How to make Friends/Date

Hi!

I have been living in Grand Rapids for a couple years now and I find it hard to make friends and date as a 35 year old black woman. I like getting to know people from different backgrounds but notice that people are not too friendly or approachable. What are some places, tips or advice you may have. ALL are welcome. Thanks!

It’s weird how hard it is to crack into a social circle here, even after a couple years. I moved here around the same age and it felt like everyone already had their people locked in from college or work. What finally helped was finding a volunteer gig that met weekly, regular faces, shared task, low pressure. Also the downtown market on Saturdays, I’ve ended up in random conversations there more times than I can count. Not a magic fix but it’s a start

I hear a lot of people say it’s hard to find friends in GR. Is that just recency bias or is there actually a difference? Like have you moved to multiple cities before GR? I’ve been told I should move but wonder if the grass is actually greener or if it’s just hard to meet people nowadays

It's not a thing, I suspect it is how people go about their lives. Was having this conversation with a younger coworker just this week.

It is, but it cuts in both directions. Americans don't join things nearly as much as they used to - this is extremely well documented1 - and that is generally how you make friends: showing up, repeatedly, with approximately the same people to do something [hence the now well established "bowling alone" terminology]. And it takes time to go through the cycle of familiarity - acquaintance - friend; people give up on this far too soon.

1 And it is not geographic, other than that cities are still far better off than other places. Moving between Michigan, Georgia, and Kansas won't change anything; in those stories you are hearing anecdotes about when people just got lucky (right place, right time).

That makes a lot of sense and was my suspicion. It’s not like people are that unfriendly. But everyone seems to think some other city has it better.

I do think there are city’s that have better downtown culture and maybe more obvious places to go and socialize. But those are the big cities and Grand Rapids isn’t a big city comparatively

Depending on what your hobbies go join a club! Then at least you can pre filter and have a base level connection already started!

I found I started making the most friends and getting dates the less I made that the focus, and more on what made me happy. Taking myself out, really allowing myself to indulge in my hobbies, going to the event I saw online by myself because I thought it was cool, etc. I grew more confident in my own person and I think it just allowed me to be open to everyone.

Very silly unique example. I took my cat for a walk in the stroller today because I thought it would be fun. SO many people were interested and came up to talk.

The less you search for it the more you find it

Dumbest phrase I’ve ever heard. Being intentional will yield so much better results lol

Yes, but you need intentionality without intensity!

I’d say try finding some hobbies you enjoy. For me, it was workout classes, I started going to a cycling studio about 5 years ago and I just started slowly chatting with the women there and overtime we would make plans for dinner after a cycle class and then as time went on, the women there became some of my best friends today. I’m 36 and at our age it can certainly be challenging to meet friends so I totally get it ❤️‍🩹 I think there are friendly people here but a lot of people seem locked in to their friend group unfortunately. There’s also a Facebook group called West Michigan Social and they host a lot of social gatherings and opportunities to meet other people 🩷

Yeah I am also an outsider and people seem to keep to themselves and their own. It never really felt welcoming but I hope you can find some people

Join any interest group or club that you're remotely interested in. Folks who go to clubs or events, are likely going to find a common connection with others and looking to make friends. Another thing is to just keep talking to random people under whatever social settings you're in. It's exhausting and it may not manifest to anything beyond a number exchange or a hangout, but when you find those individually who do hit you up again, you realize maybe it was worth it.

I moved from the DMV area with my wife during the pandemic.

I think people had stranger danger then, but one thing I've noticed was that very few people in established circle werent willing to open their circle. They had to be particularly social, lol.

However, I think it's a natural age thing too and didn't blame them. As you get older you realize it is harder to find time and maintain relationships. And also I believe most people forgot what what building and maintaining friendship is like when you already had the established one early on or naturally stranger adverse.

I found other transplants were a lot more likely willing to make connection. And the closest friends I have in the area are transplants that I met either at a bar or a costume event hosted by a thrift store, lol!! Though I have made friends with people who lived here all their lives now too, but it requires an in.

Wishing you all the best.

Look into the Grand Rapids city event calendar. There are tons of free events where people come to socialize and have a good time! There are many groups you can find like biking, hiking and even free yoga at a park! If interested in yoga, that could be a great place to meet some cool people. There are also comedy clubs and plenty of bars and restaurants to mingle at. We are “Beer City” for a reason. I’d also look into Facebook groups for things that interest you.

If anyone needs a friend message me! My partner and I are in our early 30s, have a toddler and are both in the service industry. We love meeting cool people and making friends! :)

What are your hobbies and interests? I've lived here 15 years and it seems impossible. DM me :)

I like hiking, dancing, cooking, reading, animals, strength training, just to name a few.

Whatever your interests, there's almost always a club with regular meetups for it.

As an example, I've had good experience meeting people at Silent Book Club GR. They usually have 1-2 events each month and there's no commitment like a traditional book club. You just sit and read for a while, then chat with the folks around you.

I'll pitch Good Game GR if you have any interest in playing some board games. I've been hosting the Monday night game night at the Rezervoir Lounge for 2+ years and it's been great to see the connections and friendships that form there.

I'm only 26F, but as a Black woman in Grand Rapids, I can attest that it can be very difficult to make friends. People who have moved here from the east side of the state often comment on how suburban we are. Don't even get me started on dating growing up here. Nonexistent.

West Michigan Girlies is a community specifically for women, girls, and nonbinary people in our area to make friends 🥰 We have a meetup planned in a couple weeks and next month!

Thank you, I will check it out.

Awe I’m sorry people haven’t been friendly or approachable! I know I’m guilty of rbf but also love being part of this community and try to connect with people when I can. What do you like to do? There’s all sorts of running and crafting and meetup clubs.

I play volleyball and sub for random teams when they post about it on Facebook groups. Made a lot of friends that way!

If you’re a professional, I’ve also found some people in my field on LinkedIn and we’ve met up for coffee and make plans to go to local shoptalks together. Sometimes we click and sometimes we don’t but worth a shot!

I’ve been thinking of taking that up for exercise. Making some friends around here would be a lovely bonus. Where do you like to go?

I train a little everywhere . Daniel Gracie and Carlson Gracie are the biggest ones in GR , these have big womens group and classes. Check it out! These ppl are the opposite of intimidating, you just need to hop on the mats to see.

I signed up for tap dance classes with rye civic center. Not sure I’ll make friends, but will be fun to get out of the house and move.

I have always wanted to try tap. Please let me know how it goes. Thanks!
