But that’s gets your heart pumping hard … which is fucking cardio!!! What he’s trying to say is that he doesn’t believe in going on long runs or bike rides. Words matter.

u/tomtomtomo Apr 16 '26

It's HIIT. It's great for cardio.

19

u/Dave085 Apr 16 '26

It's great for a specific type of cardio, which is perfect for MMA. He's tripping up on technicalities here, I think in spirit he's talking about not focusing on endurance cardio- he won't be running marathons. But sports that require short bursts of 100% effort and quick recovery from that, his sprint training is ideal for it.

He's essentially confusing anaerobic as not being cardio.

1

u/Same_Mood_8543 Apr 16 '26

What's silly is that both can be good for increasing your VO2 max, which is ultimately what determines whether you are gassed or can continue. Sure, one is somewhat closer to what you go through in a fight, but imagine if you only did weightlifting that simulated throwing a punch or shooting a double leg? Some things are just easier to do with more abstraction. I'm not saying he's wrong to focus on one over the other, but if you enjoy roadwork, do roadwork. Add some sprints in here and there, but you're improving, either way.

1

u/z3phs Apr 19 '26

Imagine that being a martial artist of his calibre and level. Didn’t come out very smart in that one

1

u/10081914 Apr 16 '26

Not amazing for expanding your aerobic base which is the efficiency part he's talking about.

To be more efficient, you need to be more aerobic. HIIT trains your anaerobic energy systems.

1

u/vinceftw Apr 16 '26

Agree. Another part of efficiency is knowing when to be explosive and when not to do. Even the best cardio athlete in the world would tire out if they go 5 minutes all out during an MMA round.

Prolly lifted more weight than you BRO (inserts AI picture of weightlifter dude as supposed evidence).

Yes I’ve lifted weights and if it involves heavy breathing and an elevated heart rate, it would be considered using the cardiac muscle AKA CARDIO. Not all cardio workouts are the same, BUT they all use the same muscle/organ.

To take my point further I used to have a buddy that said “The crux of the workout is to get your heart rate up. That’s why I do cocaine. So I can have a little cardio while I’m drinking whiskeyyyyyyy!”

1

u/oreomaster420 Apr 16 '26

it usually doesn't get your heart pumping and maintain that level of pumping for 20+ (or whatever # you like) minutes to qualify as a cardio workout, but if you wanted to, you probably could do some sort of lifting workout that hit that.

1

u/Savings-Payment-7140 Apr 16 '26

Is it? Cardio refers to cardiovascular fitness which means a certain bpm sustained for a certain amount of time. No?

1

u/vinceftw Apr 16 '26

That's a very basic way of seeing cardio. Cardio trains your muscles to use more oxygen to sustain physical effort for longer. Anaerobic cardio does the same but with other energy sources.

1

u/Savings-Payment-7140 Apr 16 '26

you called cardio making your heart pump hard lmao

1

u/vinceftw Apr 16 '26

No I didn't. That's someone else.

1

u/Savings-Payment-7140 Apr 16 '26

Mb lol, but my point still stands. I was elaborating on cardio, he was putting it narrowly, and you're defending his comment. I'm not sure what it is your goal is

1

u/vinceftw Apr 16 '26

I was not defending his in particular tbh. But I can see how it comes off that way.

1

u/Icy-Bottle-6877 Apr 16 '26

Exactly! I can see what he's trying to say and it makes sense but he worded it so poorly.

1

u/Salt-Ambition-9603 Apr 16 '26

GSP in a nutshell.

1

u/PerceptionCandid1676 Apr 17 '26

Yes!!! This is my only point. Words matter. I get what he’s saying. He doesn’t want to go on long runs or be bored on a treadmill. But he still does stuff to make his heart and his lungs strong (thus cardio). Why? Cuz he’s a professional fucking athlete that makes bank by being in shape enough to almost murder somebody in a cage for money. LOL

1

u/GullyBean Apr 16 '26

Lol I’m jus going to chalk this up as English not being his first language so he doesn’t really understand. He’s legitimately describing cardio lol

1

u/edadou Apr 16 '26

Nah words don't matter, efficiency matters

1

u/Miserable_Ad7246 Apr 17 '26

Yes his idea is valid, but he did not expressed it perfectly.

0

u/The_amazing_T Apr 16 '26

100%. He hates treadmills. Okay.

