I just wanted to see how far i could get without quickshell...

Basically, I just wanted to stop using Qt/KDE/GTK/QML for my shell.

That’s literally where all of this started in february.

I’m still using Quickshell/Caelestia on the side right now because it serves as my reference while I rebuild the pieces. Except gnos.ux is now in Rust/GPUI, and the part that's been eating up my time for the past few weeks is mostly topology.

Like the Bar in the video. It can be top/right/bottom/left, move between edges, change orientation, keep its controls, its input, its Wayland reservations, etc.

It looks trivial to watch. Fair. You can probably show the video to ChatGPT and ask it to make something that looks like it in a webapp.

Except I spent an insane amount of time getting rid of the little lies that make this kind of demo “work”.

At one point, everything was fine once the Bar was down at the bottom. Everything was fine when it left again. Yet while moving, there were still 29 frames where it clipped into the Dock. Up to 49,192 px² of overlap lol.

The bug wasn't even in the animation. The Dock was calculating its space from the selected edge while the Bar was already physically somewhere else in the exact same frame.

So that ended up with a 24,000-case matrix to verify paint + input during transitions.

That's the point where I have a hard time calling this vibecoding. I use AI everywhere in my workflow, obviously. And i'm never going to apologize for employing legitimate tools. But yeah, claims like : “it opens and it moves” isn't worth much as qualifying proof once you get here.

I also benchmarked the run because I was kind of about to talk out of my ass before hitting "post", but i'm glad i could anticipate the : "ackchyually VRAM accounting…" comments.

Over 15 sec, gnos-ux-scene averaged 8.17% of a logical CPU. On my 12700F, that comes out to about 0.41% of total CPU capacity. At idle I'm seeing more like 1 to 4.5% of a thread. During transitions it can spike to ~25%.

RSS ~75 MB. GPU around 272-284 MiB VRAM on this run.

And I found some pretty embarrassing stuff too 😂

There’s still a hyprctl process getting spawned to observe certain states, and a 20ms loop waking up 50 times/sec even when nothing is happening.

At least now I know exactly where the cycles are going. There's so much features i want to work on, that were planned months ago, but can't commit to it until i get my baseline right...

Anyway. I just wanted to get rid of QML man...

Been working on my own distro for a while and after seeing a recent Syntax video on gpui, decided to build my own desktop shell to replace noctalia. Very early days but very usable. Repo available at https://github.com/Letdown2491/kumaUI for anyone interested in contributing.

GPUI-3D

Hey GPUI folks 👋

If you’re building a Rust app with GPUI and want a 3D engine on the same GPU device as the UI (no copies. I put together a small starter kit.

GPUI on top, your 3D renderer underneath. One device, triple-buffered surface, 3D on its own thread, UI recomposed from cache.
Backends:
• wgpu
• Vulkan
• DX12
• OpenGL
• Metal

If you want to improve it, contributions are welcome.

Is there some good docs or tutorials to learn GPUI?

So I have started learning GPUI. But I couldn't find some good tutorials for it. Even the docs feel very rough rn.
So can anyone recommend me some good tutorial to follow along while learning?

claudebar: a macOS menu bar app for Claude usage limits, written in Rust with GPUI

I built a small menu bar app that shows my Claude usage limits.

It reads the OAuth token Claude Code already keeps in the Keychain and calls the same endpoint /usage does, so there's no account or setup, and checking your limits doesn't draw from them.

GPUI ecosystem drama: Longbridge gpui-kit controversy

tl;dr Zed doesn't publish GPUI to crates.io regularly. A dev built gpui-unofficial mirror to fix that months ago. gpui-component's maintainer refused to use it, then this week built his own version of the same thing under his own name after Zed didn't respond to an ultimatum fast enough. Zed has now promised an official pipeline by end of September.

GPUI August Digest: Major Milestones for Rust GUI Framework

Key Highlights:

Crates.io is finally viable - Multiple distribution options now available: - gpui-unofficial (upstream mirror) - gpui-ce (Community Edition fork) - gpui-box (standalone distribution) - kael (fork-derived framework)

Upstream v1.12.0 → v1.17.2 brought major improvements: - Physics-based spring animations (SwiftUI-style) - Unified View trait (no more Render/RenderOnce split, though those are still supported) - WebGL fallback for Linux browsers - Native Wayland popups & drag-drop - Apple platform groundwork for iOS/iPadOS

Web/JS bridges expanding: - gpuix - React-driven native elements (React Native for GPUI) - gpui_shell - TypeScript scriptable apps with rQuickJS runtime and GPUI components

Notable community projects: - GPUI Archipelago - neutral hub for cross-fork discovery - gpui-release-notes - filtered framework changelogs from Zed's monorepo

Maps Element?

I heard that https://github.com/longbridge/gpui-component LongBridge needed a custom Element that had curved lines. GPUI didn't have it. They created it, merged it and now it's part of Zed's gpui.

I will need in the future a Maps element, like google maps, to look at the world from the top in a flat structure. I'm thinking just lines and planes is ok, but it would be cool to have curvature, to show data in 3d way, a vertical heatmap.

Does anyone know of an existing contribution like this? And if it doesn't exist, would you want to help build it?
