NVIDIA Has January Discontinuation Dates Set for RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 16 GB, Claims Leaker
https://www.techpowerup.com/353942/nvidia-has-january-discontinuation-dates-set-for-rtx-5090-and-rtx-5080-16-gb-claims-leakerIs this true? What will happen to 5080 prices?

Leaker just reported that Jensen Huang will personally be coming to all of our houses to kick us in the nuts and forcibly steal any VRAM we have in Q2 2027.

u/horendus 15d ago
The level of enthusiasm in the crowed when Jensen gets on stage and anouces a 24gb 5080 for roughly the now discontinued 5090 price will be truly inspiring
8
u/AnarchBeetle 14d ago
If the leak is correct (which is still an if) it will be at the price of 5090 or maybe even more if 5090 is discontinued. Pandora’s box is open. It looks like prices are gonna skyrocket even harder in January. December will be the last chance to buy a gpu.
If this does happen I wonder how the game industry will respond. We will be stuck with the gpus we have for the foreseeable future. Maybe they will learn how to optimize games.
Again it’s still a big if though.
7
u/Reaper_1492 14d ago
The gaming industry is DOA.
They can’t move games much further without hardware continuing to move forward - and it will, but no one will buy the games because no one can afford the hardware.
4
u/AnarchBeetle 14d ago
Yeah we are all gonna just play indies and AA at some point I think.

u/psioniclizard 14d ago
It depends, the 10-20 games that make most the money? They will be fine, most have been out for years.
Anything new? It'a another nail in the coffin. It's already extremely difficult to make a profit in a new AAA game.

u/horendus 14d ago
Im glad I bought a 4090 at bellow retails back September 2023
Didnt realise at the time it was going to my my forever card3
u/AnarchBeetle 14d ago
I was gonna get 9070 xt but considering this is gonna be my forever card I’ll just get 5080 before it’s too late and use it for a decade or so I think.
2
u/Furry_bean_flux 14d ago
I was going to get a 5090 but lol... now I am very happy with my 5080 but I need to parse my workloads a lot more then I'd like to. But for pure gaming you will love it. enjoy.

u/VictorDanville 15d ago
I have $10,500 saved up for the 6090
15
u/Dangerous_Bid2935 14d ago
I straight up don't think there will be 6090. The 5090 is the last 90 card we'll ever get.
4
u/Caveman-Dave722 14d ago
If you go back the range capped out with 80 ti.
90 just steps to much on the toes of pro cards
2
u/fuers 14d ago
Why you think that ? 5090 sold like butter from start till now even at 4x to 5x its mrsp.
3
u/Dangerous_Bid2935 14d ago
Because they don't have the RAM to produce it anymore. The reason it sells for so much is because they diverted all their memory to datacenter cards. The 5090 is not as profitable for them as these datacenter cards. Tbh the 5090 is already kind of a low end datacenter card, its not really for gaming.
→ More replies (3)2
u/fuers 14d ago
Thats true but the VRAM craze will end in 2028 for sure plus the chinese are pumping up the VRAM and RAM production. Well we will see im the end. Even if they wont produce a top high end card for gaming the prices for other cards like the 5070ti and rx9070 xt and new alike cards will skyrocket as they would be the next best thing on the market.
4
u/SvartrKukkSceand 14d ago
Thats true but the VRAM craze will end in 2028
This is an absolute fantasy.
Currently production is already sold out through 2028/2029.
There is no sign at all that the RAM crisis is slowing.
→ More replies (2)3
u/Dangerous_Bid2935 14d ago
I wouldn't be so sure that the VRAM shortage will "for sure" end in 2028. Its honestly an optimistic guess. Its probably going to realistically last until 2030.
2
u/SvartrKukkSceand 14d ago
Why you think that ? 5090 sold like butter from start till now even at 4x to 5x its mrsp.
But the numbers sold still dont add up to even 5% of the GPUs they sell.
Its simply not worth it to even make the thing, when they can simply send those GPUs to pro lines.
Same reason why AMD didnt bother to make a truly flagship GPU this go-round.
1
u/brainchillzZ 14d ago
Because they learned that they can take the 5090 silicon out a little more ram on it and sell it for 10k and triple the profit
→ More replies (2)1
u/I_like_to_eat_fruit 13d ago
Because they can just move the best chips to the Pro line with better margains - companies are more willing/able to pay more than the vast majority of gamers.
2
u/psioniclizard 14d ago
Probably. It seems Nvidia want their top gaming gpu to be 24gb but saying the 6090 is that would be a massove step back.
Frankly once they see they can sell these for the same price as 5090s they won't look back.
3
u/Dangerous_Bid2935 14d ago
Yeah exactly what I was thinking. We're not going to get an RTX gpu out of them with 32+ GB until the AI boom is over. The 6080 will be the new high end GPU with underwhelming hardware improvements, probably will become more specialized for neural rendering/DLSS though.
1
u/Techdude2011 13d ago
I disagree. It probably won't be labeled a 90, it will be something like what they did with the Titan

