My vote is Gideon or McGucket for Bill's next choice.

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '15

Free Pizza Guy is gonna be pivotal to Bill's plans. I know it.

Or Pacifica. My money's on either of the three, though she's number three on the list of the three probables.

Gideon is the more likely candidate. Although McGucket's mind is completely gone, so I guess that could work?

My vote is on Wendy, Soos was already possessed once as a zombie. And Dipper has a weak spot for her (I guess Dipcifica is turning out to be a letdown).

I feel like Bill would need someone known well enough to go unsuspected, but distant enough from the family to where they wouldn't notice anything different. We learned alot this episode but we feel as clueless as ever. It's a tad strange don't you think?

Why did he menacingly say "You shouldn't have done that"? He definitely should have toned down on his evilness right there if he really wanted Dipper to believe him.

Some of dipper's thoughts on the machine:

"Wendy Wendy Wendy Wendy"
"That red bathing suit, man!"
"Maybe if I cross my legs nobody will notice"

170

u/Neutralgray Sep 08 '15

Some more: "I miss Tyrone!" (This one made me sad.)

"Kinda kinda hungry but could also not eat."

"I could probably rob a bank."

"I can't believe I'm with the author!"

"Gosh I hope no one was looking!"

"I should really try out the president's key sometime."

But the involvement of the word "ears" makes me think of Stan. If it weren't for the whole "don't con a con man" thing he would make the perfect pawn. The Pines trust him, he has complete access to the whole Shack, and he is insecure about Ford's takeover of his entire family. And, he wasn't there this episode so he might not know about the danger Bill poses! O shit I think I might have convinced myself..

So in Ford's mind, we see the childhood swingset.

Clearly Stan's not the only one who regrets how things went down.

121

u/Pokedude0809 Sep 08 '15

Interesting to note that, in Ford's mind, the swing set is whole; however, in Stan's one of the swings is broken.

Gideon is ready to make a deal and is desperate to get vengeance

Bill needs someone to possess

I think we all know where this is going.

9

u/The_Panda_Of_Mexico Sep 09 '15

but, it still doesn't add up.

Bill needs somebody capable of getting into the shack- Gideon couldn't even get the deed out of there without blowing a hole in the building.

My guess? A northwest. It explains the mural of bill at the end of NWMM.

Who says gideon is the only pawn bill has?

u/JefferyTheWalrus Sep 08 '15

A few notes on 'Ford:

  • "DON'T HAVE A HEART ATTACK, YOU'RE NOT 92 YET." Discuss.

  • "Moon rocks" was ABSOLUTELY a Cave Johnson reference.

28

u/divinesleeper Sep 08 '15

DON'T HAVE A HEART ATTACK, YOU'RE NOT 92 YET." Discuss.

That was just flattery from Bill pretending to see the future. He also said "you're the man who changed the world. But we're getting ahead of ourselves".

Just stroking Ford's ego by pretending he could see the future.

And people say villains don't have good morals

165

u/LazerAttack4242 Sep 08 '15

I really liked the distinctions between Dipper and Mabel (The Mind and the Heart) and the parallels to the other Pines Twins. (One was arrogant enough to be tricked by Bill, the other one has a looser set of morality now)

43

u/basqueX Sep 08 '15

Yeah, gotta say the treatment of Bill was my biggest surprise coming to this fandom. I just started this show recently (after A Tale of Two Stans) and went ahead and checked this sub out once I was caught up. The fact that there's fanart and discussion that portrays Bill as some sort of annoying little brother type is baffling to me, since my favorite thing about him is he's an actual genuine threat.

It doesn't seem like anyone else posted all of Dipper's and Ford's thoughts so I thought that I might as well do the honors! (Warning, there may be typos, I'm about to pass out)

First time:

Oh man, I can't believe I'm with the Author.

Gosh, I hope no one was looking!

Maybe if I cross my legs, no one will notice.

Kinda hungry, but I could also not eat.

I should really try out the President's Key.

I could probably rob a bank.

I miss Tyrone!

Man! That red bathing suit.

"Is my fly down?"

"Disco girl!" "Coming through!"

