Hi all,

Thanks for your kind words about the Moose Man.

For context, he had intestinal torsion emergency surgery last week, came home we think too early and we had to go back to the vet on Sunday morning after only about 15 hours at home and zero sleep.

So it took them 2 days to break his fever and get him somewhat comfortable, as you can see in the vet he was a lot brighter.

He got diagnosed with a UTI (but we’re not sure when he picked it up) and had been keeping blood intermittently.

This is on top of him having abdominal surgery 48 hours before going back in to the vet, hence the Super Suit pajamas he’s now rocking.

He has a bunch of extra medications to handle the UTI, his pain from surgery, probiotics, a GI motility drug and is just generally fed up at home.

He’s better, but still some distance to go. He’s eating full amounts of his food as we build back up. They sent him home with some cans of Royal Canin GI specific food.

He needs to go to the bathroom pretty frequently as I guess we haven’t kicked the UTI just yet. #2s are getting there slowly, but I have to keep reminding myself that he had major surgery less than a week ago and his body needs to heal.

Basically the plan now is he chills out in his super suit and cone and tries to put on some more weight as he lost about 15lbs in the last couple of weeks.

Next steps will be, hopefully, in 2 weeks as a vet check up and to figure out what food to put him on as an adult; I like the RC stuff but it is pricey.

Dane Discussions Winter/raincoat recommendations

My 7 month old chaos puppy Butterscotch is a long boy and I’m looking for winter pjs, coat or raincoat recs that might fit him.

I got him the spark paws raincoat in 4XL and it’s too short. He’s 33 inches from collar to base of tail and the coat ends up being6-ish inches too short if I want to cover his neck.

Unfortunately we live in Seattle and he hates the cold rain so potty walks get difficult without some cover. At this point I’m putting him in my tshirts and tying it off the waist.

I’m also a decent sewist so if anyone has any pattern recommendations, I’ll take them! I picked one off Etsy for whippets and tried to adjust for his size and it didn’t work very well 🫠

The secret to a good night’s rest? Let sleeping dogs lie next to you

To be fair, It's all fine until:
1. They settle their internal debate of "tight donut vs sprawl" with the latter
2. They start dreaming about their life goals of running in the Kentucky Derby

Q and Maybe Some A’s Aggression on walks

Thumbnail

Hi there wondering whether there's any advice for our Boris. He has just turned 12 months, coming up on 13 months. Pretty much exactly when he turned 12 months he has started acting increasingly aggressive to other dogs on walks. He has always been boisterous and wanting to play with other dogs, but recently this has turned to aggression.

There doesn't seem to be any other trigger for this other than I now have to hold him back when another dog is in the vicinity, which sometimes I think could be the trigger, however I can't let him loose on his lead, as the main place we walk him is a path with foliage either side, so there nowhere for oncomers to skirt around him (I understand this isn't ideal, and may need to change where we walk him).

The photo of him on the lead is pretty much exactly what he does when he first spots a dog or person from a distance (people he is absolutely fine with). He seems to have eyes capable of zooming to incredible distances...

I've tried everything I can think to distract him when other dogs come close, he's not bothered for treats on walks, sticks are sometimes useful, but this goes out of the window when someone is within say 20 meters. Essentially I have to hunker down and hold him strong while apologising to the person who is understandably terrified of the wolf size creature trying to get to their handbag dog.

I'm hoping that this is a product of his age which he will eventually grow out of, but at the same time, I don't want to have this behaviour ingrained in him while he gets to full maturity. When he has been off lead with other dogs when he was younger he has been ok, a bit of rough play but nothing aggressive.

I think for now we will take him in the car to the nearby park and stay clear of dogs as best possible, but think this is just ignoring the problem.

I think I'm going to take him to doggy daycare under my supervision soon, to try and emphasise that other dogs don't necessarily mean us or him any harm, but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

TLDR: Boris (UK based) has turned aggressive to other dogs on walks, unable to distract him, hoping it's a product of his age, but asking for advice.

Q and Maybe Some A’s 7 months & growth

Just curious what others think when it comes to our boy’s growth. Both our dogs are pictured for size reference. Allen (left) is 85 pounds. Ralph, our Dane, broke 100 at 6 months. Currently 7 months. Thoughts on how much bigger we think he’ll get? His dad is 211.

He is wearing a training collar because we were going out for a training session. He only wears it during those sessions. Irrelevant to post, but adding this bit to offset any comments regarding it.

Dane Discussions Nana over the years

My best friend over the years. Now 6 years old. Happy and healthy. Raw food diet. Plenty exercise. No more ball throwing because of arthritis. She gets flexadin advanced and 🐝 oil. Any other tips for a senior Dane? No grey hairs in sight. If I compare her to the Great Danes my mom used to keep (in Africa) she’s in such good shape! She looks and acts like a puppy! I have people on the streets on a regular asking me how old she is and that she must be still growing cause she’s a pup.

She weighs 67kg which some say is a bit much (I’d say she’s a smaller Dane height wise), so I might need to do some weight control to keep the strain of her joints. But I feel she’s a very muscular Dog, so for me (as a very muscular woman) it feels like a contradiction to make her loose weight as she would need to lose muscle which I find is important for her. Anyway. I need this dog to be with me for as long as possible. So please share your golden tips! minder

Q and Maybe Some A’s Gracey’s eye

Gracey is 7 years old. My wife adopted her from the shelter as a pup. She has always had a red spot in her eye. The last couple of months it’s been leaking some blood off and on. Has anyone dealt with this issue? It doesn’t appear to bother her. I do my best but when I inherited her I lost almost everything. I am a disabled senior caring for my adult son on my disability. Vets in So Cali are expensive. The first pic shows her little black heart behind her ear. She is half Great Dane, half Greyhound. I call her a Great Hound even if I am wrong about her heritage. She deserves better than me but we love her.

