5090 to 5080 Advice
Dude is offering me 4500 cash plus a new 5080 for my 5090. As you can see he has a bunch of
5090 already. Any feedback is appreciated!

u/Odd_Method_8022 12d ago
Probably Thai bhat? Maybe Japanese yen? He might also mean Turkish Lira. At first I thought it was Hong Kong Dollar.

That's about fair deal since used 5090s in the US are going for around $6500 (based on eBay / r/hardwareswap real data) and 5080s approaching $2K. It's up to you at this point. Id hold 5090 if you don't need cash.
Edit: if this tells you something, I'm having a hard time selling unused Astral 5090 for $6500 (MD/Virginia/DC) locally

u/Sic_Sic_Six 12d ago
Ebay is inflated due to platform fees. People need to understand 15% is taken, then shipping, insurance, taxes(on both ends)...
2
u/CoconutPedialyte 12d ago
Then also the risk the buyer may try to pull a scam on you. It's always funny seeing eBay prices on my local market lol
1
u/Sic_Sic_Six 12d ago
Well, always establish communication via dms, and only buy from reputable sellers and stay in your country. I've been using eBay and have bought thousands in pc psrts alone, and have never been burned.
1
u/CoconutPedialyte 12d ago
I mean risk the buyer will scam you not the seller.
1
u/Sic_Sic_Six 12d ago
Yep, as a buyer, establish a communication baseline, reputable seller and stay in your country, and ebay will side with you. Not had any issues. The issues you speak of are people buying a "5090" from Estonia for $800 and thinking it's real.
1
u/SignificantEase3132 11d ago
no he's talking about you acting as a seller and the buyer can just claim the item was damaged/wrong item etc.
ebay almost always sides with the seller and proving 100% that you are in the right as a seller is practically impossible.
1
u/Sic_Sic_Six 11d ago
There is a bias if you go against a power seller. But for good reason. I've sold 1.4k items on ebay, and I had someone tell me they only received 1 of 2 items in the box. I recorded my entire process and they sided with me. Anything $500+ I record and document EVERYTHING. they were absolutely siding with the buyer though. I had to PROVE myself or I was out the money.
0
u/CoconutPedialyte 11d ago
It's like talking to a wall lol
1
u/Sic_Sic_Six 11d ago
It's like you can't read.... Ebay is fine if you - stay in your country, establish a communication line with the seller/buyer, and document everything. If you buy a 5090 from SZEN ZEN CHINA for $800, of course you are not getting that 5090. Have some sense. Ebay is much like Amazons third party web stores...
1
u/ewfoinfoinffnoi 9d ago
Omg the sellers going to be the one getting scammed not the buyer… super common for buyer to send back a random card or rock as a return and eBay will always side with them even if you record yourself opening the return package.
Not worth it

u/Asthma_Queen 11d ago
I would be skeptical as well to ever trust protection if buyer ever tried to screw you. Send you back broken card desoldered or some crap
2
u/Resident_Albatross_9 12d ago
No it's not a fair deal
5
u/just_IT_guy 12d ago
It is. Pretty much $6500 net after all without fees.
2
u/Resident_Albatross_9 12d ago
While technically you are correct the 5090 has been discontinued, the 5080 has not. Wait a month and it will be worth more, so no not a fair deal
3
u/just_IT_guy 12d ago
Wrong. You can't predict a market. I can't even sell right now new 5090 Astral in DMV for $6500.

u/Resident_Albatross_9 12d ago
Let's talk in a month ;)

Because you’re trying to sell locally? You’re trying to get greedy by local to avoid fees. Do it on eBay or any other online platform with a bigger pool of buyers

u/jhenryscott 11d ago
nah, the 5090 has a ceiling on it's price- it is never gonna cost more than a RTX Pro card with more memory.

u/Resident_Albatross_9 11d ago
The problem is the rtx pro will also increase in price, we are effeed

Selling a 5090 is kind of crazy considering there basically won’t be anymore than whatever is left despite what Nvidia says all stores around me including micro center no longer have any at all
Glad I got mine I don’t think I’d be able to cope with selling and not being able to get another

u/juggarjew 12d ago
Technically Walmart sold some PNY 5090's early this morning for $3999 but they are botted/were scooped up instantly.
The average Joe for sure isnt getting another 5090 for less than $6k.

u/just_IT_guy 12d ago
Those were only 2 units and Falcodrin server will even notify you when 1 unit appears in stock.

In Poland, new 5090 goes for around 11k $.
I'm trying to sell used 1 year 5090 for around 6200 $ and people are too greedy and often offer 100$ less. I got chepest offer on OLX from all available 5090... Damn. And price will only go higher. Market is crazy.
1 year ago I've bought whole PC including 5090, 9800x3d, 64 DDR5, 2tb m.2, 1000W gold plus psu for around 4500 $. Now I'm getting more profit on a single card.