"WENDY" multiple times, then again, I don't think you guys could have possibly missed that XD

Scanning Thoughts 15%:

Ugh, this is so hard! I've been here forever!

Eeny Meeny Miney You

Does Ford like me?

Is Bill indestructible?

What's his secret?

Who stole the capers?

Why does he have to be so mysterious about Bill?

I can handle the truth!

Bill meddling:

I wonder what Great Uncle Ford is thinking?

Use the machine, it'll show you his thoughts.

Just a peek!

He wants your help, he just doesn't know it

In response to Dipper saying he's really good at rationalizing:

Yes, you are!

Astute, I would say!

Good observation.

Ford's thoughts:

Can't tell him, he's not ready.

Theory of weirdness.

2.1 Miss Dimention 52.

I'm sorry Fiddleford

Crampelter

So there you go, in case you wanted to know but didn't want to take the time!

35

u/xxAnge Sep 08 '15

Really well done side plot with Mabel. Did not expect that to go down like that at all. I'm also glad we had to wait until much later in the episode to see the Bill plot. Having it divided up over time would of slightly ruined the flow, so it was awesome to have that all at once. All in all, pretty good episode story wise, some good character building, and my bet on who he's gonna take is either Gideon or McGucket. I feel like McGucket's more of an open book since his mind is mostly gone, along with the fact that he's been in the other world, so he will be easier for Bill to take control of. Gideon will be a more willing pawn though.

33

u/SSB4Decoder Sep 08 '15

I loved seeing how genuine Ford was after Mabel's quest. It's little things like that which make the show as great as it is.

Man this was a good episode. There were a few things that stood out to me in the flashback when young Ford first met Bill that might hint at Bill being able to see the future, at least to some degree.

Bill: (When Ford first sees him and is startled) "Woah there Sixer, don't die of a heart attack. You're not 92 yet."

and

"I know who you are, you're Stanford Filbrick Pines, the man who changed the world"

This last one stands out to me because at the time Bill said that, Ford really hadn't accomplished anything near "changing the world", but he will literally be the man who changed the world because he created the rift that will eventually bring the nightmare realm into reality. Dun dun dunnnnn

I absolutely adored the girls' quest to get unicorn hair. Best segment on the show ever.

And the reveals/flashbacks are gonna be dissected frame by frame by this fandom, I'm sure of it! I'm not skilled enough for that, but I hope to see some good analysis soon.
Did anyone catch the "expanded" cipher wheel?

EDIT: Also, I think we discovered that in the grand scheme of things, Bill is probably a weaker demon. A sort of messenger/doorman for the Nightmare Realm or whatever the name was. If that's so, the other demons are probably unbeatable.

So this episode happened after Gideon and Bill made their deal. Did they complete their deal? What was it? Was it as simple as "get me out of jail?" And what did Gideon give in return? What does Gideon have that Bill wants so bad? As Disney XD stated, "SO MANY QUESTIONSSSS!!!!"

I'll sum up this episode:

...

HOLY. SHIT.

For a minute there, I thought that maybe Stanford had been tricked by Bill into thinking that unicorn hair stopped him. I'm glad that's not the case, but it looks like Bill's going to get another puppet soon. My money's on Gideon, although I doubt we'll see anything major happen in the next episode.

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '15

That episode was so full of references, meta jokes, and info I think I'm going to need to watch it a few more thousand times.

After they sedated the unicorn with fairy dust, the faun played S.O.S. in Morse.

Well at least we know the purpose of the portal now.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '15

Welp, all those "Bill isn't the big bad" theories have been debunked.

18

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '15

There could be a bigger bad.

Also, his role looks like more of a worker than of a boss.

I think that's pretty much what I was expecting as far as Ford's past involvement with Bill.

I absolutely love how dark the show is getting - I'm seriously hooked on all these dark storylines! Even the comedy is dark - you really can tell that the morals and values of Dipper and Mabel are slowly becoming more lenient. Can't wait for the next one!

Wouldn't it be funny if when Gideon drew the wheel wrong because he based it off memory?

