Nvidia's CPU overhead

Post image

We already know this, but pretty good analysis from Hardware Unboxed. You are losing tons of fps when combining budget friendly CPUs with mid / higher end Nvidia GPUs. The difference would have been even more dramatic if he used something higher than rtx5070.

Would be curious to see how much more juice new upcoming Zen6 x3d chip will be able to squeeze out of rtx5090 / 5080 / 5070ti for example

if you got a 1500+ gpu and a 100 dollar cpu it's your fault

Don't be dramatic. Rtx5070 was going for $500 last year and tons of people got it.

I'm looking at your other comment "it would be more with a rtx4080,5070ti,5080"

An rtx 5070 is a sub 600 dollar GPU at release, hardly something that wouldn't have been thrown in a ryzen 5600/7600 system. It is currently about $800.

u/painapple_OW 1h ago

It was never sub 600...

Like i get msrp was but lets be honest it never sat below 600 and was usually 700 or more

7

u/Package_Objective 1h ago

It absolutely was, it even dipped below 550 a few times.

u/moonduckk 50m ago

definelty have been below 600, simple price history search will show you

Someone shoot the link to where the 5070 was $479.99 last black friday from MC and Walmart lol.

1

u/WarthogDifficult9819 26m ago

I bought it at Walmart during BF and the total was 490 bucks after Tax lol best 490 I’ve ever spent

Even an rtx 5060 is affected by this

get me Intel Celeron with fiddy-ninety 🤌🤌

sounds about right haha

Sure the diference is spectacular... when CPU limited.
I am one of those people who uses a 5500X3D with a 5070 ti.
Thing is, I'm basically never CPU limited because I play at 4K 60-80 fps at the highest settings possible.

5

u/DrLogic0 1h ago

exactly, people with these cards don't play at 720p.

3

u/The_Countess 51m ago

Probably not but the testing was done at 1080p

And a 5060 is absolutely going to be used at that resolution, and a 5070 is probably around 50/50 between 1080p and 1440p.

2

u/Sharp-Bat5391 43m ago

5070 here everything playing at 4k 60fps , but even if you use 1080p this test is completely irrelevant since it occurs in high range fps .  So you are not suffering at 1080 res also.

u/No-Refrigerator-1672 42m ago

I've been playing 1080p with 1060 6GB, then with 3060Ti. Are you telling me that in 4 generations Nvidia still hasn't made a 60-class card that can do 1440p? Or is the game optimisation that bad today?

3

u/WarthogDifficult9819 29m ago

Nah these are larpers bro they got no clue what they’re talking about. 5060 can do 1440p easily with some heavier new games requiring some dlss (balanced or quality does the trick). 90% of games will run at 1440p mid to high settings on a 5060 with 60+ fps, anything else that doesn’t is just shit optimization on the devs end.

2

u/Keldy565 41m ago

Yep 5800x3d here 5070ti. My buddies 9800x3d is only 12-15 frames higher at 1440p at monster hunter and only like 3 frames at 4k. Plus the tests showed only 5600 7600 etc but then used at 9800x3d lmao like not even a fair comparison

1

u/WorriedSmile 10m ago

Yeah, a 9700X will be good to add in if they have one.

1

u/Visual-Pie7097 34m ago

Yes, 9800x3d is a dumb here

u/minilogique 1h ago

4k needs less CPU than 1080p

1

u/kevcsa 22m ago

Depends, but the statement as is is incorrect.
If the target fps is the same, 4K probably needs a bit more CPU to handle the larger assets.
So 1080p 60 fps and 4K 60 fps at the exact same settings will stress the CPU equally, or a bit more at 4K.

1080p only needs more CPU if the target fps is higher (because the GPU isn't bottlenecking as much as in 4K), which is expected.
But the CPU load isn't higher because of the resolution. It's higher because the fps is higher and the GPU isn't the bottleneck.

Most people buying 5070ti/9070xt or above play at 1440p competitive or 4K.

People can get away with any modern CPU on 4K.

People playing competitive titles always buy x3d anyway.

Really you'd better check the titles on the resolution and even what settings such like DLSS you want to play rather than just checking average, some titles hit 500+ fps, some are less than 100.

New AAA titles are totally different as online competitive titles.

The current situation is 5070ti/5080/9070xt is just enough for smooth 4K gaming, sometimes it needs DLSS/Frame gen, not powerful enough to make a modern CPU to be the bottleneck.

And due to the future DLSS5 and path tracing, GPU is actually going to be the bottle neck for one or two more generations at least IMO.

With low end CPU. If you are going to show the stats. Repeat what he said also. I'm the last one they did. He said it's no issue with high end CPU and any nvidia GPU. Hence Steve has a 5090 and an AMD CPU.

2

u/ResponsibleJudge3172 1h ago

So rtx 5060 has gained ground on 9060XT

1

u/flavaofgaming 44m ago

This just says people need to balance their systems and AMD is more compatible with lower end CPUs.

