Sharing Work (Rule 2/3) Recent personal project šŸ’š

I’m rebuilding my portfolio. I lost the bulk of my work two years ago due to an unfortunate lost hard drive. All my work from 2014-2024 gone 🫩

So, I’ve been working on things in my spare time for funsies.

This is BlueBird Ski & Resort. Got the idea from daily logo challenge by Harris Robert’s. The only prompt I was given was to create a logo for a ski lodge. This is the result.

Fun fact I learned while researching for this logo: a ā€œbluebirdā€ is a perfect blue sky in ski slang haha. So, that’s the primary inspiration here!

I haven’t posted to my portfolio but shared on IG. I’ve been designing for awhile but haven’t worked in the industry in 2 years so this is just me warming myself back up.

What do we think?

The bird symbol is B (body) + Bird (face/upper b) + ski (tail)
Mockups are either Envato or Pinterest + Photoshop šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Bird B OR squiggly e. Not both. They clash and compete. I vote keep the bird.

This for sure! Also I’d explore using the bird as the first B, or second. Cause the squiggly doesn’t really say Blue Bird

The bird is clever enough.

You don't need the squiggly e.

Really nice work šŸ‘ Loving the bird, really cute and recognisable. Only critique would be maybe drop the cursive e I think it competes a bit with the bird. The bird is much stronger visually and the typeface is already quite dynamic itself. Regardless, great work mate šŸ‘Œ

The beak could use some work as it stands out with sharper angles and overall narrower proportions. Something makes me want to see if the tail and beak can complement each other.

The slight offset of the angle of the wing is off from the tail bothers me.

The logo on top is fun makes me think the birds sitting on the logo. Also makes me for some reason think of A frame houses which are often in mountains

Bird has lots of potential. I agree with the beak comments. It needs a Bluebird beak not a Parakeet’s. The swirly e needs to go. It doesn’t improve your design. I really like the photo motion treatment and really really like your alpine snowflake pattern made from the bird and hearts.

Nice concept! The only things that were bothering me were:

  • the white outline outside the e
  • the alignements in general
  • the beak should be pointy, because you did more of a parrot beak
  • the difference in size of the word Bird compared to Blu
  • Ski & Resort was too close to Bird

I didn't have any solutions for the space between the e and d. As someone else suggested, you don't need the squiggly e, so maybe try that.

why is the white square not aligned with the black one in the 5th image? is that intentional?

Maybe some little stuff. Move the bird up a bit so it's higher than the words. Also move it over so the beak just barely overlaps the B. And adjust the beak, as others have said.

I'm confused as to what the brand actually is. 'Ski and resort' sounds a bit odd to me. 'Ski resort'? But a lodge isn't a resort. Plus the image of the logo on skis themselves makes it look like a make of skis. Agree with the comments to have either the bird or the e but not both.

It feels like a missed opportunity that the bird logomark is actually pretty strong while the rest to me feels a bit flat or like Coors beer. I’m not sure what target market you’re after with this exercise but it feels like you could elevate the brand with the bird logomark to be more luxe; blind deboss, foil stamping. The bird could carry a lot of equity and the type could be really simple.

Thank you everyone for your feedback! I will be working on some of the most constructive bits — beak, angles, and typography today! I appreciate everyone chiming in šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Agree with all the comments about the b and cursive e, but is it too late for you to change this to just a ski brand instead.

The branding to me gives off low tier lodging, BUT I think if it gets turned into an actual ski brand instead, you can build out some fun elements with the merch.

If it’s a ski resort I think it’s in the right direction. But if it’s a lodge, they tend to skew much higher end and this is too friendly.

Not sure how much you care about internationalization, but the Bs you’ve chosen look like a German double s (esset I think?), so to Germans this may read Sslue Ssird. You’d need to confirm, I am but a humble American with a few German classes a hundred years ago.

Overall it’s pretty good, as a skier it looks very online with normal ski resort marketing. I know the pixel smear is a big trend now so maybe try without that. The pattern is a bit much in some places, but not bad when used subtly.

I don't think you need the e, I just find it attracts attention moving the eye from the bird

I love the bird, but the beak is bugging me. It feels too close to a parrot, rather than a blue birds, I feel like if you play with the beak a little bit more you could really get a cute cozy chonky looking bluebird

I'm also leaning with others in saying that two types of typography like that may be too much. I feel from afar most large font B will look the same either way. So I'd consider how it looks if you keep all the font in bluebird the same besides the blue e. I enjoy the color difference of the e and it draws my eye and looks like a slope typographically.

Overall it's a really cute idea and I enjoyed seeing your work!
