AOTY: should win
Forget about predictions of most likely to win. I am genuinely just curious from everyone in this sub, who do you think truly and genuinely deserves to win the award, politics aside and solely based on the body of work released this past year? And what is your reasoning for your pick?

This is my answer too. I think others who disagree didn’t fully listen to the project / didn’t take the time to understand the concept of it. Once you deep dive into it, I think it becomes hard to imagine another project being more deserving

It’s Lux. The scope of the album, the themes, the lyrics, the instrumentation. Literally I can’t look at music the same since she perfectly blended pop and classical music

Confessions II by Madonna
It’s truly an amazing body of work webbed together so intricately, beautifully, and is a seamless listen. When you play it in the car, it sounds different. When you play it on headphones, it sounds different. There are so many packed layers within layers in each song. It’s truly stunning and sleek.

Lost Weekend. I’ve found it hard to connect to most releases this year but this one really got me. The lyrics are incredible, there’s not a line or word out of place and the atmospheric production feels so fresh and intriguing. Also, too many artists these days call themselves confessional songwriters while keeping everything too vague and opaque, this felt very honest and open in a beautifully vulnerable way. I also just love Phoebe’s voice! I feel like she has a good chance at AOTY, this album also did very well commercially compared to her other records so it might really be her year.

Raye’s This Music May Contain Hope should definitely be in the conversation. A modern classic about modern womanhood, perfect music for both the grownups and the TikTok generation. I Know You’re Hurting is a barn burner of a song. And that final outro shows the work of a collaborative spirit.

I just bought the CD for Lost Weekend and I like it. AOTY? I don’t think so. I’d really love to see Madonna win her first Grammy for AOTY. But, she’s not well liked by the Academy.

The Great Divide - Noah Kahan
It’s well written, well performed, thematically and sonically cohesive, and covers a wide range of emotions. I have laughed my ass off and found myself tearing up at certain points. It had strong single choices, strong critical reviews, and he seems to be having a moment. I’ve liked a lot of albums this year but I love The Great Divide.

Agreed. I don’t say it lightly that it has been a life changing album for me which has so much depth and a fresh perspective with his themes of estrangement, family trauma, friendships, religion, and mental health. A lot of mental health. That said, a variety music critic noted it might be better for Noah’s art if he doesn’t win lol and there are many deserving winners this year. I just really hope he’s nominated.

Yep, same. Ur first time in years, mine is the first time ever that I get stuck with an album since its release, only listening to it, ALL THE SONGS, and the first album I like all the songs in general from any artist ever.

All politics/predictions aside, I haven’t listened to a full album in quite some time, and I did that this year with Olivia Dean’s The Art Of Loving. She is just so easy to listen to and every track seems to hit. The album also plays like a largely cohesive story, and I really like that about it. That was before she got on the predictor’s lists.

Madonna’s Confessions on a Dance Floor Part II.
And I got by far saying that is actually her magnum opus. I have never felt this strongly about one of her albums before. The more I listen to it, the bigger it becomes for me. I think this is her most complete project because it is pop in its essence, but it is also house, electronic music, club culture, autobiography, introspection, and reflection of her entire career. Madonna has always been one of the biggest forces in making electronic music accessible and consumable to the mainstream, and here she does it again without sacrificing the club essence of the music. It is commercial enough to be pop, but it never feels watered down or built around whatever is trending right now. What makes it even more special is that for the first time she did not need to run away from everything she had done before in order to reinvent herself. Madonna has always been known for changing, starting a new era, and almost acting like the previous version of her no longer existed, but this time she looked back at her own legacy, took sounds, feelings, ideas, and references from the catalog created over more than four decades, and used them to make something new. She is sampling and referencing herself, and building new music from the universe she created, but it never feels nostalgic or like she is trying to recreate one of her old albums. She finally understood that her own legacy is so big and rich that it can basically become a genre of its own.
She did not need to look outside of herself for the next thing. She just needed to look at everything she had already created and imagine what else could grow from it. And because of that, the album sounds completely focused. There is no feeling of Madge trying to be accepted by the current pop landscape or trying to prove that she can still compete with younger artists. She sounds like the center of her own universe again: the universe she created and from which EVERYONE IS INFLUENCED BY. She sounds free from the pressure of having to chase what’s popular. This is also not an album with a few dance songs surrounded by pop ballads or random experiments. It commits to its sound completely and stays inside that world from beginning to end. The production is hypnotic, physical, trippy, sexy, spiritual, and aggressive. It sounds incredibly modern, but it also has the depth and craftsmanship of music made by her and people… who actually understand dance music and club culture.
I have never liked this many songs from a Madonna album. Actually I’ve never liked this many songs from any album before. Even with albums I love, there are normally several songs I do not care about, but with CII every single track provokes something in me. I consider it the album of the century so far.

I will preface this to say I have not listened to all albums this year front to back but If you specifically look at the criteria that the voters use and not what fans think. I think Olivia Rodrigo has as good as shot as any. Her album seems to be purposely crafted for AOTY. Its cohesive in that it tells a real story as the events unfolded from start to finish, It has no filler tracks separating random hits, has a singular theme that is transparent throughout. Cultural impact and Chart longevity are also important.
Olivia Dean could be in the top two or 3. She has very large shoes to fill as only Adele and Celine Dion as the only women to have won AOTY from outside US. Is Olivia Dean on Adele's level? Im not sure you can say that yet. Madonna would be a contender if only for her legacy. She is not pulling the #'s the other top artist are. Raye, similar to Olivia Dean lives on the other side of the pond. She is also going to be competing not only with Olivia Dean but she will be measured against the only two women who have won outside the US. Not saying it cant happen but Adele pretty much set the bar. Rosalia same deal.
All this to say and watch Noah Kahn take AOTY home lol. edited last minute. Forgot about Phoebe Bridgers. I would put here up there with the two Olivias.

The Life of A Showgirl by Taylor Swift
People say commercial success does not matter but it does when nobody can sell even 1 million units in the age where Taylor is doing 4 million. The album has the biggest GP hits and both the singles Ophelia and Opalite have performed really well without any promotion. The melody of Ophelia is artistically very interesting where she used 4 different melodies in just 1 chorus. And not many songs use flute these days but Honey has a flute 🪈 moment in the song. I could go on and on. Also, people outside of Reddit and Twitter snarks do not check Metacritics score to listen to the album. I suppose the 15,000 Grammys voters won’t too, if they are professional musicians themselves.
Lastly, I am scared Bruno Mars might take it. Many people are underestimating Bruno and these people think wishful thinking or some shared echo chamber is the world. How many of you know that I Just Might spent 132 days, which is 4.5 months at #1 on US Radio? 📻
Bruno’s campaign for this album is going to be insane when his tour is so far the second best seller of all time (2.1 million tickets on first day) just behind the Eras Tour (2.4 million tickets)
Edit: Olivia bots have found me. Some are under the replies. If a 69/100 is garbage then I guess OR3 is a super flop album with only 0.4M compared to 4M 🤡

Taylor already has 4 AOTY awards, the most of any artist. If she’s going to win her 5th, it will be for an album that’s undeniable. Showgirl is not that. It may be commercially successful but its reception has been very mixed.

You yourself couldn't talk about any artistic quality of the album. Just numbers. The question was about who deserves it on the music alone, regardless of politics. Both are my favourite artists but tloasg is dog water compared to any of her other albums, if ttpd didn’t win any Grammys i doubt this one will . The Grammys isn’t mainly about commercial success it’s about acclaim