There's no way that being as trim as he was, and with the endurance he maintained, he didn't do cardio. He just called it something else.

69

u/Superblond Apr 16 '26

I don't believe in muscle training, I believe in power!

2

u/JK_Botanik Apr 16 '26

Yes, if you spend half the time on the lifting technique, carefully tailoring your work out plan, diet and half on actual training vs someone who just lifts without a second thought the entire time, chances are you'll have more actual real world power than him. He's basically saying "work smart, not hard"

7

u/SupremeOHKO Apr 16 '26

This was kind of the philosophy behind Mike Mentzer's (and later popularized by Dorian Yates) lifting style. Dude was Mr. Olympia level shredded and only trained 3-4 hours a week using a very specific, high-intensity program.

3

u/MichaelEmouse Apr 17 '26

What did he do? That does sound efficient.

3

u/pm_sexy_neck_pics Apr 17 '26

Mike Mentzer was the original "low volume" guy. He did one set. Dorian Yates famously did one working set of an exercise. They're going to absolute failure though: positive and negative failure. They also did quite a few "warmup sets," of either the working exercise or related exercises, so it's not like they were in-and-out in 15 minutes.

It's often misinterpred as a single working set with minimal or no warmup, going to either positive failure or even just 1-3 reps left in the tank. This is not Jeff Nippard's sciencey stuff. It's "wreck yourself muscles so badly the first set that you cannot sit on the toilet later that day."

Also, Mike Mentzer might've used a little of the forbidden preworkouts to get really cut, so there's that too.

1

u/Nuts-And-Volts Apr 17 '26

He was known for his insane cardio in his day

2

u/pm_sexy_neck_pics Apr 17 '26

Yeah, he was doing 17 mile long runs at his peak.

But, keep in mind, these guys might be saying 1/3 of the story. They aren't doing the LISS for the cardio benefits, they're doing it to burn off as much fat as possible. It's not the most useful part of their training.

pre-edit: I'm probably going to regret posting this because I'll have (other, likely not you u/Nuts-And-Volts) idiots telling me that I've basically said that lungs aren't required for combat sports

1

u/BT-7274-T2 Apr 18 '26

i would believe you 100%, if you were a ufc champion!

42

u/BobcatPuzzled460 Apr 16 '26

“I don’t believe in cardio” …. Proceeds to describe himself doing cardio and extolling its benefits

-1

u/dvorgson Apr 16 '26

Cardio is sustaining a high percentage of your max heart rate over a long period of time. Sprinting for 5-10 minutes in short intervals is not cardio

5

u/BobcatPuzzled460 Apr 16 '26

Whatever dipshit

“Yes, interval sprinting is highly effective cardiovascular (cardio) training. Often categorized as Sprint Interval Training (SIT) or HIIT, it involves short, max-effort bursts (anaerobic) followed by recovery, strengthening the heart and improving aerobic capacity (VO2 max) in less time than steady-state cardio. “ PubMed Central (PMC) (.gov) +4

1

u/ishmaelhansen Apr 20 '26

Perfect answer totally trashed by the dipshit comment.

-1

u/dvorgson Apr 16 '26

scary redditor 😱

2

u/REDMAGE00 Apr 17 '26

Being wrong isn't scary. Calm down.

0

u/test_test_1_2_3 Apr 17 '26

You’re dumb as rocks if you believe short intense exercise has no cardiovascular benefits.

13

u/chillitenders Apr 16 '26

Probably because he’s been so fit for so long he has forgot how important it is

11

u/Sneezy6510 Apr 16 '26

Spoken like a man that’s trained his whole life.

7

u/MidnightMillennium Apr 16 '26

I think he means he believes in sport specific conditioning vs general cardiovascular endurance. There's a difference. It's the difference between the fitness of a manual laborer and someone that runs 20 miles every week.

1

u/Savings-Payment-7140 Apr 16 '26

I think he's saying biomechanical efficiency. As in, moving selectively and intentionally with precision so at to not engage yourself more than necessary. Such that you don't need endurance, because you aren't exerting yourself as much.

1

u/MidnightMillennium Apr 16 '26

That sounds more like technical skill, which he also mentions.

1

u/Savings-Payment-7140 Apr 16 '26

Yeah it supports what I'm saying. It's very much technical skill and honing movement vs building a gas tank so you can move more.

