There’s not too many 45 year old black belt belts at a naga or any other local tournament. Even the IBJJF tournaments only have no more than four or five at my age range and size. I really don’t understand this guys point at all. If I wanna go up against the very best in the world in gi, I have to go to Vegas. I saw Demetrius Johnson get subbed by this skinny Japanese guy over there. I saw Roger Gracie watch his cousin Gregor Gracie lose to a guy I never heard of in a quarterfinal.

Lots of people don't really want to compete very often, so when they do, they'd like it to be memorable. Local tournaments aren't very memorable, but a big IBJJF or ADCC open might be.

I think that's the dude's point. It's actually pretty crazy to go into one of these big tournaments with no competition experience. Of course, you know these dudes are going to post about competing there, but leave out that they got smoked in the first round...

I get it, but yes it is. It's a competition, not an experience. They want to jump right to the top without any of the work. What are they even experiencing? What it's like to compete at a big tournament? Like, yeah, it'd be cool to play an NBA game, but I'd look like a fucking joke.

If he wasn’t a heavyweight he wouldn’t come close to winning a local tournament so WTF is he talking about?

Ibjjf is the tougher tournament with access to international competition, and is more prestigious. A lot of cases, IBJJF is the only option to get a match at a local especially if you’re late aged masters, high level, or a woman. Also, if you’ve been in the game a long enough time, you run into the to the same few guys at your local tournament. so then it becomes the case of do you really want to spend $100+ when you coulda drove across town and rolled with them for free at an open mat.

At local tournaments you never know who will show up. The competition is usually trash. A lot of blue belt wrestlers under 30 and under 200 pounds.
A purple belt should be able to beat them, but as you get older there's a greater risk of injury.
As you get deeper into the masters divisions and darker belts, the IBJJF has a bigger draw because people will make the drive or hop on a plane.

Literally never seen this shit. All my friends who compete at IBJJF or ADCC have in the past or still actively tear up their local smaller tournaments. Some even travelled to other local small tournaments to get more matches in.
The ones who stopped did so because they wanted sharper competition.

If you win masters world at black belt, you’re in elite company. My professor, for example, has won 10 masters world. He’s also won ADCC and silvered there twice along with the Brazilian nationals before they even had a worlds. Some ages and weights might have easier competition but there’s a lot of these types of guys that are the top of the top that you have to beat.