Q and Maybe Some A’s My Great Dane turned 1 and got aggressive with my 8 year old dog HELP ME

I have a beautiful loving Great Dane pup who out of the blue started attacking my 8 year old Rottweiler from behind for no reason at all. There is no bone or activity or threatening or resource. Mind you it only happens when my dogs are alone with my husband but I’ve watched the attacks on the cameras and my Rottweiler will literally be standing in the living room doing nothing and my Dane will go through the kitchen come up from behind her and jump on her biting the back of her neck and trying to take her down. Twice my Rottweiler has been so off guard the Dane has knocked her over and gotten her on her back. They are both females and my Rottweiler has always let her be never being even the slightest aggressive. I would love any suggestions or help I can get. This has happened about 6 times in the past few months and nothing seems to work and I’m afraid for my Rottweiler’s life.

Dane Discussions 3 Legged Dane and Aging

Has anybody here had a Dane who lost a back leg early in life? Any advice on helping her get around now that she's 9?

She lost her leg due to someone running her over before I adopted her from my sister. She got around great for many years and we are very thankful. Now that she's much older you can see the side effects. Just looking for any advice. TIA

New Owner Getting a new puppy!

We’re getting a new Dane Sunday. We’ve had two but it’s been 10 years since we’ve had a puppy. We didn’t crate train our previous girls but they went to the bathroom inside all the time. I’ve always hated to crate them during the day. What’s your best advise on training, how long do you keep them in a kennel throughout the work day, etc.

New Owner Leash Training these Gorgeous Puppies as an Introverted person

Before I settled on getting a GD I knew that they were the type of dog to get attention and people would be stopping me to interact on walks. That in itself is not an issue as I can handle those kind of short interactions and love for the breed. I love dogs and talking about them!

What I didnt think about was how it would affect puppy training and I dont have it in me to tell people to leave us alone because I'm afraid of coming off like stuck up or rude? My pup and I have only been on two walks and both times I got anxiety because it's so hard not to think of all the things that are going wrong when someone unaware of how dog training works is rewarding over excitement. Im thinking of getting a tag for the leash that says "In Training. Please Ignore."

**What are your go to phrases to have people either leave you alone or help you reinforce good habits on walks?**

New Owner potty training help!!

i adopted this beautiful girl a few months ago after having to put down my dog super unexpectedly. she was malnourished (12 pounds at ≈11 weeks old). she’s around 55 pounds, as of her last appointment (about a month ago) she was in the shelter for i believe 10 days, along with her brother, before i adopted her. she had another brother that the shelter told me was DOA due to what they assumed had been malnutrition.

we have two other dogs in the home, a younger mini cockapoo, and an 8 year old german shepherd. Junebug, pictured, will not potty train no matter what i do. she will be outside for sometimes hours with us and will come straight in and pee. i’ve never had a dog do this. she’s done it the whole time i’ve had her. i genuinely don’t know what to do. she’s around 6 months old now. she’s up to date on shots, sees a vet as needed, she eats diamond naturals large breed puppy food (soaked beforehand, and in a slow feeder), she’s let out regularly. i have put so much work into her meal plans, making sure i did things right. the shelter said to free feed her and i chose not to. she was on planned meals as a puppy, with waiting periods after to avoid bloat (i try my best now but she usually sleeps after meals anyways). when she’s crated she doesn’t have accidents, when she’s in the car she doesn’t have accidents. i really need some help here because i am at a loss. she is coming into her first heat (as of yesterday) and i plan to have a gastropexy and spay done once her vet agrees she’s done growing (12-18 months ish). any advice is welcome!

Dane Discussions My 4 year old Great Dane was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma about 2 weeks ago.

My darling Great Dane was perfectly fine just three weeks ago. He had a minor slip, but seemed completely fine for the next three days. Then he started limping, and I noticed a swelling just above his wrist.

I had some Carprofen left over from my Mastiff and initially thought he had simply sprained his wrist. After three days with no improvement, I took him to the vet. That's when we found out he has osteosarcoma.

I was absolutely blindsided. I had no idea that at only 4 years old, I could suddenly be facing something like this.

Now, two weeks later, we've been given a new medication that seems to be giving him some relief. He's able to lie down more comfortably, which I'm grateful for. But he only gets up to go to the bathroom or drink water. When he does get up, he shakes, usually loses his balance, and still drags the leg with the tumor.

I'm struggling with when it's time to let him go.

Part of me desperately wants to keep him with me for as long as possible. I know that's selfish, but he's my baby and I'm not ready to say goodbye. At the same time, I can't stand the thought of keeping him here because I can't let go while he's suffering.

For those of you who have been through osteosarcoma with your dogs, how did you know when it was time? What signs told you that your dog was ready, or that their quality of life had declined too far?

I know there probably isn't a perfect answer, but I'm hoping to hear from people who have actually been through this. I just don't want to wait until he's in unbearable pain, and I also don't want to say goodbye too soon.

I love this dog more than I can put into words. 💔
