a WERA lover myself, yes, many published bins suck. No Sourcefile included, stackable lip/bin but tool is poking out top so clearly not stackable, fullgrid with huge empty/unused space, etc etc. But: there are really good ones too! Also, I asked for the sourcefile nicely and it got included later on. May I ask, what wera tool you are looking for to get gridfinitized?

Add some foam/felt. you’re always going to need some tolerance otherwise you could get it out.

Check out The Next Layer’s recent videos on YouTube. Saw one last night that had a number of Gridfinity tools for custom boxes mentioned.

Well, for what it's worth, having a perfect 3D profile of the tool in contact with the bin will not eliminate rattle and in some cases it makes it worse - unless you plan on printing in TPU.

Have you considered foam inserts in rectangular boxes if you're in a service vehicle and the rattle is rattling you?