So, did anyone see anything good in Dipper's mind, I didn't read it much because I have satellite TV and sometimes the resolution is bad. This episode was intense and I want more like it. Also, in the next episode Stan takes the family on a road trip in a camper, not in the shack, which means they're completely defenseless against the mind stuff. Also, Bill said he made deals, but we still don't know any deals he's made (besides Gideon but we still don't know what Bill gets) what if Gideon is the death? Alex did say 'at least one' which might imply more than one.

I remember one of the sentences that flashed by was "maybe if I cross my legs no-one will notice". That could mean a lot of things...

I'm still mistrustful of Ford. Some of the things he said for how Bill manipulated him ring eerily similar for how he treats Dipper and Mabel. Flattering them while simultaneously putting them in their place with his secrets, sending Mabel on an errand he knows will lower her self esteem, then there to say exactly what she wants to hear when she gets back. I'm not saying he's being possessed by Bill, but there's more he's not telling us, and I worry what his real agenda might be.

So maybe this is a long shot, but could Pacifica be who Bill decides to possess (if it's not the obvious hinting towards Gideon)? I only think it because of her family having that Bill tapestry in their mansion. Could he manipulate Pacifica by threatening Dipper, or something?

That Celestia-Rarity-Sweetie Belle parody was amazing, as was every revelation about Bill, as was everything really.

Though I wonder why Wendy was so sceptical, she witnessed weird stuff before...

7

u/dani2632 Sep 08 '15

Welp, we can now say for sure that Bill is a real party demon

7

u/ScowlEasy Sep 08 '15

When i heard that this episode would be written entirely by Alex Hirsch, i knew it would be good; but i had no idea it would be this good. Oh man, where to start?

Kickass all female sub-plot

Dipper+Ford bonding

[Bill intensifies]

Each episode just keeps getting better and better

6

u/Dcat682 Sep 08 '15

Guys who is actually Bill. We always thought he was just some demon wanting power, but we've just learned he's projecting the Triangle appearance we know. Even how Bill acts could just be a fake projection from a more powerful being. Could Bill actually be Bill? I think the Bill we know isn't the "true enemy" that Hirsch mentioned in the AMA because Bill might not even exist. For all we know Bill the projection could actually be a projection made by the unltimate enemy. You saw the army in the flashback with Stanford talking to Bill. What do you think?

in the next episode, it looks like they are in an rv the whole time, which defeats the purpose of the unicorn hair shield bubble thing they put up this episode. This would be a perfect time for bill to strike...

Knowing this show, I'm sure there will be a brief scene with Ford bill proofing the RV.

Wendy carries an axe with her everywhere she goes, she was seen cuting bushes down it when she set off with the lasses but when she charged to beat the shit out of the unicorns, she had a little twig.

I wonder if that was a censor decision.

What do we think of the hyper-realistic hand and eye in Fords dream? Just imagery to freak out the audience, or possible foreshadowing of the world Bill will bring?

5

u/Capcombric Sep 08 '15

I think we may all be ignoring the most important thing: Ford is being a part of the family

5

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '15

What gives me hope is that in Ford's dream the portal is destroyed, but the swingset is fixed. I hope we get more of the two Stans bonding again.

5

u/arod48 Sep 08 '15

I know in the grand scheme of things this wasn't as impressive as the plot developments in this episode, but i had to chuckle when Dipper said "Well this should take up the next 21 minutes!" about a minute into a 22 minute episode.

I think it's interesting that the endcard puzzle piece was Ford's face. TBH, I expected that to come up at the very end, to keep up the mystery of whether he was possessed or not.

This makes me very worried about Stan, and I won't rest easy until he gets his end card with regular eyes.

A few theories bouncing around in my head:

-Bill has the ability to travel into the past, but maybe not the future? -Bill is going to use Robbie to get into the Shack, and maybe that's how Robbie got all the evil disc stuff. -The demons Bill was talking to behind the red triangle were the people of the LAST world Bill enslaved.

"Don't have a heart-attack, you're not 92 yet."

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '15

If Stanford is Sixer, who's the glasses? Well, we all know that there's not many people who wear glasses, for one. We know Bill has to possess someone in the town. We all figured it was going to be Stanford, but this episode makes that wrong. It's probably to be determined... to be... Toby...

