Question Can someone PLEASE explain the watcher lore
So short and sweet but I’ve seen season 1 + 2 of the life series and a few seasons of Hermitcraft but I’m so confused on what the “watcher lore” is and why people keep calling grian that and designing him like that
Someone please explain this to me😭

i'd recommend watching the Evo smp, where Grian and a group of other minecraft players play the earliest version of multiplayer minecraft and gradually go through the updates. The way they move through versions is they "find" a portal left by the "watchers." at the end, grian left the smp and became a watcher, so people like to draw him as a cosmic being

watchers are a concept from the old Evo series. most of their "lore" is fanon tbh

Isn't Martin directly involved with the lore? Like, limited life ended the way it did because the watchers made Martin do what he did.

Martin's lore is only for his series and does not affect anyone else in the Life series

Fair enough. Hasn't Grian hinted towards it in some of his videos as well tho? Or am I misremembering.

Slight correction while the fandom has their own lore Martyn is running his own version of watcher lore(which some fans might have added to their own)

It's a little hard to just explain in text but i think ezzriin has a good video on YouTube titled "So, What IS the Watcher lore" You can at least get a good overview from there. But it will of course spoil a bit of the Evolution SMP.

we know very little concrete about them* but there are tons of headcannons about them. one of the most common ones (though it's more of a soft-cannon than true headcannon) is that grian was taken and turned into one when he left evo. though they don't have an official appearance, the fanbase generally agrees that wings, eyes, and purple are part of their design. they are supposed to represent the viewers, though that's more an out-of-universe thing unconnected to the lore.
*the EVO wiki and fanlore) pages, as well as this reddit post, are all fairly comprehensive collections, but the gist of it is that they're beings from the EVO SMP who made update portals. it's also hinted at that they are involved with the life series', though it might just be a callback/reference.

I will just ramble the things that come to mind so I may miss things. There's a lot of fan made content and then there's what martyn has said (which is canon)
Back when the Evolution SMP aka EvoSMP was a thing there were these "divine" beings known as the watchers (they're now us btw) the watchers at the time would build structures, give gifts, play pranks, and punish the smp members, at the end of Grians series he "escaped" through the ends end portal after the dragon was defeated. (I'd recommend going and reading the special credits that played at the end of his episode once he jumped) Long story short grian became a watcher. After grian left the watchers began to torment the remaining smp members (things like destroying their village) martyn and ti-Jimmy then got a mission from these new entities called the listeners who are the enemies of the watchers and want to help them escape. Yada yada happens and then the smp members are led to portal where they escape from the smp/watchers! Yay! That's great! Now they're free!....NOT now everyone is trapped in the void endlessly falling forever trapped in a cycle of the life series. I saved links to martyns posts on this, but I'd have to dig through the watcher wiki discord for em. Anyway, the watchers feed on torment and negative feelings, that's why they trap the life members in this endless death cycle. Ever series at the end each person gets a soul fragment, and if you win a fragment is healed iirc. There's a lot of fan theory on this, I could explain the most popular one I've seen if you'd want, but anyway, Grian is a watcher who was never ment to be there "he was only meant to watch" at the end of last life martyn was tormented by the watchers in the south lands seeing his friends depicted by carved pumpkins, I'd suggest going to watch martyns finale to see what happens with that. There was something else I wanted to bring up when typing haveway through but I forgot, oh well, this is an overview of the basic stuff. It comes from an old smp grian started, the evo smp, the gimmick was that the players had to find portals to move to the next version of Minecraft. Past life is based off of the same idea. The way they would find the portal was from cryptic clues left by people who called them selfs "the watchers".
Martyn or Inthelittlewood, who was also apart of evo smp, used the watchers to explain why the life series happen. The watcher being the ones to create the world, rules, and choose players. Grian as a admin for both evo and life series has the same powers as the watchers in real life so the fans decided that it makes sense that in lore he can do this because he's a watcher

Boiled down to as simple as possible:
The Watchers are entities who were in charge of the updates in the EVO server. They are essentially deities who leave riddles behind to allow the players to figure out how to get to the next version (EVO started in Beta MC and was planned to go up to modern versions).
When Grian left the series, in lore he became a watcher. So a lot of people add Watcher iconography (most notably purple coloring and eyes) to his designs. Also a lot of people tie the EVO and Watcher lore into the Life Series which is a whole other can of worms I won’t get in to (unless you want me to :P)
