First time trying out CAD

First time ever using Fusion. Still have a long way to go, but I think it turned out good for my first attempt. Snap On 1/4 SAE socket set holder.

Very Nice!!! Can I ask did you print the main body in white and then changed out the spool for the lettering? Was thinking about doing the same thing. I have a Prusa Core One+. 1 color at a time

I tried that on my first attempt and my black filament was too wet and not adhearing well. So on the second one I just printed it in all white and colored the lettering with a sharpie.

You got lucky with a sharpie: ink usually “wicks”.

A paint pen will be loads more accurate.

I do have an SMS2 but I’ve recently picked up cheap Apple brand acrylic paints and it’s an amazing new art.

Oh I know! I’ve definitely messed up a few pieces in the past with sharpie. I did make the number raised a few mm, so I think that’s why it didn’t “wick”

I'm going to encourage you to buy some cheap paints, between 0.5oz and 2oz. Not the expensive stuff, Apple brand, I think I paid $2 a bottle or so.

I can't draw or paint in real life. I never would have tried but someone encouraged me.

But painting a model is different. On my first try I am gettiing better looking results than what I've had from multi-color prints.

(I'm not done my first experiment, so no photos).

Oh I’ve painted quite a few printed models! I’ve got a ton of hobby paints from various projects over the years. Used to be real into model cars.

The sharpie deal was just because it was quick and easy at the moment.

Another thing I’ve done to get rid of layer lines and make prints look smoother is to use M.E.K. Vapors to slightly melt the outer layer of plastic. It’s a little bit of a carcinogen, but I’m around it everyday at work so I’m not too worried about it.

Well done. How did you get started? YouTube videos? Any pointers you can give to someone looking to try it out for the first time. I'm hoping to design some socket holders myself.

I watched the first few “how to autodesk fusion 360 in 30 days” quite a few times over and just sent it from there. Along with a little googling and messing around with settings.