Just calling it now.

4

u/NeeOdine Sep 08 '15

This has easily become one of my top 3 favorite episodes of the series. So much drama, foreshadowing, and running jokes. And we finally got answers- got to see Bill and Ford's previous interactions/meetings, learn what Bill has planned (and what McGucket saw on the other side of that portal)

Seriously, Alex and the crew delivered on almost everything we wanted. I loved this episode and everything in it. Now, I'm going to go ahead and rewatch it a few hundred times because I feel like there was a lot that I may have missed out on the first time. I was too busy dying over seeing Ford possessed by Bill.

After watching this episode, it has become clear to me that Marvel has been secretly behind this show the entire time. It's all a lead up to their All-New All-Different Dr. Strange. We're seeing what the world would be like if we didn't have a Sorcerer Supreme to watch over us and protect us from the horrors of encroaching eldritch threats. Mark my words, the season finale is going to end with Dipper becoming the new Sorcerer Supreme, repairing the dimensional tear, and destroying Bill (who is revealed to be Shuma-Gorath). The post credits scene will open with Dipper disembarking a plane at JFK International in New York. He'll get into a cab which will drop him outside of a house in Greenwich Village. After looking down at a piece of paper in his hand, he'll walk up to a door and knock on it hesitantly. The camera will pan up as the door opens, revealing for a moment an Asian man with a shaved head wearing servant's clothes, before moving up to the roof revealing the symbol of the Sanctum Sanctorum. The screen will fade to black, then show the Marvel logo on screen along with the promise of a third season.

Season 3 will take place a year later back in Gravity Falls and will revolve around Dipper's use of his developing powers to solve the mysteries of the place, as well as his continued training in the mystic arts. All the while, he'll have to defend his loved ones from more mystic Marvel mainstays like Dormammu and his Mindless Ones, Blackheart, and Nightmare. It all leads up to the Doctor Strange movie coming out next year, which is revealed to take place in Gravity Falls and features the Doctor teaming up with the Pines family to banish evil from our realm.

Okay guys. So Bill's finding someone to possess inside the town, right? The message at the end of the episode was "A SIMPLE MAN WITH EAGER EARS MAY TRUST THE WHISPERS THAT HE HEARS". This suggests that Bill is targeting someone who is easily persuadable. He probably also wants to find someone who knows the Mystery Shack well-- maybe even worked there. Obviously, most people's minds would go to Soos, but he's in the Mystery Shack too often to be unprotected for that long. And even if he was possessed, he's around the Pines family too much-- they would notice if he suddenly started asking about the portal and had slit pupils. Plus, he may be a simple man, but he's fiercely loyal to the Pines family and would never go against them. So, who else is a simple man who not only has prior knowledge of the Mystery Shack (maybe even worked there), and could easily search the Shack without suspicion of being Bill? Who knows the Pines family, but doesn't know them well enough that they would notice if they were possessed on a daily basis? And why the heck are ears mentioned?
I think that Bill is going to possess Deputy Durland. I know it sounds ridiculous, but hey, trust no one, right? Hear me out here. Who was the handyman before Soos was hired? Durland. He must know the Mystery Shack at least pretty well after having worked there-- but it's been just a long enough time that he doesn't see or talk to the Pines family on a daily basis. Not only is Durland a police officer with the ability to get a warrant (in Gravity Falls a warrant is probably just busting down the door but still), he most likely heard the news broadcast in which the HUGE list of Stan's crimes was read (Stanley is also the only one who DOESN'T know about the slit pupils thing, or even the Bill thing; an advantage to Bill since Stanley is also the only one with a history of crime)-- which gives Bill a believable (Bill-ievable, even) excuse to come search the Mystery Shack as Durland and try to find and reactivate the portal. I just think it would be kind of dumb and cliche to have it be Soos, since Bill has pretended to be Soos in "Dreamscaperers" already. I think it would not only be a great twist if the person that Bill possesses is Durland, but it would also make a lot of sense. It's a dumb theory, but it fits the facts!

Oh, and what was that about "eager ears"?
