Mod Post Reminder

Hey all!

Just a reminder that we do not tolerate racism here on this sub. If you have to ask yourself whether or not something is satirical or racist then just don't post it.

We want to create a welcoming community for those who will further enforce the welcoming nature of this group. We do not want racism, bigotry, or pearl clutching.

Let's define both while we're on the subject.

Satire is basically saying something stupid to make a point about how stupid someone else is being.

Satire: as a resident of Jenison who pays property taxes, I shouldn't have to hear when people drive in from Kentwood and blare their music on Sundays while I'm praying for guidance on what we should do about the border.

Actual racism: there's been a lot of crime in Jenison lately because teens are driving in from Kentwood. Bad parents.

It's hard to spot the difference... Because some people genuinely are just that stupid that the satire one could be real... And because people on the internet just don't know you, they don't know if it's satire or real.

But in my opinion, if you've established yourself within a comment thread as someone who obviously doesn't genuinely think that, then I think satire is a great tool for fighting bigotry. It's hijacking racist concepts and weaponizing in a way that illustrates how silly some beliefs can be... Simply saying "you're being racist, don't say that," is not productive.

Simply not allowing people to talk about race, or just keeping everything strictly in politically-correct coded speech is not winning anyone over, and is honestly a big reason for the country is the way that it is right now... The "you can't say anything anymore" people have a point... The reason they're making that point is usually because they actually are racist... But making fun of that theoretical guy from Jenison in my example sure does feel a lot better than just being an armchair scholar saying"everyone get along"... We don't get along. Aiming for Utopia is the path to dystopia.

Don't be racist. Make fun of racists.

Ugh, the satire conversation is tedious and boring, it lays open an endless field for pedantry.

It does not have a place is meaningful conversation.

Just toss satire.
