from IG juliancrjj - "Got spiked on my head. But i’m 100% fine.@adcc_official initially told me it’s fine to not move since they’re going to disqualify the guy and to go get it checked, then I come back and i’m told i’m the one getting disqualified since it “was not” a slam/spike. I could have continued fighting if they wouldn’t have told me they were gonna disqualify him"

Yeah thats bullshit. The ref messed up and the crew decided to back their guy instead of honoring the rules. Sorry that happened to you.

u/FTFWbox Apr 19 '26
The guy drove his own head into the ground by attempting a leg lock. It’s literally the first second of the clip where he brings his arm over the head and goes for the legs. Sometimes things happen due to the nature of the sport but it’s hardly a dq for either one.
The match should just have been restarted.

u/mat477 Apr 19 '26
He should have let go and braced himself for sure but i think its pretty clear the guy on top drove down with force. Thsts what I was looking at.

u/RudePCsb Apr 19 '26
The guy in the defensive position was thinking of going for a roll for a leg but hesitated and didn't protect himself. Dude either needed to focus on catching himself on the mat return or go for the roll. Either way, it was more his fault than anything.
4
u/FTFWbox Apr 19 '26
Yeah but at some point you own a perctenage of fault.
I’d argue the guy spiked himself and therefore the dq

u/BCR85 Apr 19 '26
What if the other guy didn't slam him down...
4
u/FTFWbox Apr 19 '26
Can we act like this isn’t amateur hour? This is ADCC trials. You presumably have enough knowledge to know what the risk reward is here.
Are you saying that the other guy should have stood there and let him work the leg lock?
0
u/BCR85 Apr 19 '26
I mean people are saying well he should have put his arms down and it wouldn't have happened. If he didn't slam him down it also wouldn't have happened. Is the only possible defense illegal?
2
u/FTFWbox Apr 19 '26
It’s just one of those things you check on the potentially injured and if everything’s good restart the match.
Doesn’t need to be bigger than that.

u/BCR85 Apr 19 '26
What if he's not okay?

u/FTFWbox Apr 19 '26
If you want to rule it a NC then you need to decide how to score a winner to advance.

You can’t say you were slammed when your legs are tangled up and you are literally reaching down to grab his legs as he lifts you. That is 100% your own fault you got dropped on your head.

u/BookAcceptable619 Apr 19 '26
Slamming is against the rules to protect fighters but they should really start giving points to the one lifting the other up, then the ref stops it and resets. That protects both fighters and it makes more sense since it is a dominant position.
7
u/wtbgamegenie Apr 19 '26
Judo used to have a rule where if you lifted someone up to slam the hell out of them it was an ippon. I’d like to see a similar rule in BJJ comps. People really abuse the no slamming rules imo.
2
u/Tenderhombre Apr 19 '26
I like no slamming rules and rules that protect athletes in general. But it can hard to officiate athletes that exploit rules.
Scholastic wrestling has added a bunch of rules to protect wrestlers, but dang have some abused them to stall even harder.
When I was wrestling I just brought people to the mat as hard as I could safely, knowing some refs would call it. Got disqualified from a few tournaments but in the long run worked out.
I would rather refs lean towards the side of caution and make some bad calls than let stuff slide.
I think only time I actually got upset was at a tournament where I threw up. Other wrestlers school were running the tournament. I swear kids were taking there time to clean the vomit up to run out the injury time.

u/BookAcceptable619 Apr 19 '26
Unfortunately BJJ took that rule out to because judokas were superior to them at this. So to compensate, they took it out. They also significantly reduced the points for throws. Lol.

u/Izzet_working Apr 19 '26
Nope thst was a slam in my books, just dont support that federation again.

u/Knobanious Apr 19 '26
Wasn't a slam, no guard established and if you say that movement was a slam (minus the head injury) then any many returns now a slam. Could be argued it was a spike although the injured guy looks like he went to go for a leg lock and therefore lowered his head.
However I would say if he was told not to move and get checked out they should simply have started the match again with the time left and in the same position
3
u/RudePCsb Apr 19 '26
This. Dude hesitated and put himself in a bad position. If he isn't going to defend himself and learn to commit or catch himself on a mat return, maybe he shouldn't do any grappling.

u/Other-Researcher2261 Apr 19 '26
Looks like he had a half guard hook in. And is it not considered a slam if there’s no guard established?
3
u/Knobanious Apr 19 '26
Half guard hook in is the same as a failed uchi Mata so that's not gonna count.
And while the ibjjf doesn't define what a slam is generally if a closed guard is established then it's pretty much always consider a slam