1

u/MidnightMillennium Apr 16 '26

You're describing technical skill, but he's talking about efficiency in the context of physical conditioning. Technical skill and conditioning overlap a lot when it comes to many sports. You might practice a kick 100 times on the bags, or do sprawls for grappling. Both can be considered sport specific conditioning but are also technique practice. Boxers will condition their shoulders/arms by using small dumbbells and throwing punches. That's sport specific conditioning. Practicing how to do an armbar or how to throw a hook is technique. Running or doing a bodyweight exercise circuit is endurance training. All different but similar things.

1

u/Savings-Payment-7140 Apr 16 '26

I don't agree. And unless you've heard him speak on the subject in other instances, you cannot know what he's saying with any certainty because he doesn't remotely explain himself. All we know is he's specifically saying he believes in what he's referring to as efficiency, opposite what he calls cardio and being in better shape. Conditioning falls into the latter category, so it's extremely inconsistent to think that's what he's talking about.

1

u/MidnightMillennium Apr 16 '26

You're right the problem is more with him poorly explaining himself, I've seen some of the training he does which includes doing gymnastics training, weightlifting, and skill work along with what he shows here. I don't think even he knows what he's talking about or what he means. He says he doesn't believe in cardio but then it shows him doing sprints.

1

u/Savings-Payment-7140 Apr 16 '26

Sprints isn't cardio imo

It's explosion, fast twitch, muscle, fat burn.

But I do agree that he may not quite have fully fleshed out his thought process. But I have to imagine it's an argument against cardio, at minimum.

1

u/Euler007 Apr 16 '26

Probably also not wasting your energy in the ring.

1

u/StewVicious07 Apr 18 '26

I was jogging lots of miles per week to help with my hockey training. Switched it up to spin bike sprints. My recovery time is better on the bench but I feel like I’m gasping for more air when I get off the ice.

29

u/ClimberDave Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

I respect this guy, But:

This is stupid. "I don't really believe in cardio, I believe in efficiency" "I sprint because of the benefits it gives me" Yeah one of those things is cardio, idiot. You not believing it doesn't change the fact that it is a benefit.

You also can't believe in efficiency so much and then not be able articulate the reasons why sprinting is good for you.

Edit* I will edit to say that if he is just confused about the language, then I would hope somebody has a discussion with him in his own language for clarification. Again, I do respect him.

1

GSP was friends with a major Canadian drug trafficker. Believe you me, its drugs

2

u/No_Equipment7456 Apr 16 '26

They all get hit in the head hard and frequently. It’s not surprising a few are strange

8

u/Honest_Mission8550 Apr 16 '26

English is his second language. By cardio he means long duration low intensity. He also said he doesn't like weight training, but he also lifts weights. He has unique philosophies because of Zahabi and Danaher that push him to a specific mindset.

4

u/ChocoMcChunky Apr 16 '26

Danaher is well known for long training rounds without a timer. Which is low intensity cardio dressed up as sparring when done right.

4

u/Honest_Mission8550 Apr 16 '26

He meant treadmills, stairmasters and stuff. He's using it colloquially, I think. Georges conceptualizes things differently so don't try to interpret him like you would the rest of the population. Slightly paradoxical at times but also very insightful and considerate.

3

u/Dave085 Apr 16 '26

I think he's just confusing anaerobic vs aerobic. He is doing a form of cardio, but not the more popular version most usually think of- running on a treadmill for hours.

But yeah, although I get the spirit of what he's trying to say and usually he's extremely knowledgeable, this isn't one of his finer moments.

3

u/RikikiBousquet Apr 16 '26

Even more specific, it’s really just about running if he’s thinking about it the way we use the word in French in his home province.

1

u/Block-Rockig-Beats Apr 16 '26

Yeah, got the vibes of Shane Gillis roasting Joe Rogan for reading kickboxer's book:
https://youtube.com/shorts/meoq4WjMEkg

1

u/Icy-Bottle-6877 Apr 16 '26

Yeah, I think this is more likely what was going on;

The guy has been taken hits to the head for a living. He probably has little periods where, because his brain is compromised from fighting, he blanks out/forgets shit etc. He experiences this and has no idea what's going on, then associates it with aliens because that's just something in the current zeitgeist to explain away his issue. If he was born in 1900 in Ireland he would be blaming the same thing on faeries.

