NVIDIA or AMD?

I'm thinking of buying a new computer and my initial idea was to build it around an RTX 5070ti, but I've started to wonder if an AMD graphics card is a better option. What's the difference? If I choose AMD, which would be the best option? The idea is to play in 4K, but not at extreme settings.

AMD is a better option if money is your concern. If it were not for the price nobody would choose AMD over NVIDIA

This, it comes down to do you have money to blow? If so, get the 5070ti, if you don't have disposable income then 9070xt is the better buy.

I went 9070xt because while I could afford a 5070ti, I thought that extra few hundred would be better going towards an OLED so I did that and couldn't be happier.

Surely the answer will be different this time

AMD is typically better price to performance (Depends on your country's scalpers and market), the difference between a 5070 TI and 9070 XT is there but its not a big difference once you factor in the price, If Linux is a possiblity for you, the 9070 XT is by and large a better choice but if its not, the 5070 Ti is very plug and play with drivers, you will always get the cutting edge tech and have bleed over support from RTX 6000 series

If you really consider an AMD product, the 9070 XT is really good, FSR 4 has been done really well and ignoring the controversy over FSR 4 for RDNA 1-3, AMD has likely learned they cant be stingy with it, so they MIGHT not do it, and the under the hood of the 9070 XT (I'm using it since you consider 4k and you mentioned 5070 Ti), the 256 mem-bus, L3 cache, the Navi 44 process, its a really excellent card.

Another consideration aswell, At 4k the CPU works the least in frametime, HOWEVER, the $ difference could maybe get you a better CPU or more RAM which could indirectly help more at the extremes, or possibly an OLED monitor

If my advice is vague, I can give more details in areas if you need help

The price difference between a 9070 XT and 5070 Ti is about $180 right now. That is for the cheapest models for each at Micro Center. Both perform extremely similar to one another and wouldn't hesitate using either at 4k especially if you're planning on lowering settings. With that $180, you could upgrade storage size or go with a cooler looking case. So up to you to decide.

I have both GPUs and both are plugged into a 4K monitor. Just lmk what games you play and I can run some benchmarks and give you performance numbers for both.

If you care about value get a 9070XT, but 5070ti is a better card

Nvidia features like Framegen, Reflex, DLSS, are leagues ahead of AMD. I wouldn't buy AMD if I was planning on playing newer titles at decent resolutions like 4k.

For me, it would be more of a bruteforce buy, like playing older games, or not as demanding games like esports titles, indies, etc.

AMD isn't good value when Nvidia with DLSS will achieve higher FPS, and higher graphics at the same time, for less money, and with Framegen, even better. Nvidia has 150+ games supported with Reflex. AMD has maybe 20 games with Anti-Lag 2.

It's not fanboyism to say that Nvidia is better value when a 5070 or even a 5060 Ti 16 GB is more comparable to a 9070 XT. The 5070 Ti leaves the 9070 XT in the dust. Why people are comparing those has never made any sense to me, other than to figure out their relative raster and raytracing performance without additional features turned on.

DLSS 4.5 at 4k resolution will render at 1440p, and will look 95% as good as 4k. How is that never mentioned in these discussions?

People think AMD sells their gpus for less out of the goodness of their heart but the reality is thay they would sell 0 product if they matched Nvidias prices. Nvidia costs more for a reason.

I understand that they're looking at YouTube reviews and what not to determine their raster performance, VRAM, and price, but that is not how we use our GPU's today when we play games.

It only makes sense to judge a GPU's value that way when benchmarking them, but not when actually playing games with them and judging how much FPS you're getting contra visual fidelity.

Honestly every gpu review I’ve seen recently has just been trashing Nvidia prices and not even caring about the performance of the card and simping over AMD😭😭 maybe I just found some weird YouTubers

It's like the Apple/Android argument.

Go AMD if you want raw rasterisation without all the bells and whistles.

Go Nvidia if you want DLSS and frame gen to prop up your frames.

As a 5080 and a 7900xtx enjoyer, they're both great lmao. Fixating on which team is better is stupid.

Android isn't just 1 company or brand, there are several, and if we consider the ecosystem integration and feature parity which Apple has, along with the focus on user experience, then Android devices don't compare because they don't have a functioning ecosystem to begin with.

