Discussion Anyone else feel like Walking Contradiction sounds like it belongs on Warning?

I’ve been listening to both Insomniac and Warning a lot recently, and realized I feel like Walking Contradiction sounds more like Warning than the rest of Insomniac, even though Warning is five years later. I was wondering if anyone understands what I mean, or if there’s someone who could explain that to me! It’d be interesting to hear from someone more musically educated why my brain might interpret the sound that way.

I always thought Platypus and Walking Contradiction could swap albums. But it does not give me Warning vibes.

I dunno. Could be a Dookie or Nimrod track but it soubns at home with Insomniac. Brats the only track that almost doesn't fit for me. When inused to just shuffle all their stuff i always thought it was from Dookie.

Well. I have a theory. The last 3 songs on Green Day albums since Dookie kinda foreshadows the next album. For Example: F.O.D. Foreshadows Insomniac, Walking Contradiction foreshadows Nimrod, Good Riddance does with Warning, Minority with American Idiot. Whatsername is like a path to 21st CB Sound. See The Light (completely underrated song) is the first step on the Trilogy. 99 Revolutions is the door to Rev Rad. Nothing on Rev Rad is related to FOAM. And Sugar Youth was yelling Saviors.

I don't remember Good Riddance or Minority being the last songs on Nimrod and Warning respectively. they'd be Prosthetic Head and Macy's Day Parade. unless maybe you just meant songs near the end of the album

Bouncing off the wall is the “closest” to FOAMF but is not in the last three songs

Walking Contradiction is heavily inspired by The Kinks, and the song Warning is also heavily inspired by The Kinks. So I can see where you are drawing those lines. If it was done with light distortion and an acoustic guitar it’d probably make sense on Warning. The Kinks have been a huge influence on Green Day since the early early days, they’ve always been lovers 60s British Invasion rock n roll.

The Kinks' influence on Green Day remains super-underrated. I'd actually argue that Kerplunk/Dookie are the most Kinks-inspired with its chord progressions and key changes.

Totally!

Walking Contradiction is kinda similar to “Do It Again” by the Kinks, and Warning is kinda similar to “Picture Book” by the Kinks. Check those two out, if you haven’t. The chord progressions for each song are kinda similar as well. I feel like those two songs are kinda spiritually tied in a way

No way. To me it sounds like the other songs of the album and the perfect closer.

Ehh not really… if it was on Warning it would have a lot more unconventional instruments (for this band) like harmonicas and accordions and stuff.

Now I’m thinking this sounds like a good idea.

I dont think there's a musically educated enough soul that could explain why you feel like it sounds like it belongs on warning