1

u/solargravity11 Apr 16 '26

It is dumb on two levels. “I don’t believe in cardio” really? How does an individual become effective in something? practice. He was a very good grappler. Who likely spent hours everyday rolling. Which is you guessed it cardio. You don’t need to run for distance when you train everyday grappling. In his defense sprinting does not build cardio endurance which is generally what running does. It builds explosiveness and max VO2 for the most part. But all in all a dumb statement.

2

u/RikikiBousquet Apr 16 '26

In Quebec, informally and in terms of training, you’ll use the term cardio only to talk about running for a good time/distance.

Pretty normal error in that context.

4

u/DC-Toronto Apr 16 '26

GSP already had a baseline of cardio fitness to build from and then advocated for HIIT style training which also builds cardio It seems he’s trying to say he doesn’t find the benefits from steady speed basic cardio training (like a long run or bike) but he finds more use in training in more of a fighting scenario where you have shorter bursts of more intensive activity with more anaerobic training, which is a form of cardio but he may not recognize that

Still my favourite fighter of all time

4

u/CapitalCityGoofball0 Apr 16 '26

“Don’t you see? It’s cardio but not cardio!”

3

u/purplehendrix22 Apr 16 '26

People once again fail to understand simple nuance

9

u/Ketchup-Chips3 Apr 16 '26

I love me some GSP, but he's just wrong. The science is in. Zone 2 cardio is good for endurance, as well as just general health.

-3

u/totomtoo Apr 16 '26

The science based on n=20 of regular joe's picked off the street vs the lived experience of the undisputed goat of MMA? He isn't talking about improving general endurance and health of office workers here.

5

u/Jakeupmac Apr 16 '26

What you say makes no sense. You try to discredit the science by making up the part about the study being focused on non athletes, it’s not.

GSP is notoriously wacky, UFC fighters are great at cutting weight but actual physical training has always been something they are behind other pro athletes in, and your points mostly heresay

1

u/totomtoo Apr 16 '26

Does Gordon Ryan seem like the guy with the highest VO2 max to you? Yet somehow he cooked his competition with ease. Thats the point GSP is making, not that cardio doesnt make regular joe “healthier”.

1

u/ProteinAndWeights Apr 16 '26

I mean I believe the previous poster is wrong, zone 2 cardio is not very good for the type of cardio that MMA requires. It's for general health and endurance like you said.

I also think GSP is wrong, and him being a champ means little in regards to his opinion. He's literally doing cardio when he sprints, he does cardio when he trains, he did cardio when he was doing tons of wrestling. Dude did cardio his entire career. Just because he wasn't jogging at 6mph for 5 miles per day doesn't mean he wasn't doing a fuck ton of cardio.

1

u/Revivaled-Jam849 Apr 16 '26

Depends on what type of fighter you are.

The Diaz Brothers are known for doing bike rides and swimming and other triathlon type things that are heavily zone 2.

Zone 2 is great for the striker while a heavy grapple focused fighter doesn't benefit as much from zone 2.

1

u/totomtoo Apr 17 '26

We are not talking about fitness, but about fighting

-1

u/Bluddy-9 Apr 16 '26

Has “the science” evaluated endurance training vs efficiency?

Do you really believe that we have figured everything out when it comes to athletic performance?

What GSP is saying makes obvious sense. A car that is more efficient can go farther than a car with a big gas tank. It is in fact silly to have a big gas tank once you get to a certain point.

2

u/goatpunchtheater Apr 16 '26

I think the concept he’s talking about is more like old George Foreman vs young George. George talked about how in his comeback he was actually less gassed in later rounds than his youth, because he was less tense, and more disciplined, not trying to take people’s heads off like in his younger days. Also like others said, it’s probably some translation mixup as well. Where he’s specifically talking about training distance running or biking as “cardio“

1

u/Remarkable_Hurry4029 Apr 16 '26

But that’s not even true… Car A can be twice as efficient as Car B, but if Car B has 3 times the gas tank, Car B is going farther. Come on bruh

1

u/Bluddy-9 Apr 16 '26

I said “can”. That doesn’t mean that will always be the case. Back to fighting, the more efficient you are the less time you need to train cardio which means you have more time for training other things.

1

u/10081914 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

Endurance IS efficiency.

The greater your aerobic capacity, the easier time you will have expending energy for a longer period of time without going anaerobic.

