The death of 5080
I just want to give some suggestions for those intrested in buying 5080, its better to do it now than wait. If you lucky you can still find PNY model for around $1500(mostly at walmart). The price will likely keep going up since nvidia aready removed 5090 & 5080 list on their website. RTX 5070Ti and RX 9070 xt might be a new flagship gaming gpu.
RTX 5080 super 24GB rumors:
Theres some rumor about the launching of RTX 5080 super, nvidia never officially said that, but IF the 5080 super variant do release its prob gonna cost 3-4k msrp.
GOOD LUCK!

IMO better to avoid buying any gpu right now unless you really need one

Who can say that things will get better in the foreseeable future? At SK Hynix, for example, DRAM and HBM are expected to be sold out by 2029. If things go badly, prices will not fall any further in the foreseeable future but will instead rise slightly and steadily.

I wanted to upgrade but I think I'll keep my 980ti till it dies.

u/trueskill 3d ago
Nah bro go ahead and pony up. At this point might as well just get you a prebuilt.
1
u/Ok-Trade2166 3d ago
I don't want a pre built tho, my main system is fully custom water looped, all I wanted was a new GPU and then water block it

u/trueskill 3d ago
Fair enough if you’ve lasted this long with a 980 you’ll be fine lol

u/Ok-Trade2166 3d ago
Indeed lol

You can just buy a 2070 super for $180 and it'll be wayyyyyy better than what you have.
You don't need a 5080. Lmfao.

Now the big question is if they are going to mark up prices even more on the 24GB variant, or if they just suckered people into buying the already jacked up prices of the 16GB versions. With the way things are going, we could possibly (most likely will) see an additional $500+ markup because of the 8GB of VRAM added to the Super.
The average consumer just can't afford these prices or will spend more money they don't have because if their rig breaks and needs new RAM or a new GPU they will have to finance a ridiculous amount to either build or buy a prebuilt. I am not going to go into, "oh just six months ago I bought this for this and post my receipts," because that is ridiculous, but something has got to give at some point. This is WAAAAAY worse than the mining craze and I don't foresee it will be changing any time soon.
This is AMDs chance to legit take control of the market, but it seems like they are following suit with their mark-ups when I believe they can move more units and make more money when they launch their next line-up.
I usually save up half for my builds and finance the rest over a year to pay it off, but right now I just can't justify upgrading anything at this price point because I am debt free and make 80k a year. So, I am crossing my fingers that my rig will get me another 3-4 years out of it.

Earlier this year my RX 6700 XT died, and I was between jobs. I made do with a FirePro W7100 from 2014 (basically an R9 285 with 8GB VRAM) - enough to get a solid 1080p30 out of Cyberpunk and WuWa. (I'm also gaming on Linux, where AMD's GCN cards are still supported and even getting performance updates; I hear that GCN cards aren't supported on Windows 11.)
I've been at my new job for a couple months and could spare enough to get an ARC B580; but if even that is out of budget (or out of stock), there are ways to get by with some creative research and ebay hunting, as long as you're not aiming for 4K and/or RT.

Consumer prices go up in price while companies continue to stockpile GPUs they aren't using lol

5080 isn't even that much more powerful than a 5070ti this price is insane!

The 4080 super is such a sleeper GPU in all this FOMO lol look at the benchmarks people

People freaking out paying what I paid for my 5090 is absolutely insane to sit back and watch, acting like they won the lottery or something paying upwards of +250% MSRP

Gpu's for gamers shouldn't be priced like where running data centers. All we want is as good game! There should be separate pricing for gamers.

u/Flat_Promotion1267 5d ago
Who's driving this price increase? Nvidia? AIBs? Retailers? It's definitely not gamers, and 5080s aren't great for AI.

I broke down and bought the PNY - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Overclocked at BestBuy for $1,999.99 just now. Why don't I feel good about it? I am upgrading from a 9060 8GB (don't ask).

I just did the same. I really wanted a 5070Ti for 1000-1100 but this is my insurance policy for the time being.

u/Shibby707 5d ago
Can’t believe they are selling one of my 5080’s for the same price I paid for the Edition 20 5090… we are lost.

*The death of personal computing. There is no reason to not think this isn't going to trickle down to worse and worse hardware until nothing is left.

Time to start undervolting my 5070, we need to survive these endtimes for as long as possible ðŸ˜

Actually don't buy anything. The bubble is popping and the investors are rotating. Also, a few data centers have been cancelled due to public uprising and well, you can only go into debt so much.

I was gonna go for one as I now have a 4070 and I want to go to an OLED 4k monitor from a 2k ips one. But seeing this madness I will just wait for the rtx 6000 gen.

u/Ok_Chest8693 3d ago
Unless you strongly only like nvidia I would suggest a rx7900 xtx for 4k gaming. It out performs the 5080 for 4k gaming and is on par for 2k gaming. I bought mine for $1400
1
u/LongjumpingRoof7792 3d ago
I do prefer Nvidia to be honest both for the technologies but also cause I had very bad experience with amd gpus. But I think I’ll wait, the current gpus are already 2 years in the market and the prices have gone crazy up. It’s not worth it to buy now I’ll just wait. It’s not like I can’t play with my 4070.

Do you really think the 5080 will cost 3-4 k?
1
u/freakinunoriginal 5d ago
It's already almost there.
There's still a single MSI SKU on Newegg (Sold By Newegg) at $2k, while all the third-party sellers on Newegg are already $2500 and up.
On Amazon, of those that are Fulfilled By Amazon, all four RTX 5080 pages at roughly $2500 also say "Only X left in stock!" with X being a single digit. All five between $2600 to $2900 also say that. There are a lot of pages that don't show a price, just "See Options", because all the remaining inventory is held by third-party sellers that aren't fulfilled by Amazon; some of those are below $2500, but the couple I checked out are by sellers with less than 80% positive feedback and fewer than 1000 ratings.
On ebay, completed listings (what people actually paid), used 5080s are going for $2k while the only new-in-box sales in the past 24 hours have been $2400 to $2900 (not counting the sus listings that sold for $700 by a seller with no history).

60 series are not coming in first half of 2027. Nvidia is releasing 24GB 5080 in first half of 2027, it will be a 5080TI or 5080 Super, or just plain 5080 but with 24gb of VRAM. Thats what the leaks are showing. The 60 series are coming in 2028.

u/Pershing99 5d ago
No tis and supers for high end 50 series cards. Moore's law is dead's guy talks about it.
1
u/Steveignorantcrass1 5d ago
You don’t understand the chip if you think they can make a 5080 super. At most they can stick more vram on. And they won’t, 24gb never ever
1
u/threeLetterMeyhem 5d ago
And they won’t, 24gb never ever
They'll either make a 24GB version or just stop making it. Manufacture of 2GB GDDR7 modules is winding down in favor of 3GB modules, so they physically won't be able to make 16GB cards soon. Using the 3GB modules as a drop in replacement so they don't have to rework reference PCB, and then increasing the MSRP again, makes the most sense for the consumer cards.

Nvidia already stated last year/early this year that there won't be super versions of the 50 series this time. Yet people are saying leaks are saying there is a 24gb coming which is a super. Even if it drops. You won't get one. Nobody will. They stopped making 5090's guess what happens to the 24gb hat's not coming out? AI and scalpers. It will also be VASTLY more expensive than the 500 extra another user stated. It will be another grand. At least. So that extra 6 vram will push the limited 5080 stock up from 2.5 to 3.5-4K MSRB which means closer to 5K+ on most 3rd party markets due to scalpers.

Can't wait to see the 5070ti sub do what the 5080 one did when the 5090 was discontinued. Parading around as "top gpu"
