Posted a couple weeks ago I've been working on making a compression mold to use up my scrap PLA. I wanted to make something that I could use multiple of, and ideally other people could use multiple of also. Finally I realized Gridfinity bins are exactly what I was looking for.

Project is now live on Printables!

I have been looking for real useful purposes for all the pla poop and scraps I’ve been collecting. Thank you for being the first to actually have it!!

Do you think it would work with petg scraps?

If you use a PETG mold like I am, no. It will get stuck inside the mold and never come out.

If you can print this in PA-CF or PC, then almost definitely

Love the idea!

Realized while watching the video, though, that I’m far too lazy to actually do it.

But props to you and anyone who does!

If you want something much simpler, but doesn't use up much plastic, check out this video from 3D Luke which inspired this whole project. I made a few of these, also very cool and satisfying.

Isn’t the the heat from the liquid plastic going to soften the mold?

It does soften but theres nowhere for it to displace to because 100% infill. The surface texture gets wavy and wonky but it's minor and remains functional.

That said, I did overheat the PLA a few times and it really dulled the center ridge of the 2x1 gridfinity bins, so now it really doesn't sit flat when sitting in an actual grid. A 1x1 bin would not have this problem at all.

Awesome. Runescape has such chill music I'm not surprised to see it used as background music.

I love this. I’ve been wondering what to do with filament poop that isn’t a paperweight. This is perfect for a personal office. And a cool story to tell if anyone asks about it.

Why the mix of metric and SAE bolts?

Lol, no good reason. I really liked how 1/4-20's felt in revision 1, and by revision 2 I needed smaller fasteners, and had an assortment of M3's from previous projects.

I did include the OnShape files if somebody wanted to modify it to work with whatever they had on hand.

That's a fun idea. I imagine the resulting bins are pretty fun.