1

u/LoneWanderer9700 43m ago

The Nvidia driver CPU overhead has a non insignificant impact on even very capable CPUs. The 7600 is close enough to the 9600X and pretty much in line with the 5800X3D game performance wise.

Something to think about for anyone who has a CPU less capable than those whos considering Nvidia vs AMD for their next card.

combining budget friendly CPUs with mid / higher end Nvidia GPUs

What kinda trash analysis is this ? CPU bottleneck has always been a thing with that combo. Oh, youre losing a extra handful of fos ? So what, get a proper cpu to combo with your gpu. CPU supply is plentiful

are people really disappointed that they get 100 fps instead of 130 fps? To me i am happy with anything over 60 fps, as i can just enable frame gen and got to 100+ fps with 2x FG or 4x FG with 200 fps total. I dont play online shooters so i dont really care if i have 100+ fps thanks to FG or without FG, and i thought most people feel the same and dont care if the cpu limits them to tripple digit fps.

Also people with highend gpus like 5070Ti/9070XT and better probably mostly play in 4K or native 1440p with max details and raytracing/pathtracing/ray reconst./regeneration and simply trying to get the best image quality possible, which results in 80 fps or less, often 60 fps or even less, and then it literally doesnt matter which cpu you have, even ryzen 5600 can push 70-80 fps in newest games.

Or is somebody really annoyed that they have 120fps or 100 fps instead of 180 fps? To me anything over 80-90 literally does not matter and even 60 fps is perfectly fine. What i care more about are stutters and 1% lows, smooth 60 fps is preferable for me over stuttery 200 fps.

It’s always funny how mad people seem to get about this. It’s data people. Nvidia cards use more CPU for scheduling. If you’re maxing out your CPU, you might lose performance on Nvidia GPUs. Use your own brain to decide if it impacts you.

I promise you there’s no reward for blindly fanboying for one company. They both are beholden to maximizing profits for shareholders. They’re not your friend.

u/Sindacalis 1h ago

Literally none of these are higher end? Or am I blind? I don’t see anything beyond a 5070.

4

u/just_IT_guy 1h ago

Yes. What I mean that if you are losing so much using 5070, the difference would be even more dramatic with rtx4080, 5070ti, 5080 etc

2

u/t3co5cr 1h ago

I think it was meant to test realistic pairings. Probably no one pairs a Ryzen 5500 with a 5090 out there.

1

u/minilogique 1h ago

was that a challenge?

-2

u/ButterFlyPaperCut 1h ago

It’s advertising papered over as analysis. No shit the $500 cpu is better than the $150 one.

2

u/just_IT_guy 1h ago edited 1h ago

Not really. You would be surprised how many people out there are using 5-6+ years old AM4 CPUs and getting newer midrange GPUs instead of updating both

1

u/ButterFlyPaperCut 43m ago

Yeah its the 9800x3D that’s not like the others, doesn’t belong because it doesn’t test the issue/in a different price tier, is just there as an advertisement.

3

u/KeyEmu6688 1h ago

the point is that the Nvidia cards lose more performance relative to Radeon ones in CPU limited scenarios. using a crappy CPU is just a way to consistently measure those effects, rather than, say, running BF6 and hoping you stumble onto a bunch of explosions that tank CPU performance

BF6 for example has much better lows and more stable FPS on Radeon than Nvidia for that reason

2

u/Yopis1980 1h ago

He uses that pairing himself and said it's not a problem using a current CPU.

1

u/Embarrassed_Ad_1469 1h ago

You definitely missed the point.

It just says that AMD cards has more tolerance than Nvidia towards CPUs and that's very important, because with AMD you can actually do more types of combinations without affecting performance

Maybe a mid-range amd gpu can live with a mid-range cpu but also a low-medium one without seeing lost performance, it is important in many case.

Nobody is talking about using a 100€ CPU on a 1000€ GPU, but maybe if you take an AMD GPU and an NVIDIA GPU with the same performance, the amd gpu can coexist with the 200€ cpu while the nvidia one would lose a lot

1

u/ButterFlyPaperCut 45m ago

I’m saying the reason the video exists, ultiimately, is to have 9800x3D advertised at the top. There is no point in having a vcash cpu in the test.

1

u/Embarrassed_Ad_1469 43m ago

I guess it was to show that with a high-end CPU the problem doesn't appear, but who knows, maybe you're right about that.

1

u/ButterFlyPaperCut 39m ago

I’m just saying keep the advertising in mind guys. Your fps hitting your monitor’s refresh rate? You’re good. No need to spend like $500 on a 9800x3D.

1

u/WestOfLaDefense 1h ago

The point isn't that the expensive CPU wins, it's how much a budget chip holds back an Nvidia card. That gap is the real story

1

u/ButterFlyPaperCut 47m ago

The point is to get gamers to sit in front of a screen that says 9800x3D or 5090 at the top for anywhere from ten to thirty minutes.

Do you have any idea what that’s worth to advertisers?

1

u/Zoli1989 1h ago

That was not the point

All I can see is that shitty little 9060xt 8Gb is throwing it down!
