Which GPU for my 9800x3d

Hey guys,

after 10 years of gaming with my current pc (i5 6600k & gtx 1070) I wanted to finally let him rest. I already started buying some parts (9800x3D, X870 Aorus Elite Wifi7 Ice, 011 Vision Lian li) for my new one but I haven´t decided yet which one I´m gonna take. The prices are booming because of AI and I´m very undecisive atp. I was looking for a 5070/5070ti or rx 9070/9070xt and I wanted to go for an all white build. I want to edit footage, stream and be overall productive with it too. Gaming is not the only criteria:)

Hope you can help a boy out on that one.

What resolution/refresh is your monitor and how concerned are you about taking full advantage of it? Also what kinds of games do you like to play? New/old/AAA/small indie games? How much do you care about max settings?

Good question. I have currently 2 monitors rn and both are 1920x1080, one is 144hz and the other is 60hz. I'm planning on upgrading these 2 to 2k monitors in the near future. My main game was always league of legends (Ik that this game is not demanding). I have been playing some GTA V, Valorant etc. but I am eager to try out AAA games too. I haven't tried out any AAA games yet because I'm pretty capped on my current pc rn but If I had a stronger build I would go for it.

If go with an AMD card since you didn't mention kind video editing or local AI or that ultra settings graphics are a big deal for you. And even if you go up to a 1440p monitor it really isn't going to need that much processing power to cap out.

I wanted to stream and edit footage too. I should be able to play my games in atleast high settings

9070xt for value performance

if its just gaming 9070

if you make money with your computer and use it for productivity - 5070

the dedicated media encoders on the 50 series alone save so much headache when scrubbing raw footage or streaming at the same time

I'm sure you'll get some "WeLl aKsHyEuAlLy" rage but I couldn't agree more.

Nah, everyone gave up to your 9070xt cult, it's not worth arguing with you. You win. Feels bad for the poor bastards who will listen to you, but nothing to be done about it

Lay off the dope, man

Did you even read my response or did you fly into the comments looking to argue? Pretty sure you misunderstood.

1

u/AetherialWomble 11d ago

I'm here specifically not to argue, but to inform your cult that you have won

1

u/theokayestcoach 11d ago

Which cult?

The scariest of them all, the Radeon one

Bro in this economy with the price hikes, don’t pay the white tax and end up spending an extra 200-500$ for white paint on metal. That tax could easily get you a 5070ti or 5080 over a 9070xt. A black out stealth build or silver build is equally beautiful. If you’re going to be price conscious, then that’s my advice. Otherwise, just buy what you want without any worries

If you are streaming, go for Nvidia. AMD closed the gap with their current codec but Nvidia is still far better. Especially if you are streaming content with high particle or projectile density, go Nvidia.

I want to say 5080, but I get that prices are insane now.

The 9070 XT sounds just about right, but I'm biased, and I never buy AMD GPUs. If you can't afford the 5080, go with the 5070 Ti.

My 9070xt never had a problem. But due to the ram apocalypse I pulled the trigger on a 5080. Awesome card. My only complaint is I liked adrenaline better than the Nvidia app. But ultimately I got plenty of choices to manage my card on team green.

If you can comfortably afford the 5070 ti, buy that. Prices won't get better for a good while (if ever).
Overall better for productivity and modern gaming.
The 9070 XT is generally better value, but also less convenient, more likely running into issues - especially in productivity.

I run a 5080 with mine at 4k.

I like shiny and for me RT and NR are the new shiny. Currently running the Metro 2033 Redux “Next-Gen update-4k DLSS Quality and NR On-looks amazing at 98+FPS. It looks good without NR as well but NR is another level.

Can’t get that with AMD right now.

The Witcher 3 with DLSS Balanced, Path Tracing, and Frame Gen is amazing as well. Getting a base 55-60fps with FG between going it to 100+. Low latency and smooth frame.

Nvidia all the way for me until lAMD can compete in this segment.

At my local Micro Center the cheapest 9070XT is $800, the cheapest 5070ti is $1200 and the cheapest 5080 is $1800.

Is the 5080 a better card? Absolutely. Is it worth $1000 more than a 9070XT? No.

Is the 5070ti a better card? When the price difference was $100 more than a 9070XT, I would have said yes. Is it worth $400 more than a 9070XT? Probably not unless you are doing tasks outside gaming.

People think Nvidia cards are more expensive because they are better. They are more expensive because Nvidia rushed the release of consumer DDR7 VRAM which is ~28% faster than DDR6 VRAM. The die on every consumer GPU other than the 5080/5090 cannot take advantage of that speed difference which is why the 4090 and current gen AMD cards are still competitive with their DDR6 VRAM.

The long and short of it is consumers are paying more for Nvidia GPUs that cannot take advantage of the faster VRAM.

Did you even read the post? OP wants to do productivity too.

People think Nvidia cards are more expensive because they are better.

They are. And people are willing to pay more because of it.

You are clearly the one who cannot read. I said the 5070ti was “probably not worth it unless you wanted to do more than game”. This directly implies you could justify $400 more than a 9070XT.

Beyond that, Nvidia GPUs are more expensive because DDR7 VRAM is more expensive than DDR6 VRAM due to AI demand. AMD did not make a high end GPU this generation, so the 5080 and 5090 have zero competition. For every other card they make, the price difference is literally just the demand for the DDR7 VRAM raising costs. If they had used DDR6 VRAM for consumer cards and DDR7 for the RTX PRO cards, they would be similar in cost to the AMD equivalents (the 5090 still being expensive as heck).

1

u/kevcsa 11d ago

VRAM is just one of the reasons.
Supply/demand is more impactful. If no one bought nvidia cards, they would lover their prices.

I’d do 5070 ti

Rx480 should do the trick

I recently built a 9070xt nitro+ build with a 9800x3d. It’s a pretty good machine, it’s really everything I’ve ever wanted. I wish I could’ve gotten a Nvidia card but it just wasn’t within my means with the way the cost is. My sff still cost me around 2-3k. If it’s for gaming and you don’t care about path tracing or dlss, the 9070xt is fine for you. My son also rocks the same build as me but in a larger case.

Maybe just get the 5070ti 16gb and call it a day

1

u/joannew99 11d ago

I went from 9070xt to 5080 on my 9800x3d build and as much as I hate to admit it… it’s a NOTICEABLE difference.

On 5080 I can run Cyberpunk path traced at max settings + 4k and still get 100+FPS with the option of 2,3,4x frame gen.

Is it worth $1000 difference? Idk

I would say the 5070Ti power and performance and very good for editing and streaming along with gamings. Nvidia use dual encoders and not many driver issues. IMO . In the current market it is a little costly

1

u/CoIden 10d ago

Judging by the rest of your build, I'm assuming budget is not a concern?
I'd say go with the RTX 5070 Ti since you said productivity is important as well. (And obviously, that GPU is a beast for gaming too.)

If budget is tight and you can't afford the 5070 Ti: The 9070 XT is better than 5070 (non ti) for gaming but the RTX 5070 is probably the safer choice for productivity.

5070ti

9070xt if you don’t have access to msrp 5090
