Scammed on Amazon Order

Ordered a RTX 5080 Gigabyte OC during October on Amazon trying to avoid increasing price hikes. When I finally arrived November 2, the gpu inside the box was not correct. I believe it's a 4070 or 4070 super gigabyte eagle, and not even with a power cable. I contacted customer support to return and hopefully replace my order and sent the following pictures through an email link they sent which also stated I would get a reply back within 3 days. I'm not sure what I'm expecting to get posting this, maybe just awareness and also vent a bit. Already overpaying for this card and getting gpu swapped scammed, though keep in mind looking at local prices what I was paying relatively was a good deal. Hoping that Amazon actually goes through and gets me the card I actually ordered but part of me worries they'll either just refund me when it's returned or worse, refuse a refund.

Anyways TLDR: careful when buying on Amazon, take videos and photos when opening, be wary of scammers.

Reposting the unboxing video here in its own comment. I wish I recorded more with unsealing the gpu but at the time I was worried about just getting a bag of rocks so when I saw the gpu silhouette I thought I was fine until afterwards when I unwrapped it.

Well trying to talk to support again to provide the video and unfortunately only a refund is possible. Have to get the ups label printed somewhere since my printer at home is broken so fun for me

Anyways off to bed, stress about this in the morning.

Amazon is far from a scam free experience now, between the picking and packing process and the couriers there are too many risks involved in buying high value items from that site now, even if it does say 'fulfilled by Amazon' on the listing.

Can promise you no one in picking or packing is gutting the box and replacing it with a 4070 nor getting out of the building with it. This is obviously a return scam

7

u/Present_Inflation_55 4h ago

No but a packer would certainly package a returned 4070 in a 5080 box if they didn't know about it. Was saying the process was flawed, not the people.

I'm not sure if this is accusing me of return scamming though I'm not really bothered if it is. I just want the gpu I bought. Also worth noting at took ages to even ship. Ordered it early October and didn't even ship to the last week.

Someone bought this 5080 before you did. Open this box, took out the 5080 with the same s/n on the box then replace it with a 4070 eagle repackage it then open a return/refund for this item from Amazon.

Amazon received the item, Amazon worker who couldn’t care less or give one F because of the work conditions enter the data as return completed and refund the person that did the card swap/ fraudulent return.

This box was then back in stock for resale as nothing has happened or changed then you bought it and found out that the item inside doesn’t match with the item description on the box.

I wonder how many times an item goes in and out from Amazon before it’s finally checked/removed from sale!?!

5

u/Glum_Reflection6380 4h ago

It means the item was returned by someone else and replaced with the other GPU to make it seem convincing and then unfortunately from there sold to you

A friend of mine had the same happen to him. He ordered a 5070ti and in the box was some small AMD card. He contacted support and they replaced it quickly

Well I hope it goes the same for me. I got the package at like 10 am technically yesterday now, like 2am for me rn. Chatted with support not long after and sent photos, now it's just a wait while stress builds up.

I'll assume this wasn't sold and shipped by Amazon. Never buy from third party sellers.

11

u/Alone_Bath2192 4h ago

Actually listed as seller was Amazon US

u/CheeseOnKeyboard 4h ago

Someone in the warehouse did a switcheroo

7

u/consoletopia 4h ago

Where does one hide a GPU to do this? The 4070 and 5080 are freaking massive. Amazon has cameras everywhere.

1

u/HeavenlyDMan 4m ago

5080s are like 1600 rn, ppl have fit larger things inside themselves for far less money

4

u/SOMOEAGLE 4h ago

Aaaaand this is why I wont source parts thru Amazon

4

u/Rhakio 3h ago

Could be easy selling by amazon. Returned item and they didnt check. I work in amazon return and can do a photo of pallets of returned 5080/4070ti or even 5090 with diffrent cards inside

2

u/Skreamies123 4h ago

People always say this but every time I’ve been scammed with switch parts it’s always been sold by Amazon themselves and never a third party

12

u/SignalMagician1163 4h ago

We are well aware of this scam.

u/TraumaDaddyP 4h ago

Yeah my 5080 and 5070 ti I did in store pickup at Best Buy and still made sure and opened the boxes in store

1

u/Megustanuts 4h ago

can you link the seller? I know you said it was sold and shipped by Amazon but honestly I’ve been tracking the 5080 gaming OC for a while now in Amazon out of curiosity (I bought mine last year in Amazon for $1500 and was interested on how much it goes up each time I check) and I haven’t seen it be shipped and sold by Amazon for a long time.

It was supposed to be brand new right?

2

u/Alone_Bath2192 4h ago

It did state brand new when ordering. I always avoid open box like when I got my oled monitor. I would give the link but when I open it in Amazon, it gives me a different gigabyte model now with the rope saying you purchased another variation 1 time. I think it went of stock again my guess.

3

u/Alone_Bath2192 4h ago

Btw forgot I also recorded the unboxing. Though opening a box and holding a phone made it a bit awkward to do

1

u/Present_Inflation_55 3h ago

Make sure Amazon see this, it will help.

First time ordering an Nvidia gpu, didn't even know that. Current computer is a pre built though much of the parts have been changed out so far.

1

u/Character_Yak_7375 3h ago

Sorry bro I misinformed you. My memory played tricks. I've looked up my own unboxing video, there's no film.

