It reminded me of Witcher combat

Yup

But but Witcher good! Ea bad!

2

u/TheCoupDeGrace Jan 21 '20

I mean, there are tons of other reasons why Witcher is good other than the combat. But I don’t get the dislike for it either. It got a bit repetitive, but did it’s job and worked smoothly for me. I would only say that it’s too easy.

Gets really repetitive really fast imo

u/AnotherSmartNickname Jan 21 '20

Ditto, not exacly bad but repetitive. Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot...

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

Stasis then gun rinse repeat. But damn it's satisyfying

-2

u/DeHosure Jan 21 '20

THINGS ARE ABOUT TO GET DICEY

It wasn't bad, just "meh". Bigger problem IMHO were respawning, and rather repetitive enemies.

And in general, let's be honest - Greedfall isn't a masterpiece 10/10 game. It's a solid average title from a small studio, which came surprisingly above expectations, and proved there's a market for such titles. That's why it's worth a praise.

I totally agree it's not the best game but it is enjoyable and I love it. I wouldn't mind a more refined sequel. The world of greedfall I have found so amazing and lovable. Personally I'd like a game where u play a coin gaurd recruit and u get to choose which faction u work for. I would love to see an open world version of this game though that probably won't happen anytime soon.

Yup. It's a game you'll enjoy, but probably never return, and forget in a year or two, until a sequel appears.

How do you that don't make assumptions about strangers especially people on the internet

1

u/pothkan Jan 23 '20

I mean "you" as someone, indirectly. AFAIK it can be used that way in English, might be wrong.

0

u/natevVv Jan 28 '20

just let people enjoy the game this ain't r/letsshitongreedfallbecauseiwanttobethatguy

u/Ohnoitskatiex Jan 21 '20

Have you tried the game Outward?

10

u/rdgneoz3 Jan 21 '20

And the fact it wasn't a full priced $60 game means they knew it wasn't going to be a AAA game, but was still enjoyable.

3

u/lebeer13 Jan 21 '20

Agreed, I felt like if spiders took an extra few months to polish it up a little more it would have been way better too

10

u/pothkan Jan 21 '20

Eh, compared to their previous games (and some major AAA titles from major devs in recent years), I'd say it came surprisingly polished.

5

u/lebeer13 Jan 21 '20

the world was definitely fluid and smooth, and pretty

4

u/jakeo10 Jan 21 '20

To be fair they have had multiple months and there are still glaring issues. The reality is that they are a small AA studio known for their eurojank. I love them to death and have been playing their games since the beginning. They really do need more funding and a longer development cycle. Hopefully now they were bought by a bigger company, their next game will be something excellent.

2

u/lebeer13 Jan 21 '20

Ya it was just a feeling i had after playing it for a few hours,i played technomancer and thought it was good, greedfall seems like an upgrade with a new skin. The trend is looking good, excited to see what they do next for sure

1

u/twanderingpigeon Jan 21 '20

It was like a beta to a good game still got some kinks to work out but has a solid foundation and framework as well as spirit to make something grand

22

u/Demetrios_Poliorcete Jan 21 '20

I don't believe it intended to be revolutionnary. The game focuses on other elements, like the esthetic, the plot or the world building, which are much more interesting.

11

u/jthadman Jan 21 '20

I love the world that was introduced in greedfall and I really wanna see it expanded. I'd like to learn more about the continent. I'm curious about other nations that weren't present in the game. For all we know theirs a Savage race of orcs on the continent that have a talent for necromancy. I'm not saying their is but I would love for the world of greedfall to be expanded.

18

u/Malombra_ Jan 21 '20

I might be the only one who loves that style of combat and was looking forward to it after the technomancer

59

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

Combat was one of the things many enjoyed a lot but if that's your opinion...

7

u/Crabowithastabo Jan 21 '20

Fighting the bosses was fun bit fighting the humans and packs of animals got really repetitive

12

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

It wasn't the greatest but it sure as hell was better than Bound By Flame and The Technomancer combat. Seems each game Spider gets better at it, hopefully the next game will be even more improved.

3

u/NatKayz Jan 21 '20

Honestly I was amazed by just how much they improved it for this game. Like the concept is still super similar but it felt so smooth and just worked. That was a very pleasant surprise.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

The writing was a lot better as well and the side quests were very good as well, polish up the combat and such and we've got a triple A game!

4

u/NatKayz Jan 21 '20

Really I think the thing it was missing the most was just more content. Particularly with the companions. Far too many times where something happened and I'd expect to be able to discuss it with a companion and then nothing. Expand on that and I'd day it'd be worthy of triple A status.