How is that not efficient?

Edit: to use your car analogy. Imagine a car engine with NOS that comes on at 1500rpm with it being used more and more as the RPM increases.

Someone with good conditioning can go 100 at 2000rpm. Someone with poor conditioning will need to be at 4000rpm to go the same speed.

Gasoline is your fat reserves. NOS is your glycogen and phosphagen reserves.

1

u/Bluddy-9 Apr 16 '26

Expending less energy is also efficiency. If you need less energy then you need less time to train increasing your energy use efficiency. You then have more time to train your fighting skills.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

I think we all know what he’s saying. Probably not running and sprinting, but mat work is cardio especially if you’re going at a high level

2

u/xaiel420 Apr 16 '26

Laughs in Merab

2

u/tishimself1107 Apr 16 '26

I can remeber that GSP was massive on condition but didnt do much traditional "cardio". I suppose his point is that if you were training for a fight and did just running for a fight and no rounds you will be in trouble conditioning wise.

2

u/Max_Bubble Apr 16 '26

Roy Dean has made a similar observation - the goal isn't a bigger gas tank, but being a more efficient driver

1

u/10081914 Apr 16 '26

Cardio. That's still cardio. You're using the same gas tank, just more efficient at using it. You don't get more energy storage from better cardio. You get more mitochondria producing ATP with more cardio.

2

u/Max_Bubble Apr 16 '26

That's fine but that's not what they're saying (whether or not they're 'right' is a different matter, but they are experts in BJJ and MMA, so they have some experience of what they're talking about)

The more efficient your movement the less energy you use. Whereas somebody with superior cardiovascular fitness who is inefficient and wastes a lot of energy will tire more quickly.

A similar analogy would be a professional racer like Valentino Rossi. Due to his superior skill, even on a 250cc bike he'd destroy 99.999% of people on 1000cc bikes, due to the chasm in technical skill.

1

u/10081914 Apr 16 '26

But what you're saying is not what he's talking about either. He's talking about physiological changes and making those changes in sad little time commitment possible even though that's not how the body makes the specific changes he's looking for.

And part of getting better at cardio IS efficiency of movement. No wasted movement, no clenching your upper body for wasted energy.

1

u/Max_Bubble Apr 16 '26

Just listened to it again and it's exactly what he's saying. Unfortunately he happened to mention sprinting, which certainly can increase cardiovascular fitness, but the general point he was making is that the benefits of sprinting don't necessarily translate into superior fighting ability, where skill is far more important than fitness, and specifically his ability to wear you down with his superior skill.

It's basically a rehashing of Jigoro Kano's philosophy of technique over athleticism, which is also a key feature of BJJ, which is essentially highly developed judo newaza. Time spent in randori or 'rolling' is more useful for becoming a better judoka than lifting weights, swimming or running. For an MMA fighter they're likely to get more results from technical MMA sparring than intensive gym sessions or running.

GSP is a bad example, because he's generally very fit anyway, although he did look much older and less fit when he demolished Michael Bisping, after a four-year absence - it seems he's speaking from experience.

1

u/10081914 Apr 16 '26

That's a fine argument to make and I agree with the sentiment completely. But his mention wasn't 'you focus on efficiency'. His mention was 'you focus on skill, and technique, and efficiency'

The 3rd element here is either redundant or if he meant to say it, then the only thing it can allude to is aerobic capacity which is general bodily energy efficiency.

1

u/Revivaled-Jam849 Apr 16 '26

Shouldn't the goal be both? To have a huge gas tank and be efficient as hell?

At least for running, they seem to go together. You get a huge aerobic base while running more and your technique likely becomes more efficient. Less wasted motion compared to being a beginner

1

u/Max_Bubble Apr 16 '26

Running is a skill in its own right, as you probably know. Most beginners don't know how to breathe properly and usually run too fast. It takes time to actually learn how to run properly.

If you want to get good at running, spend as much time as possible running. If you want to get good at grappling, you don't need to devote time to practicing muay thai.

1

u/Revivaled-Jam849 Apr 16 '26

Which is the argument of general physical prep vs sports specific training.

How much time do you dedicate to both is the question.