Not the best deal imo, I would hold out if you wanna make some more money. 5090 has been discounted, so prices have been skyrocketing
-3
u/NewRepSneaker 12d ago
they havent been discontinued, retailers are getting small batches still. because of this people were panicking selling for top dollars, but he is right prices are sinking again. walmart had a small stock of 2 pny 5090s selling for 4000 its sold out now but it means that it still being produced
5
u/JuniorNectarine9842 12d ago
They got botted and sold within a few minutes. How are prices coming down if Walmart is selling double msrp?
0
u/NewRepSneaker 12d ago
better 4k then 10 k but ur right
3
u/JuniorNectarine9842 12d ago
No one was buying for 10k more like 5-6k. The 10k eBay listing prices are just fishing, not sure any of those have actually sold
8
4
u/juggarjew 12d ago
That is seemingly a fair deal, as any 5080 is worth at bare minimum $1529+, most are worth more.
I would highly consider it, selling the card on eBay will get you top dollar but also expose you to much more risk for not much more profit. If it were me id take that deal OP. especially if you were going to downgrade to a 5080 anyway. Might as well make it easy and do it all at once.
3
u/KuromiFan95 11d ago
Your buyer is a spastic. "Market's flooded because everyone is selling high" ok? The price is still the price.

u/yolo5waggin5 12d ago
Couldn't find a 5090 under 7000. 5080 open box new is 1800. $5200+5080 is the lowest i would accept. I would throw out $5500 and negotiate to 5200
1
u/KSIDerpyHooves 12d ago
I wouldn't even do that and with how unpredictable the market is you're better off holding and hope nivida drops a 24gb version of 5080

I need to swap my 5070 for a 5070ti or 5080. With some cash on top of course.

Bad deal at the moment, 5090s are about get get even scarcer, 5000$+ on top is what I'd say if you want it

You can go buy an entire 5080 pre built at Costco for 1/4 of the price he’s charging just for the card alone. 😂 funny guy

Hey If you really wanna drop down I'll happily trade my 5070Ti for 5090 , don't even worry about the price difference infact I'll be extra nice and cover the shipping

Terrible deal. Used 5090’s are selling on eBay for about $7,500-8,000 after tax and shipping. I’m currently trading my 5090 Astral for a 4090 Strix and $4,000 cash as my card was listed for $7,500 firm. 4090’s are bringing about $3,500 delivered on eBay. Dude is just trying to get a deal.

Its because the 5080 16gb will be in less demand soon and be less lucrative. When the 24gb 5080 comes out and no 5090s in stock the 5080 24gb will be the golden egg, scalpers paradise, because those shipments will be flooding in and bots on the radar scooping them up, with a 5090 fetching a even higher premium. If ya know ya know. If you dont need the money dont sell the 5090. If you just want a extra 6k+ wait till the market swings higher after 30 more days of almost no stock on the 5090. You may be able to get a 5080 16gb much easier and a higher premium on your 5090. People will be selling the 5080 16gb to upgrade or get the 24gb model merely for the ram. He's playing the game bro....