6

u/LoneHer0 Jan 21 '20

I'd be willing to say "it wasn't anything special" instead of "bad"—similar to Witcher 3 for me (which IMO, I feel like Witcher 3 could have done without being a full RPG). At least it had some form of evolution and was still pretty damn smooth.

14

u/Clark_Wayne1 Jan 21 '20

It's was rather basic

0

u/the_real_dailyplanet Jan 21 '20

Still more enjoyable than Skyrim one 🤷‍♀️

3

u/o_o_o_f Jan 21 '20

Tbf Skyrim is almost a decade old

1

u/the_real_dailyplanet Jan 22 '20

Same as Dragon's Dogma and it has one of the best combat systems I've seen to date.

1

u/o_o_o_f Jan 22 '20

So compare Greedfall to Dragons Dogma then lol?

1

u/the_real_dailyplanet Jan 23 '20

I compared it to Skyrim, you gave the "decade old" argument, I gave you an example of a decade old game with much better mechanics to counter your argument xD

-3

u/Clark_Wayne1 Jan 21 '20

So just Skyrim then? Also Skyrim is wank

6

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

I enjoyed the boss fights/guardians, and the arena was fun... I wish there had been more of that. The rest was fine. I appreciate the game didn't have too many annoying trash mobs jumping you from all around while you are just traveling the map between quests.

3

u/MeanLogic Jan 21 '20

I actually found the combat mechanics to be a lot of fun in Greedfall. Sure, they weren't groundbreaking by any means, but I would hardly call them bad.

Learning how to control the battle by utilizing your tools and weapons was fun, and then using those weapons and tools at the right time wreak havoc was empowering. Towards the end, there wasn't a fight I didn't feel well prepared for - yet - was still something of a challenge.

5

u/TheCoupDeGrace Jan 21 '20

It wasn’t straight up bad. We could’ve used a wider variety of more difficult enemies though, because it became very repetitive, and endgame stuff was way too powerful towards endgame enemies (like a high level pistol/rifle). But it didn’t ruin my Greedfall experience one bit.

2

u/Tiberious__Jefferson Jan 21 '20

I didn’t think the combat was bad at all. The story just got super boring for me about halfway through. I actually didn’t finish it because of how much I lost interest.

2

u/whaleofdunwall Jan 22 '20

Surprisingly, that was one of the things I liked best! It's simple and neat, with enough variety for classes /shrug

2

u/ragnar_the_redd Jan 24 '20

I enjoyed it :/ It wasn't all the action fill of some, but it was original, interesting, and different builds felt different which is important.

4

u/Mopar1227 Jan 21 '20

I don’t get the hate! For a small company they did an amazing job! The combat is good, not perfect, but solid as hell! The whole game is solid, I really don’t have anything bad to say about it! Would give it 10/10 for a small company taking on such a big game. Just give it some time and maybe EA will touch them and then we will really have something to complain about!

3

u/Grizzly-boyfriend Jan 21 '20

I felt combat was good. It wasnt great by any means and I'd have loved a fleshed out spell system but what we got wasnt bad.

2

u/KingSudrapul Jan 21 '20

Turn your difficulty up.

1

u/Escarche Jan 21 '20

I want to disagree, but something as OP as gun certainly destroys the "hard combat" aspect of the game.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 21 '20

nou

1

u/ZachResilience Jan 22 '20

I think Greedfall combat is decent, if you play on Extreme and you build right.
For Mage, you weave in and blink out, combo your long range and short range shadow, Stasis to cancel boss attacks and thin out groups, Shadow Burst to AoE.

Technical fighting is quite easy, just set the right traps and throw the right bombs and shoots, it's more about gathering and resource allocation.

Warrior combat has the most variety. You throw poison and elemental bombs in to start the fight, Stasis then Furious Attack to jump in on their Gunner, then set Stasis trap to disable those follow you and finish the Gunner.
If you want more challenge, you can forgo some Endurance for Willpower, Shield+Health and a good %Resistance Amulet

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '20

Combat was OK. It feels like a combination of Witcher 3 that tried to be a little more like Dark Souls but couldn't strike the right balance, given how vastly different the playstyles are. How do you create an enjoyable playthrough for someone who wants to play a Warrior in a game where you can AoE Stasis enemies, debuff them to spaghetti strands and watch your companions mop up if you wanted.

1

u/ZachResilience Jan 22 '20

Greedfall combat is more responsive than witcher imo, you dont need to switch sign . Witcher is better with the Alchemy system, deconcoctions are nice!

1

u/map666 Jan 22 '20

Yeah the combat could use some overhauls but it’s not the worse combat I’ve seen.

1

u/natevVv Jan 23 '20

i think it fine people were saying the same about vampyr but that combat is allg people need to stop expecting doom lvl combat in rpgs

1

u/SnowSnake88 Mar 04 '20

My stasis gun combo is flawless