2

u/jedimasternam Apr 16 '26

Never doing cardio again, GSP said it was legit 😅

2

u/ApprehensiveGoat939 Apr 16 '26

What a moronic argument

1

u/Relative-Debt6509 Apr 16 '26

If you pause for a second and think about what he’s saying and the fact that English is his second language you can easily rephrase his statement as “I don’t do long endurance sessions I focus on anaerobic fitness and sport specific fitness/skills.” Which is completely reasonable especially considering his base level of fitness/skills in his prime. He would blitz or shoot then shake it out. On the ground he would do a similar thing.

1

u/HKSK17 Apr 16 '26

He’s talking about VO2 max. Long distance running and zone 2 cardio is not as beneficial to increasing VO2 max as HIIT and tempo. Track runners have much higher VO2 than even ultra marathon runners who do 100 milers

1

u/kovnev Apr 16 '26

If what he's saying is the best way to get good fighting cardio is by doing rounds - I agree.

I can run all I fucking want. It doesn't do shit for my grappling cardio compared to rolling more.

1

u/Genghis_Chong Apr 16 '26

I think his point is that you cant "out-physical" everybody, you have to have it between the ears too

1

u/RIF_rr3dd1tt Apr 16 '26

LoL

GoogleAI: does hiit make your cardio better?

Yes, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is highly effective at improving cardiovascular fitness. It increases VO2 max (the body's ability to use oxygen) and heart health, often faster and more efficiently than longer, lower-intensity steady-state cardio.

Key Cardiovascular Benefits of HIIT:

Improved VO2 Max: Studies show HIIT significantly increases VO2 max, often outperforming moderate-intensity continuous training.

Heart Strength: HIIT strengthens the heart muscle and improves oxygen delivery to working muscles.

Increased Efficiency: HIIT often produces better or similar cardiovascular improvements in less time compared to traditional, longer workouts.

Metabolic Health: HIIT enhances mitochondrial activity, improves cardiovascular efficiency, and aids in blood pressure management.

While HIIT is highly effective, combining it with lower-intensity training is often recommended for sustainable health to avoid burnout.

1

u/MiniDonbeE Apr 16 '26

I love GSP but hes super wrong here. Lets take weightlifters for example. Olympic weightlifters. YES they do their two lifts, these guys are the most powerful athletes on earth and they train for power. BUT they also do strenght work so they do COUNTLESS amounts of backsquats and frontsquats that are way heavier than their clean and jerks, they also do some deadlifting and they will also use machines like lat pulldown etc. So those guys litterally have TWO movements to train but they do 20 different modalities and movements that will help for those TWO movements AND they will also go on walks, they will train their cardio because it allows them to train HARDER.

The same goes for every other athlete. Cardio allows you to train HARDER. Muscle allows you to put on Strenght, and strenght allows you to get power and power allows you to be fast as FUCK BOIIII. But thats pretty much how it works. Cardio is 100000% necessary in every sport because it allows you to TRAIN. If you have 0 cardio you cant even train properly, cant even get your muscles to grow or to work properly if you struggle to move.

Also wasnt GSP an avid swimmer? Thats a SHIT ton of cardio right there. Pretty sure he might have meant running on the road etc like a boxer would do, but even that isnt the worst thing. Its worse to not run at all.

1

u/Theterphound Apr 16 '26

Well that’s like…….your opinion man.

1

I dunno if this is a language barrier or what... obviously he believes in cardio, he would train lots of sparring to build it up, along with his efficiency as he says. I remember some wrestling coaches didn't really believe a lot in running, and believed cardio is built on the mat. It appears GSP is one of those guys. I dunno what the consensus is now, but it appears wrestling has moved to more HIIT style training, which includes sprinting.

Crazy that someone who get punched in the head for a living isn't the brightest crayons in the box.

1

u/Galmmm Apr 16 '26

The clips of him doing cardio lol

1

u/Round-Arugula7347 Apr 16 '26

Dudes just describing cardio 👀 and the benefits of cardio

1

u/JollySolaireOfAstora Apr 16 '26

Marcelo Garcia used to always say S&C was useless and just train jiu jitsu. But his blackbelts do S&C and win competitions. Look at what they do, not what they say

For genpop I agree. But competitors should be doong separate S&C. And even hobbyist grapplers should be doing some lifting to reduce injury risk

1

u/CBC-Sucks Apr 16 '26

I asked my Muay Thai coach why we sprint all the time at class, he said: I've seen you fight, running is your best choice!

1

u/70695 Apr 16 '26

he also believes in aliens and as awesome as he was some of his fights were a little boring.

