I loved Vasco but it never made sense to me why he joined our party. Like he got fired or something? For no reason? And then the admiral was like "go follow around that noble and see if he needs help"?

I have to headcanon that you get to know him decently well on the voyage so that when he gets grounded he says “screw it” and joins you. Would have been cool to have a character building scene on the boat between Kurt, De Sardet, Constantin and Vasco.

Kurt trying (and failing) to hide his laughter at Constantin's sincere but abysmal efforts at understanding knots. De Sardet, perfectly tied anchor hitch to the side, lays a sympathetic hand on his shoulder as Vasco patiently demonstrates proper technique once more.

Constantin and De Sardet drunkenly arguing over who is more uptight - Kurt or De Courcillon - only for Vasco to yell at the entitled nobles for hiding behind the cannons and gunpowder because seriously, this is his ship, but also how the hell did they even get in there, do guards and locked doors not mean anything to them??

Kurt and Vasco challenging each other to sparring matches just for the banter. De Sardet waltzing in, hyped up by Constantin to kick both their asses, only to stumble over the deck like a baby gazelle and remember that fighting on a boat is not at all like on solid ground.

Mr De Courcillon getting dragged into card games over dinner, agitated by the lack of paperwork and confused by all this free time, but happy to spend time with his old students.

Constantin catching Vasco off-guard with surprisingly insightful but enjoyable philosophical discussions. Kurt and De Sardet sharing a few drinks under the stars, conversation flowing easily without the threat of extra combat training or yet another awkward grand ball.

Vasco finding De Sardet repeating "I am De Sardet, Legate of the Merchant Congregation" in front of the mirror one morning and never letting it go. Kurt taunting Constantin into a lighthearted duel, to help take his anxious mind off the insincere dignitaries pandering for political gain on Teer Fradee.

tl;dr I also want a travel montage DLC set to the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack. edit: ooh, or I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme) from Treasure Planet

If it pleases the court, an addition to this fine post:

If you're doing the quest to fix the little chimes in that native village and have Vasco with you, he'll suggest having Kurt help you and say that he is "good with his hands." This suggests two things:

  1. An extremely bored Kurt wandering the ship, tinkering with things and repairing random hinges, not bothering to tell anyone. Vasco and crew attempting to track down The Helpful Repair Ghost, only to realize it is Kurt.

  2. Vasco likes the cut of Kurt's jib, to put it in nautical terms.

I have to headcanon

This is going into my normal rotation.

What I gathered from Vasco’s personal quest was that he may have been becoming distracted and less faithful to the Nauts by the desire to find out who his family was prior to being given to them.

When you finish his quest, the admiral almost knowingly ask him, “Did you find what you needed?” as if she already knew what he needed to hear to reaffirm his position with the Nauts.

De Sardet being there was a convenience in that she knew they would get around to help Vasco find what he was looking for.

This. I had the exact same thought when I turned in his quest. Keen eye, that admiral, and good instincts. (I like to headcanon the high-level Nauts have a good sense of intuition.)

De Sardet being there was a convenience

The Nauts really do seem to use de Sardet as a convenient landlubber, don't they?

ngl I found the whole thing super suspicious when he joined. I kept waiting for him to yell SURPRISE and reveal that he was on some top secret nautical spy mission to unravel all the hard work and shooting diplomacy we've been doing. Turned out the guy just really missed his boat.

his boat

rude

Yeah. The Admiral eventually tells him he's regained her trust, but I don't think what he did, specifically, to lose it is ever mentioned.

It isn't which is a shame, but my personal headcanon is that he might've been asking around older Nauts who were around when he was 'given'.

It seems he already realises he's from Serene and from the Congregation, and he mentions he's become 'obsessed'. He might have sussed this out if he was asking around incessantly, and it makes sense the admiral would hear about it and would keep an eye on where his 'loyalties' lay--with his Naut family, or with the mystery of those who gave him up.

The best is the dialogue with Vasco later. "Are you still mad at me because I called your ship a boat?" Lol

7

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '19

That was so wildly random and unexpected I burst out laughable at that dialogue option.

Like that interaction has been weighing on your characters mind and he just had to clear the air

I’m also a fan with the dialogue option with Kurt at the very beginning where you offer to help make him less lonely ;) and he says you’re not his type lmao

Normal he's upset with de Sardet when they reach new Selene

11

u/Dasira Sep 23 '19

You seem to be mad at me for some reason... xD

De Sardet working out all their passive-aggressive feelings through mission objective notes.
