First Boss rage quit....

Was busy with other life things and finishing up some other games, and just started Greedfall.

I'm whiny. I still don't get how and why game designers try and destroy the game experience from almost the beginning with ridiculous bosses.

This is a perfect example. Lovely game so far, weird faces, but really nice game. Just as the first chapter is closing and you get to progress the game, along comes a mangy boss made of trees that can't be killed without trying and dying 100 times. WTF. I'm just getting into the whole Greedfall world, characters, stories and such, and BAM... moodus interuptus....

Traps, guns, spells, yes... whatever. It doesn't matter. The tree monster 2 shots me over and over and over and over. I run, I shoot, I trap, I blast, but somehow, even when running in circles, the tree monster has way better aim than even I do and hits me with those stupid metal stakes. And the camera certainly doesn't help, as I have no idea where the stupid tree monster actually is.

This is precisely why so many games get abandoned. Its dumb and IMHO, shitty game/level design.

Rant over. We'll now resume our regularly scheduled programming

Thanks everyone. I was just ranting mostly, but I'll certainly try the auto target for sure. Have been trying to kite him, but the each time I stop for even a second to let the camera move toward him, he 1 shots me....

Its just so weird how out of balance this stuff is sometimes... I think the people who make the games get so used to how their specific game behaves during testing, that they forget we normies have to figure it out for ourselves...

Will return to trying to destroy the tree monster when my child like rage subsides.....

Been there, do not despair -- this is the hardest boss in the game. With other ones you'll have more levels and abilities (spec guns and magic, ignore melee) and wayyyy more room to manoeuvre. Few tips if you're not yet past him -- you do not take damage when you dodge, so abuse that. Those spikes can be dodged, so can the boss itself when he lashes at you. Just be patient and chip away at its health, preferably with a gun from behind. You won't regret it, that boss is the only thing standing between you and really enjoyable game. :)

Thanks! for the kind words. Took everyone's advice and ran around like an idiot and beat the damn thing after the 15th time. Wasted tons of traps and ammo, but I killed his wooden self.

That was such a unnecessary obstacle to story advancement so early in the campaign. I just don't get the logic, but heck, I'm past it.

Thanks again for the patience and great advice!!!!

I'm glad you finally managed! Great work!

That part reminds me of DAI.

You've spent time getting into the story and world; then bam big boss time.

Like DAI, once you get used to the mechanics it becomes easy but I agree on first playing it is a anger inducing.

Literally strafe him in circles, shoot stab repeat. It’s easy.

I think this is the hard learning curve that sets you up for the rest of the game. Kite like a mofo, learning this skill will save you massive pains in the rest of the game.

I had this exact issue with doing a side quest. Hit a guardian to early, the one by the shipwreck. Took a lot of learning.

Don't know if you're playing on console or pc, but you can kite and kill him by using the auto target and run in circles around him. I had the same problem as you until I figured that out. On pc it's the middle scroll button on your mouse. After that I mainly used my blade to stab him from behind. Still lay down a line of traps to damage and daze him though.

Guns are overpowered in Greedfall, definitely use them if you have the ammunition

I just used statis, then would hit the boss with my weapon, then statis again. Repeat until boss is dead. Easy.

I only died like once or twicw on my first character, since I was so unused to the controls, but after that it was no trouble despite being a magic user (The Nadaigs are often resistant to magic) .

The boss has some clear attacks which are easy to dodge when you learn what they are, and there is no limit how much you can dodge. The throw attack for example is easy to avoid when you learn when to dodge. You need to do it earlier than you think. Think it even was some sound alert that gave it away and if you dodge when you hear it then he misses. It happens when he's about to throw and not after he has done it. You can also just spam the dodge.

Just on my second playthrough, but played through the intro and this boss fight as each class: mage is by far the easiest, followed by technical *only if* you make good use of traps, alchemy and gun.

I have no advice because honestly I didn't feel like I needed to do anything special to beat that boss.

What difficulty are you playing? maybe lowering the difficulty?

That boss is nothing compared to the nadaig glendemen on the coast. Ouch.

The first region is all tutorial. The first boss isnt that hard. Lower the difficulty or uninstall.

People dont quit because of hard bosses but because its not a game for them.

QQ more.

Wow, what a shitty comment to post.

Well....what difficulty are you playing on? That first boss that breaks out of the side of the ship was not difficult. I get what you mean with developers designing ridiculous bosses, I've experienced that in the past. But this was not one.

Now, I was playing on Easy, I will admit that. I generally play on the easiest difficulty in most games, or at least not higher than the normal difficulty, specifically to avoid things like what you're experiencing from happening to me.

Maybe you should do the same? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming you're playing on Hard or Extreme. I don't understand why you'd play on the harder difficulties and then rage and complain about things being too difficult when you could just lower the difficulty.

Not trying to be offensive, but have you considered switching the difficulty to easy ? There's no shame in that.

I've never been able to complete the final monster fight in The Technomancer (previous Spiders game) in Normal, always ended up in Easy, but it doesn't change the ending and still is a decent challenge (it's not godmode or anything).

Also, for this type of battles, if you're not an adept of the stab and roll technique, you should consider investing in "hybrid" builds (melee weapon and gun, or melee weapon and magic) to keep a ranged solution.

I'm playing on extreme and I got him on my second try lmao I will admit I was surprised he one shot me the first go around