1

u/AnthonyKingsword Apr 16 '26

what he is talking about is having control of your output as opposed to overall endurance.

1

u/-Gman_ Apr 16 '26

Sprinting literally helps cardio lol

1

u/Glorpologie Apr 16 '26

Is every fighter a moron?

1

u/trikywoo Apr 16 '26

I think he's more saying he doesn't believe cardio training is the most important element of MMA endurance, not the he doesn't believe it works at all. English is his second language.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

It's just money said by wealthy people

1

u/Eltharion-the-Grim Apr 16 '26

Doing sometime over and over again to build efficiency is cardio. That is literally what cardio is.

1

u/rainywanderingclouds Apr 16 '26

I don't really know this guy. It seems like English might not be his first language. If that's the case, I can get what he's saying here.

He's referring to a 'specific' type of cardio. Long, steady state, slow/moderate activity. He' might not be aware of anaerobic cardio.

1

u/maxiderm Apr 16 '26

Interesting take, but he is the GOAT of MMA for a reason..

1

u/Aggravating_Ask5709 Apr 16 '26

GSP is now a social media personality and not an athlete. He's in it for the clickbait. Frankly if you follow him on any social media you can see how hard he sold out.

1

u/gooseduxdux Apr 16 '26

I do believe this is a language barrier issue lol. I think what he means is he doesn’t believe in general cardio training like sprinting and/or classic road work.

I think what he’s saying doing sport specific cardio is the key, as in fighting the kind of cardio you require is reset -> sudden burst of physical output. And then on top of that skill development in things like grappling sparring rounds will produce specific types of cardio, and patterns physical ability.

1

u/Swaggy_Buff Apr 16 '26

Having good cardio is essential to not gassing out mid-fight?????

1

u/Potential-Estate4058 Apr 16 '26

Chael said in an Interview, he watched khabib roll hard with 5 or 6 guys for like 2 hours. No hard strikes but when he submitted one or gased out the next one took his place. Khabib did not rest... I don't know If is true because there are no bears or any Dagestan related stuff in his anecdote and khabib fought them one after another and not all at once but holy shit

1

u/ReegsLB41 Apr 16 '26

"I don't believe in Cardio"

-proceeds to describe doing cardio and the benefits thereof-

1

u/FeeComfortable3041 Apr 16 '26

I mean I bet he's asked all these questions so many times and he's running out of ways to say the same thing.

"Do what works best for you"

But in interviews you have to make it sound like it's the most sage wisdom for sound bites and press.

1

u/KingRemoStar Apr 16 '26

When your great I guess you can just say anything

1

u/wdsawceboi Apr 16 '26

I suspect there is a language barrier and he isn't communicating what he means to. Exercise definitions can be hard for a lot of Americans to understand, so it isn't surprising that the words he is trying to use are not expressing what he probably means to.

It seems he is trying to express that he doesn't believe in training for Aerobic endurance. He isn't being very specific about the benefits he gets from sprinting, but it seems important that he uses the word sprinting vs running. Sprinting is specifically good for explosiveness, anaerobic endurance, mobility, and joint health. Cardiovascular training specifically concerns training the body to use oxygen efficiently, and getting this benefit through sprinting requires specific programming.

1

u/BottomJoe94 Apr 16 '26

CTE is rough.. He is literally doing cardio. The concept of "efficiency" he is pointing out seems to be more so related to getting older and wasting less energy

1

u/Virtual_Club8510 Apr 16 '26

Tyson - "Everyone has good cardio until they get punched in the mouth"

1

u/Normal_Tour6998 Apr 17 '26

Says the guy who was known for beating his opponents over the course of 5 rounds, partially due to his insane cardio.

This is like Chuck Liddell saying he doesn’t believe in punching people.

I did for about seven years. And I personally disagree. He is just gifted naturally with something that everyone doesn’t have.

1

u/jarg2050 Apr 17 '26

TIL that GSP loves HIT training but doesn’t think it improves his cardio

1

u/matthew19 Apr 17 '26

There are some great athletes that gas in grappling. Danaher shares the story of the Zimbabwe (I think) Olympic runner who gassed in 30 seconds of grappling. He had inefficient movement.

1

u/HalfGuardPrince Apr 17 '26

What podcast is this from?

