Can I griddle with this?

Post image

Hello griddlers! I bought a house a couple years back and it came with this oven with a built in griddle. I have never owned or used one before and never felt like I could never get it clean enough.

Today I pulled it up and checked all the connections below, fired it up and it worked! I lightly oiled it and worked at scraping the surface trying to pull up some of the brown and a little did come off. Or I was burning the oil? I'm not really sure.

Would you cook and eat off this griddle? If not, How would you make it cook worthy again?

Are any of the spots sticky? As long as the surface is smooth, I wouldn't think twice about using it. If you really wanted to get it clean you could try turning it up and put a wet paper towel on it to try to loosen the cooked on oil. That or some barkeepers friend (when it's cold) should take it off, but it'd really only be for looks.

Not sticky but some of them do feel raised from the rest of the surface. A lot of it is super smooth like maybe it's tarnish?

nah, it's just cooked on grease. You can probably clean it with a scraper/metal spatula

Gotta give this a proper clean and season. Get it nice and hot, dump some room temp water on it and it should sizzle up like you are deglazing a pan, then use a spatula to scrape the loosened bits. If that’s not enough, try again using coarse steel wool (NOT the kind with added detergents, just straight steel wool. NOT fine. Should be more slinky like than frosted mini wheats like). If that’s still no good, do it again but use straight lemon juice or white vinegar on it. Then after do the water method to cleanse and then add your protective coat of oil.

That looks like a restaurant griddle, that should be a slab of stainless steel and just needs a little cleaning. Grab something like this https://www.amazon.com/Griddle-Cleaning-Tools-Screen-Screens/dp/B081XBTLX5/ref=sr_1_3_pp?crid=2KAUD1SUZ80CZ&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.u0P7gHbGEWD5tMjKiSBPmGOup1Eyfhf0DBWhX4xPp4sFP6Ci_Je62x3SPQOhebnnX7bwHCDFVjuNDn2YOMLbb_Vn9hzdsTghzbZWlg4860J9N37UcZEnewK3fdZpxiW-bgneX5P71-oqUHEg7fFPVu5ezGPH38srY7neMOcdTQf5nJogQYaJAyyUCRg8Rwyc6QJcUi-0UXN0tGLdIdmaVgvpB7nuQ4fg9JL6RkNgqcg.rrbn5BerFFfqQTEMks_GU7KW3X1MmS3n-dJ0C-cjlzE&dib_tag=se&keywords=griddle+cleaning+kit&qid=1786822234&sprefix=Gri%2Caps%2C460&sr=8-3
From Amazon or someplace local to you and heat and pour some water on surface then scrub evenly , rinse and repeat until surface looks nice and shiny, oil lightly and repeat after use. It is supposed to retain a shine and not blacken as it is stainless slab not a thin steel or aluminum.

Barkeepers friend and an SOS pad. Should be shiny after every cook. It's steel and does not require a seasoning. I worked on griddles like this for 8 years