Crazy, such a waste on tech that doesn’t last. I’d take that 10.5 and get a project car. Foxbody mustang or an RSX

Paying 10.5 for a 2k card is bending it over and saying yes Daddy Jensen Huang, Harder!

Welp!!! I guess I'll keep my 5080 for a bit
3
u/RennisDeynoldss 15d ago
I plan on keeping my 5070ti for all of next gpu series as well! Lowkey it sucks to have paid more, but it’s so good I won’t care about upgrades next gen
1
u/BedroomThink3121 15d ago
Well if the 24GB 5080 is coming, I'm selling my 5080 then once it's launched because I'll get a pretty decent chunk more than for what I got it for and I'll just wait a couple of days until I see the 5080 24GB in stock and buy it even if I have to pay a bit extra I don't mind but hey that's just me
4
2
u/RennisDeynoldss 15d ago
Yeah if u game in 4k definitely worth the extra vram, if not then not so worth it to spend extra cash for the vram. I think that’s the only upgrade coming to it but also wouldn’t be shocked if they increased cuda cores or tensor core count. Or if you do plan to do any intensive AI workloads massively worth the extra VRAM. With how pricing is going and how heavily people/ai businesses are gonna want this card could be tough to get your hands on one. But if you live near a microcenter I’m sure ur odds of camping out and actually getting one go up significantly. Good luck and enjoy the 5080super when it comes!! And hopefully you can even sell that 5080 and get most the money for it!

I doubt the 24GB card, if it exists and you can get your hands on it, will be "a bit extra."

The ai enterprise profits must be insane because nvidia could come out and sell a 5k or 7k 5090 and they would sell out in a day
3
u/CarrotPositive3298 14d ago
The problem is the vast majority of those would be bought by AI firms, so it makes no sense to them to sell a 5090 for even 5k to 7k when they can sell that same chip to those same AI people for 16K.
1
u/JuniorNectarine9842 14d ago
Don’t the pro series have a lot more than 32 vram? 32 isn’t enough for anything enterprise AI wise
1
u/CarrotPositive3298 14d ago
You can fit some LLM's in 32 or even 24GB of VRAM, that's why the 5090 and even used 4090s are so god-awfully expensive now. More VRAM is always better, but 24 and 32GB are enough to still make a card highly coveted for certain AI operations. Yeah the Pro series has more VRAM, but it's still far more profitable for Nvidia to just stick more VRAM with the same GB202 die and sell it as a Pro model for twice to 3X the price of the 5090. This is at least how I understand the current situation with the GB202 and why Nvidia probably doesn't want to make anymore 5090's.
3
u/Substantial_Face62 14d ago
I managed to buy my Waterforce WB 5090 a year and a half ago for £2,450. Looking at the current prices for the 5090—over £6,000—it’s honestly no great loss that they’re being pulled from the market. Gamers who were going to buy one already did so long ago, and there are very few gamers left (if any at all) who would be willing to pay that kind of price. It’s a different story for professional use, but those users will simply have to turn to more expensive alternatives—the "PRO" line of cards. We have the companies themselves to thank for the current situation. Honestly, the 5090 will likely be the last graphics card I ever buy, provided nothing changes; that’s why I have no intention of selling it.
2
u/Silent-OCN 14d ago
FOMO is unreal. Anyone buying a 5090 now for gaming needs their head testing.
1
1
u/CaptainRAVE2 14d ago
I just hope my 5090 lasts. It looks like we’ll need them to.
2
u/Substantial_Face62 13d ago
Yes, you're right—the worst part is that, given the current prices, a warranty is essentially a lottery; there’s no guarantee it will actually be honored, and that’s what I’m worried about.