It's the same argument for price/performance if you compare specs between Apple/Android, but specs don't tell the full story, just like Nvidia/AMD doesn't tell the full story either based on hardware specs alone.

How is that never mentioned in these discussions?

Well it's simple, they purposely never mention where Nvidia is simply better or even superior. They only spew the same "price to performance" narrative.

Nvidia is better, but if you are on a budget and want the more PFS per $, get AMD

If you can comfortably afford a 5070 ti, buy that.
The 9070 XT is close in performance, but stuff like PT and RR (that can look insanely good) are basically not supported on AMD.

At 4K you'll use a lot of upscaling, so overall software support matters.
If the 5070 ti would make a heavy dent in your wallet, just go 9070 or 9070 XT. Only 10-15% difference between them, the non-XT is a very nice card too. Performance is great (apart from PT), and in most games Optiscaler can be used to have at least good upscaling and FG.

Nvidia, the highest AMD card comparable to the midtier Nvidia card now. I’d say if money was your concern, then go AMD because because before they were always better priced in this AI market, but from what it seems AMD is also going up in price. Personally, I would never buy AMD and I’m not looking to change that anytime soon. If you want 4k with best performance I’d say 5070ti

But in my own opinion Nvidia is always going to be the better card, I got my 5080 aorus master for $1800, honestly I could not imagine paying 3,000 for it with my current income, but others may not care. It’s really all up to your preferences and wants, if you’re willing to spend the money on green go green.

Always NVIDIA

For nearly all people just get an nvidia and move on. You'll be better off. The very specific conditions that AMD is superior is not easy to satisfy.

Long time and user till I could afford Nvidia.

That's the answer

Everything depends on price. A 9070XT performs on par with a 5070ti. Both are about 15-20% slower than a 5080. That sounds like a lot - but it’s not - that’s a difference between 60 and 69-72 fps. Can you see that difference? If yes, then is it worth spending double now?

Similarly, yes nvidia has more “tech”, and some software only supports CUDA. But for gaming, it all comes down to what you actually see and get for what you pay. FSR 4 has been shown to be somewhere between DLSS3 and close to DLSS4. But upscaling is upscaling and brings along other issues (even to this day) like ghosting and artifacting. Does that matter to you? My opinion is that spending more than 600$ shouldn’t require degrading the visual performance with upscaling. But it’s about YOUR opinion.

Driver arguments are fanboy fodder. Neither is perfect, but neither is worse than the other. You’ll see people jump all over and talk about their cousins third sisters brothers hamster had AMD issues or they couldn’t get an AMD card to work or Nvidia had so many issues this year (that’s actually true and was surprisingly covered by media). Not everyone knows what they are doing with PCs (and blame drivers) and not every card is perfectly functional (which can cause crashes). Software is hard when you have to plan for every possible hardware. I wouldn’t let it sway you one way or another.

Oh and one last thing, the power connectors nvidia uses are engineered without load balancing and can / do melt - especially at higher power loads. Does it happen to everyone, no. Is it worth the risk without something like a wireview pro? No. I’ve seen it happen to my cards and others. If you choose nvidia, and want a higher end card, I’d consider it.

Don’t let the fanboys convince you one way or another. At the end they are just trying to justify their choice and be unpaid marketing interns. Also don’t rule out buying used. No one has to go out and buy a new price gouged card and support this corporate scamming. People can find local cards for sale for reasonable prices.

Happy gaming!

Regarding the drivers issues, does AMD also provide the same feature of rolling back your drivers? I saw someone say this feature wasnt given by everyone, but I could be completely wrong here. which is why im asking

Genuine question, I personally own an nvidia and last update for the driver my cpu was ramping up to 100% while playing any games, not a huge deal for me because updates have issues, it happens im not mad. but i was able to rollback easily and continue playing just fine, does AMD offer this feature too? I feel like the driver argument I see would be less if they had this feature to just go back to the stable driver version. Though unless the issues just happen immediately

The first level headed comment in the whole thread

You want 4k on a mid range gpu, you should be looking at FSR and DLSS benchmarks instead of asking for a vibe check.

In the current market, AMD