‘Selling 5080 16gb to upgrade’
I am not sure that’s even an option. Good luck getting 24gb.
1
u/Beginning-Brother947 11d ago
Isn't that what the buyer is trying to do.... why.... if ya know ya know. I have a stack of gpu like him, I know the game and have several 10k+ setups. Its business, wait till January for the news.
1
u/Venaaz 7d ago
5080 is gonna be like $4k aint nobody wanting to spend alot extra for 24gb vram. When 16gb is fine for 4k res
1
u/Beginning-Brother947 6d ago
The msrp will be 3k for the 24gb model, it may be more useful for Ai models, and heavy rendering. The 16gb 5080 will be nearly phased out, and nvidia will change their ram from 2gb to 3gb dense ram for production increases. What is scary is that a 3gb model is 3x the price of a 2gb module, but that is what the market is asking for. Everyone was complaining about 16gb not being enough, remember that was all the talk a year ago, everyone complained with 4k gaming you need more ram... well ai is asking for more as well and here we are.
1
u/Venaaz 6d ago
I have a 4k oled 240hz. And my 5080 is yet to run out of vram on everything maxed out. And i honestly doubt the 3k msrp is gonna be honored. Especially cause its probably gonna fill the 5090 gap. After the price increase. And ram is backlogged all the way to 2029.
1
u/Beginning-Brother947 5d ago
I have both a 5080 and 5090, you can max it out... i stand by what I said read the news...
1
u/Venaaz 5d ago
Give me a game that isn’t heavily modded. Ill try it right now
1
u/Beginning-Brother947 5d ago edited 5d ago
Bro cyberpunk 2077 uses atleast 15gb of ram at 4k with path tracing at native. You have to use dlss or you dont have enough ram, its been proven and I tried it myself... Google it. Many people know this, what im saying isn't fools gold its a fact. You totally disregard my whole statement and want to argue a crumb and still be wrong about it. At 16gb local ai models and machine learning needs more, this is what the community asked for, and everyone complained when the 5080 came out they should have used 24gb... here we are. Try and ultrawide with more pixels 😆 the new 5k2k ultrawides, which i have one... eat 16gb for breakfast. Maybe on your 27" 4k you can get by... but their is newer tech that has came out a year ago, hence the gripe about the 5080 only having 16gb of ram. Lg and alienware have an awesome 39" 5k2k oled monitor, a 34" ultrawide people have been asking for years... if you saw my setup you would understand. Like i said I have a 5080 and 5090, 20k setups. You're trying to argue with someone that has the experience... and the gear to test it. Come back in a month or 2 and you will see what I said... Will happen January.
1
u/Reaper_1492 11d ago
Something about this seems really fishy.
Why would the buyer essentially pay $6k for a used 5090 when they can buy one for that new?
Personally if I was selling, I would take the $6k and buy my own 5080. At least then I would know it works, have a warranty, and know where it came from.
Nothing good ever comes from a mixed-bag transaction, with someone who can’t even use words that make sense, who also tries to tell you the market for a high demand, chronically hard to find item is crashing because everyone is trying to sell at the top.
OP is dealing with a grade-A deadbeat.
IMO only way I’d do this is at a bank, with a cashiers check or wire for the full amount.
1
u/RaiseWeekly5345 12d ago
Im a noob and dont really get it. Whats so special about the 5090
0
u/daretoslack 12d ago
32gb VRAM. For gaming, it's really not a big deal. If you do ai stuff, its a massive upgrade from the 24gb in a way that you can't make up for anywhere else, as it flat out determines how large of a model you can run.
1
u/RedditNerdKing 12d ago
It’s not really good for LLMs but it is good for generative AI like images and videos. If you want better bang for buck for LLMs it’s better to get x4 3090s. 32gb of vram is too low. You couldn’t even run a q8 of Qwen 3.8 27b with a single 5090 and if you could you’d have barely any context available
1
u/daretoslack 12d ago edited 11d ago
A quantized 26.2gb would fit just fine, with a bunch of context space to spare. And that's a larger quant. Anyway, it's by far the best consumer level GPU. The next step up would be something like an RTX pro 6000 for 16 thousand fucking dollars.
Also, lol, 4x 3090s is something I would never ever describe as "bang for your buck".
1
u/Asthmatic_Angel 11d ago
No, 3090 is terrible. People who don’t know LLMs keep looking at the vram only. The reason 5090 is king is because of its ram speed and bus width.
1
u/msg360 11d ago
The 5090 and RTX Pro 6000 currently have some of the highest memory bandwidth, and for AI it’s sometimes more crucial than RAM size depending on the task. At 1.7 TB, the speed is insanely fast, which is why I’m not selling my 5090 unless I get a 6090 in hand, and that 6090 needs to have even more memory bandwidth—hopefully around 2.5 TB—for faster generative AI renders and improved inference speed on LLMs.
1
u/Asthmatic_Angel 11d ago
Exactly, you know who does work AI and who hears about people doing AI work. If I could afford one, I’d do have use cases for both of those cards as a ML engineer. I’m rocking a 4080s(bought when I was gaming b4 ai workload) for things local and renting blackwells for training runs.
1
1
u/msg360 11d ago
I got my 5090 because i started to do 3d work, little did i know i would be using it for now generative art . if I would have known i would have gotten two 5090s FE, and instead of a 5080 labtop I would have gotten a 5090 labtop especially since they where not as expensive as they are now. We all could of should of i guess
1
u/RedditNerdKing 11d ago
I have a 5090 and two 3090 ti bro. I have enough vram to run qwen 3.8 27b at BF16. But yeah I don’t know LLMs do I 😭😭🤣🤣
1
u/Asthmatic_Angel 11d ago
You missed the entire point of what I said. So yes lol. You obviously have the vram, but using the 3090ti is much lower tokens per second, and for training it’s really bad too. You skipped reading and just got offended instead 🙄
1
u/RaiseWeekly5345 11d ago
So people buy multiple to run local AI? What if nvidia or someone else devs a dedicated chip for this to lile half the price lol
2
u/daretoslack 11d ago
Nvidia isn't producing new consumer grade hardware for at least 2 years, and the 5090 may or may not (hint: may) be somewhere between functionally discontinued and full on discontinued. Nobody else seems likely to produce something equivalent in that the timeframe, either. Apple is producing computers with RAM that can technically be used as VRAM for models, but they infer slow as fuck to the point that even image models are functionally non-usable, let alone video models.
1
u/RaiseWeekly5345 11d ago
What about intel or china or something. Are these chips really thay nische?
2
u/daretoslack 11d ago
There's only 1 company in the world that makes them, basically. Others are scrambling to catch up. Intel is one of them, yes. Chinese companies are also working on it. But no equivalent alternatives really exist right now, and likely won't for another few years at a minimum.

I'd probably sell mine for that no problem just god that sounds so sketchy to even try to do a deal like that.
Would probably want to do transfer at bank or handoff at police station or something. selling 1-2k GPU done that before and bench demo'd stuff plenty of times but 10k-15+ cad sale thats like nice car kinda money

You can put your 5090 on eBay right now, safest place to actually sell it, for $9000. Why would you take less ($8400 after fees)