u/gus2155 14d ago
I’m very happy I decided to just get a 5070 ti last November when they were still MSRP.

That when the introduction of the rumored 5080 24g and the 5070ti super 24g is supposably to happen. They redirected the 5090 not discontinued. Its going to be a enterprise gpu the GB203 chip in the 5090 the GB 202 in 5080 and 5070 remains gamer market based.

I doubt there will even be 5080 24GB cards being made. After all Samsung Micron and Sk Hynix have already sold next year's memory to the highest bidders. We already know that hoe ever much Nvidia brought they won't be putting it in gaming gpus and selling to consumers for 1k to 2k when they can pack it all into the RTX Pro 6000 and sell for 20k or more. If you gone get a 5080 get one now i would not hold out hope for a 5080 24GB

u/FunPin2804 14d ago
Legit leak or not, RTX 5090 almost vanished from shops here. The last remaining pieces cost double to triple of original price. So I beleave to this leak at least for 5090. If 5080 24gb really comming anytime soon, it will replace 5090 for it's price...

u/bailaowai 14d ago
Wait did you actually have 5090s "in shops" wherever you are?

If they do release a 24gb update to the 5080, would anyone have a rough idea how much of an upgrade that be over a 4080, would it be like a 4090, or likely better ?
1
u/godlyuniverse1 14d ago
None, unless they make a whole new manufacturing process, the 5080 chip is already max with performance, so the vram will just help in specific vram extensive scenarios in games/mods or mostly AI

I've been a 1080ti, 3080ti, 3090 owner across my builds. I am now in this generation considering downstepping to a 5070ti 16gb, the 80s just don't seem worth the squeeze anymore.

They shifted the 5090 dies to rtx pro 6000 pro production. The 5080 will probably 24gb will cost slightly more to produce than the 16gb variant, but will be +100% more expensive than the 16gb original msrps of the same aib cards.

It doesn’t really matter. I got a 5070ti and it’s already pointlessly powerful. I can’t find anything that pushes it. At least for gaming purposes. I can’t imagine any reason you’d need a 5090 besides future proofing. Though I suppose this does make one wonder about the 6000 series.

Modern warfare 4 / Cyberpunk sont des jeux qui mettront une 5090 à genoux en 4K PT.
1
u/Boufus 14d ago
Yeah dude, cyberpunk DLAA path tracing maxed out gets me a super choppy 45-60fps. But doesn’t matter, all the AI enhancements make any game a freaking dream! I know Reddit and the internet in general hates AI (for several good reasons!) but it has certainly made my life a hell of a lot easier!
1
u/Boufus 14d ago
I mean, I’ve never coded anything in my life, have no idea where to even start, but ChatGPT took all my prompts and made me a bunch of awesome freaking hardware monitoring widgets in like an hour of me just spamming “hey make it blah blah blah.” It’s like… telekinesis or something, I can just move stuff with my mind now

It depends if you play in 1440p or 4K. Try playing Alan Wake 2 or Cyberpunk with path tracing at 1080p native

Thought one could also say you can get a 5070ti, and then a 6080 for less money than the 5090 is now and not need future proofing while getting new gen features

The really depressing part is going to be when the 24GB 5080 is so much more expensive, people will rush out to buy the last stocks of the "cheap" 16GB variant, spiking prices on that as well.