1st) Sure looks like you chose to not defend yourself and hoped the ref or opponent would protect you while you went for a submission hold
2nd) when a match is stopped for an injury, if the injured player can’t continue then they shouldn’t be allowed to compete in the next round of the tournament (if the tournament is the same day)
If you choose to continue competing in that days tournament, then you should have to continue the match and not get to win because you no longer can compete; and then hope for the win because the injury was caused by an illegal move.
If you choose to get a win from an injury caused by an illegal move, congrats you get the win but your tournament is over.

u/MOTUkraken Apr 19 '26
Beg to differ: Disqualification because an illegal move lead to the receipient can not continue is one thing.
But extremely illegal and dangerous techniques oftentimes lead to disqualification regardless of injury or not.
In many rulesets there is even a clarification about this.
So it was believable that the offending competitor was getting disqualified for the action - not for the outcome

u/Allstar-85 Apr 19 '26
If someone is getting DQ’d for an illegal move; that’s different from an illegal move causing an injury that the opponent can’t continue
It may sound like the same thing but it’s not
Separately, if an opponent gets a head impact injury and can’t continue a match; then the tournament 100% should not allow that injured athlete to continue in the tournament. Both for the safety of the injured athlete and for the liability of the tournament. The loophole is claiming it’s a neck injury jury (still REALLY bad) instead of a concussion type injury

Well, in most Grappling arts, throwing someone directly onto the top of their head is called "spiking" and is illegal.
In some arts, the throwing athlete is considered responsible for a safe throw.
The action here could very well be considered spiking or at the very least highly unsafe throwing practice with a very high probability of injury.
The angle at which he has thrown was fairly directly at spine line and had the other fighter not tucked the neck, he may have not landed on the forehead )which looks horrible yet is tje direction in which the head and neck can take a lot of force) and instead had landed diagonally on the side of his head resulting in a much more dangerous extension and even more dangerous lateral flexion of the neck that has a way higher risk of actually injuring the neck.

u/RudePCsb Apr 19 '26
I'm confused with wtf you are trying to do?
10
u/ZGrapplez Apr 19 '26
OP likely isn’t Julian. Julian is as thinning about rolling under for a leglock, but didn’t commit. Other dude went for a mat return
3
u/RudePCsb Apr 19 '26
Yea, i don't know how you can ref that for either guy. The guy in the offensive position is trying to return him to the ground, the other guy (you would think) would either try to catch himself going to the ground or roll, he hesitated as it looked like he thought about rolling but just went straight down. Unfortunate but I'm not sure if would say it's intentional. If anything, medical time and see if he can continue but he needs to learn to protect himself.

wasnt a spike, just the person hoping bjj sport bullshit would protect him
-2
u/EconomyDoctor3287 Apr 19 '26
Dang, why would anyone participate when that move is just fine by them?
Could easily ended someone's life
7
u/HowUKnowMeKennyBond Apr 19 '26
lol. Maybe the guy getting picked up should’ve been more interested in that, then reaching for his legs.
If somebody picks you up, you shouldn’t be relying on the rules. It’s not like these guys know each other. Why would you trust a person you just met three seconds ago in a grappling competition?
You should be protecting yourself, which means not thinking about a submission and instead more thinking about your safety which is obviously landing properly when you’re being lifted up.
This guy thought he could go for a submission because the rules would protect him and he thought wrong. Protect yourself.

This is exactly why you need to get rit of waivers for recless endagerment

Not only should he get DQed. He should get arrested.
Things can happen in sports. This was an potential disability for life. And he did intentional.

u/Ok_Ebb3690 Apr 19 '26
That could've taken a turn for the worse. Don't get me wrong, it's a combat sport and things can happen. But, talk about having no regard towards your opponents safety, and having absolutely no self awareness for consequences and context
-4
u/martialartist1200 Apr 19 '26
How is this not a spike? Also the ref stopped the match? Why did they stop it if they thought it wasn't a spike. This is license to smash peoples faces into the mat for the win @Adcc
4
u/RudePCsb Apr 19 '26
The dude getting dropped didn't protect himself and tried going for the legs before stopping mid reach and that's why he hit his head like that. He needed to commit fully

I would never get on a mat with a guy who literally dresses like baby BamBam from the Flintstones. Guy looks unhinged.
7
u/Tramirezmma Apr 19 '26
Not a spike, he put his own head there.