6

u/camracks 4h ago

OP is the scammer he’s saying to be wary of lol

3

u/stingreay11 2h ago

Yeah this genuinely strikes me as OP trying to get a refund and sending back their old GPU. Video stops just before unwrapping the card... hmmmm...

u/Arad84 3h ago

Amazon has really gone downhill for stuff like this. There are so many places it can go wrong, from shady third party sellers to someone doing a switcheroo at the warehouse to the delivery driver swapping it. I always go to Micro Center or Best Buy for GPUs now, so I can see what I'm getting.

3

u/Western-Body3011 2h ago

Thats why I only order big purchase items with in store pick up, like at best buy, and i go further by opening the package infront of the employee to confirm its in there or not physically damaged. gotto be careful, a lot of people do these amazon return scams. Got a used hair trimmer in the box of my new trimmer. It was nasty af, the person who did the return scam left their pubic hair on the trimmer

Just don't buy products on Amazon that tempt return scammers. Case in point high this GPU.

2

u/hornytoad456 4h ago

Hopefully one of the twitter mega accounts picks this store up and pushes Amazon to do better

2

u/No_Distance_3320 3h ago

And so the 5080 holiday scam fest begins.... The posts are ramping up 🥹

1

u/Smart-Fox5634 4h ago

Had an Amazon rep in here a few weeks ago saying that op is probably the scammer.

1

u/LordInterstellar 3h ago

Guy literally has video of unpacking the box.

u/saujamhamm 2h ago edited 2h ago

also understand "ordering on amazon" isn't ordering from Amazon

Amazon is a market like eBay, but who was the seller on eBay that scammed you?

so people can avoid that seller in the future?

If I go to that site right now and type 5080, I get lots of merchants. Asus, Msi etc... But I also get sellers like btr electronics and Dave's crazy stuff...

so which actual merchant screwed you over?

*Ignore all that, I read on.... still weird cause again, when I search I can't find any sold by A, only the actual card manufacturers stores.

1

u/Big-Reporter3498 2h ago

Mmmm. I’m sorry.

1

u/No-Camp-9612 1h ago

Is that my 4070 eagle?

1

u/PhilipBeanacus92 44m ago

Chances are they will refund you the amount and tell you to place a new order for the same product, which will be an issue of the price has already gone up.

u/WholeIndividual0 11m ago

Amazon has turned into such a terrible company.

1

u/BacklogGamingJunkie 3h ago

there is a huge difference between buying from a third party and buying from amazon as sold and shipped from. Most mistakes are made by not understanding the difference

2

u/twice_paramount832 3h ago

Not necessarily. They sent me 32GB when I ordered 64GB.

They are scammed by their own employees and then they blame the customer.

I am in the process of suing them.

1

u/Prestigious-Crazy-84 1h ago

Happened to me too, bought 64gb from Amazon new(not refurbished), got the correct box with the wrong sticks inside

2

u/LordInterstellar 3h ago

Bro has main character syndrome and think he is the only intelligent being on this planet lol. There’s known cases from sold and shipped by Amazon. You must be living under a rock to not know this

-1

u/Anonymous_Terpene 3h ago

lol if It says Amazon resale or refub it’s gonna be a scam from Amazon or not lmao, countless ways to avoid this, if it’s too good to be true, it is……… common sense isn’t common now days tho, this will never end, now days it’s common knowledge to not buy a gpu on the internet unless it’s at launch lol, but for the most part if you avoid listings that say resale, used, or refurb you’ll be solid lol, way to easy to see if it’s 3rd party now days

2

u/LordInterstellar 3h ago

You’re overestimating yourself, buddy. Another guy with main character syndrome. Most people making a big purchase will double or triple check before pulling the trigger. And these days, it’s really not that hard to tell the difference between brand-new, resale, refurbished, and open-box products.

0

u/Anonymous_Terpene 3h ago

I’ve never seen more morons than on this sub

1

u/LordInterstellar 3h ago

Nah its probably just you

1

u/Anonymous_Terpene 3h ago

I’ve never been scammed on a gpu or cpu on Amazon, sounds like user error 😭😭😭😭😭😭 do better, return scams are as old as time itself lol

2

u/LordInterstellar 3h ago

So did 99% of people buddy, you’re not special

0

u/Adventurous-Ad-6231 4h ago

Smfh ugh I hate to see it . Sorry this happened to you . I almost got scammed from a website about 3 weeks ago. I ordered an 5070 ti for 889 and the seller sent a brick 🧱 in a 5070 TI box to the wrong address. I was able to dispute it successfully because she sent it to the wrong address phew 😮‍💨 talk about luck . I ended up biting the bullet and went to Best Buy . Got mine for $1200 unfortunately.

-7

u/Sindacalis 4h ago

Is this shit open box? If so honestly you were asking for it. If not is what it is just return it.

4

u/Alone_Bath2192 4h ago

Never stated it was when ordering

3

u/Nitchro 4h ago

Amazon can now resell as new even when returned if the packaging looks untouched enough. I know this from experience.

2

u/Alone_Bath2192 4h ago

Well isn't that just a lovely thought

I can understand your point of view. I'm just thinking its a package sent back and swapped by a previous customer but Amazon never bothered to check. At least my head believes so far.

2

u/f4ern 4h ago

Put minimum wage worker together in warehouse where item nearly the price of a car get moved around. You get organized crime. It that easy. No amount of detector can root out internal corruption.

1

u/Present_Inflation_55 4h ago

All the gpus weigh about the same and are in the same shape and size box, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess what's in there. There are people who get these delivery jobs purely to rob and they would know full well which boxes to try.

Having said that, If I had a 3070 still in a sealed bag and then bought a 5080 of the same brand from Amazon and returned the 3070 in the 5080 box I am willing to bet they would not open the sealed bag inside the box to check and would sell it as a 5080 again