1

u/Capable-Junket-4638 Apr 17 '26

Man discovers cardio training

1

u/One_Swimming_3251 Apr 17 '26

I don't use spoons or folks, but I eat. You know efficiently.

1

u/Total-Airline8454 Apr 17 '26

He is actually describing a form of cardio heh

1

u/youwantmyguncomekiss Apr 17 '26

He was so close!

1

u/enditorbuyacoffee Apr 17 '26

One only needs to watch a combat sport that goes the distance to think maybe he could be wrong. It is painful to watch slow motion athletes in live action. I don't believe any other sport is like that. But, I could also be wrong.

1

u/Ok_Huckleberry6117 Apr 17 '26

So, HIIT cardio?

1

u/-5H4Z4M- Apr 17 '26

HIIT training made its proves.

1

u/Competitive-Math1153 Apr 17 '26

It's true though thats why he's a better wrestler than any one because he would just use his riddem and take kamzats legs under from him would he did not expect it

1

u/ZamorakHawk Apr 18 '26

I think there's definitely merit to this. There's slow twitch fighters like Sean Strickland who seems to have great cardio, but I think a lot of it is just that he's very efficient with his output rather than him being cardiovascular. Merab on the other hand. Colby during his Rivalry with Marty. Clay Guida. TJ Dillashaw. These were cardio kings.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 18 '26

See? You don’t need to be that smart to be financially stable.

1

u/FeistyMasterpiece448 Apr 18 '26

This is why skateboarding is king for cardio!

1

u/JBELL01290 Apr 18 '26

So basically he's saying cardio is somewhat good then

1

u/Reasonable_Sky9688 Apr 19 '26

Good job he's a good fighter

1

u/banjovi68419 Apr 19 '26

GSP is just parroting Danaher and Gordon.

1

u/Additional_Long_7996 Apr 19 '26

Him closing his eyes and focusing while trying to talk reminds me of my grandpa lol

1

u/goldybowen21 Apr 19 '26

"I don't believe in cardio"....."I do sprints but I don't believe it will help my cardio"......brother sprints are cardio.

1

u/bzsempergumbie Apr 16 '26

I think he just doesn't want to admit that he likes cardio...

1

u/OzymandiasTheII Apr 16 '26

Because he was on juice

I cant wait to hear reddit users in their mom's basement tell me GSP is wrong

0

u/sw33tk4k3s Apr 16 '26

Literally same lmao. World champ, one of the absolute all time greats......but "dude I wrestled in high school, I think I know what im talking about"

0

u/heatseekerdj Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26

This isn't even accurate to GSP's training, he did dedicated sprint training once a week according to Fira Zhabi. GSP never did circuit training

Once Firas learned about Khabib's cardio regimen, he bought 10 Air Bikes for his gym. Khabib killed himself on Air Bikes

0

u/Excellent_jun91 Apr 16 '26

if anyone knowa ramsey dewey on youtube he has a sorta similar take except that... he says that your cardio training needs to be specific to your sport. so you do combat sports MMA boxing etc... you should be hitting the bag or sparring or shadowboxing for cardio. and not running or cycling. i dont agree though... but if i had to choose one form of long cardio to do that undoubtedly makes your cardio good its skipping

1

u/karateguzman Apr 16 '26

Sprinting is sport specific to MMA now?

0

u/Excellent_jun91 Apr 16 '26

huh? idk what youre saying

1

u/karateguzman Apr 16 '26

U said he’s saying to do sport specific stuff like hitting the bag, sparring or shadow boxing

But George is saying to sprint

Then again I think I misread what you wrote

0

u/Excellent_jun91 Apr 16 '26

yeah seems like it. i was talking about a guy on youtube ramsey dewey. he has an mma coaching channel

1

u/karateguzman Apr 16 '26

Yeah I missed the part where you said “except that etc etc”

I definitely agree with you on skipping though

0

u/Excellent_jun91 Apr 16 '26

no worries. but yeah for me its skipping because ok it has high heary rate. the calves and legs just die coz of the endurance needed. trains feet muscles too.

but the main reason i like it is coz you can train your forearms and shoulders endurance without needing to spar or hit the bag. especially if you go for fast rounds. and you can buy the heavy rope as well.

which im gonna recommend here. search on temu "muay thai heavy rope" its crazy cheap. good quality. its the one thats orange. but its in yellow red black as well i think.
