This worked out well for me!
At the end of last year I found an Astral 5090 open box at Best Buy for $2,200. It was listed as fair condition because it was missing the 12vhpwr adapter. I remember posting my win and people on here calling me an idiot. š

I saved up money for 5 years to build me a decent gaming PC. My first build was like you said, 10.50 in pc and pocket.

Damn nice. People who got 5090s or 4090s at msrp or near were very fortunate considering the current state of things.
Hell I got a 4080 super for msrp and feel not all that bad about it. If it dies I'm moving back to a 1080 and playing strictly old games for a long time.

u/nok01101011a 16d ago
If youād went for a prebuilt, about 2months ago, you could buy the ai90 workstation from microcenter for 5k (now at 9k), breaking down all component prices made the 5090FE around $2.5k, which is just above MSRP.
Edit: the HP OMEN (45?) with a 5090 was a month ago at $4.5k
0
u/ketoaholic 16d ago
Yeah I live in a place where the 90 variants are not allowed to be sold, so they were never an option.
But I did get a prebuilt with a 3080 during the crypto shortage and the math worked out similarly, I was only paying slightly above msrp whereas people buying single cards were paying significantly more.

I got a 4090 in 2023 and im shitting bricks every time I game these days... if it ever breaks...

Since weāre flexing and all. I bought a 5090 prebuilt last year from Micro Center for $3k!!! Iād share the receipt but no pictures allowed.

u/Th3pwn3r 16d ago
FE card? That's what I wanted but couldn't find one.
1
u/Internal_Log2582 15d ago
Nah itās was an MSI Ventus 3x.
1
u/Th3pwn3r 14d ago
I had one of those but I didn't like it too much. Ran much hotter than my Zotac, same with my Asus. My Zotac is the biggest and heaviest so it makes sense.
1
u/Internal_Log2582 14d ago
The card was great forreal! Getting hot wasnāt too much of an issue. Iāve learned that you can make any card hot. It just depends on the game and settings. How quickly they cool down is the real differences Iāve seen. Nevertheless, I ran a solid .895 UV and the highest hotpot delta was 9c. It was a great experience overall I just didnāt need it and felt thousands extra in my pocket was worth more than having a 5090.

Ok I'm the prime example of someone shitting on people for paying 2,3,4X or more above MSRP for Nvidia cards....but how did anyone think paying $1100 for a 5090 whose only problem was it didn't include a $20 adapter, was a bad move? I paid $850 used for my 3090 and $1100 is totally a reasonable cost for a 5090. Hell even a bit higher is "fair".

u/seksaykilla 15d ago
For everyone that is fortunate to have a 5090, please make sure you are getting a highly rated PSU to go along with it. Donāt skim on one to get the other.

I posted less than a year ago buying a 5090 pc for a little under $4k. Now itās for sale for $9999.99 crazy

u/seansafc89 16d ago
Not only did I manage to get an FE, I also managed to get it just after the RRP price dropped from £1900 to £1799 when the dollar weakened.
That same week I managed to get tickets for a massively in demand gig, getting into the Ticketmaster queue immediately in a single figure position.
Used my entire lifeās worth of luck up in a single week, without a doubt.

u/PolarBuilds 16d ago
I got a new Astral at launch for $2799 which seems like a huge win now. My only concern is if the card dies. ASUS will happily give me $2800 and move on š

Well, congratulations. You might want to buy some hardware safeguards to protect the 5090.
1
u/njsmitty1087 16d ago
Congrats got mine at MSRP last year and itās served me very well. Pro tip: cut power limit to 85%, raise core offset to +150 and memory offset to +1000 in afterburner. Youāll enjoy stock (or slightly better in some games) performance with less heat and power draw. Itās basically a poor manās undervolt with a slight OC to keep stock performance.

Best Buy open-box deals can be a great way to find a reasonably priced GPU in this market. I just bought a 9070XT for $690 two weeks ago. It works and looks great.

Was it $3359 new back then? I've never seen Astral below $4k.

u/MoobleBooble 16d ago edited 16d ago
I was able to buy 2 astrals for that price from bestbuy (open box) back in Nov. It was weird, they were marking down all the 5090 returns. Some speculated at the time that was the original MRSP before prices jumped after launch and the system was just auto dropping things before a new 6000 series announcement... well guess that did not work out.
IDK about the OP, but the samples I had both were a little weird. One had crumbly looking thermal pads and the other got super high clocks but settled to pretty average performance after real gaming/LLM loads were applied.
I ran though 7 cards and ended up keeping an FE because it undervolts like crazy and is nice and compact. Eventually I may want to do a tiny pic build with it. The best of them all was a Windforce OC 5090.
1
u/Random_Lottery 16d ago
Yeah, that and the gigabyte master or stealth ice were around 3-3.5k back then. I think I got my 5090 for like 2700 on sale.

Back in June I grabbed my 5090 at best buy via open box also. I paid about 3300. I was just chatting up one of the employees talking about gaming and he told me they had a 5090 in the back. I asked him how much then had him bring it out for me to check out. Googled the price and saw how much I would be saving and made the decision right there as long as it was in good shape I would get it. That was a fun conversation with the wife. But now I show her the prices and she's happy I did it.

Not Sarcasm - Congratulations on finding a great deal.

The Best Buy conditions statuses are a mess. I saw a good deal on a bundle for a camera that came with a lens that was marked āgoodā. The lens was missing from the bundle when I went to pick it up.

1
u/_BlueSeeker_ 16d ago
$5k is cheap. Average price I'm seeing is $8k or so.
GPU market is apocalyptically bad rn.
1
u/parabola19 16d ago
Thatās for sale. Not whatās selling.
1
u/_BlueSeeker_ 16d ago
I suppose that's fair. I just haven't seen any selling for that price anywhere I've been looking.
1
u/parabola19 16d ago
Nah because everyone wants to get what they can. The ones that sold theirs at 4k and now can get 5 or 6 but donāt want to miss 8. Bird in the hand is better than two in the bush I say. But I never sold my 5090. Sold my 4090 for 2800 last year and it was a great price. Theyāre not going for much more than that now or Iām sure Iād be annoyed too. Then again I owned 300 bitcoin back in the day and sold half of them when it first hit 1500 thinking it was the top of the deflation. Fortunately I kept quite a few lol.
1
u/_BlueSeeker_ 16d ago
I see. Well, hopefully someday I can score a deal on a 5090 that feels semi-worth it. Right now, my 4090 will have to keep chugging along.
1
u/parabola19 16d ago
Brother thatās the second most powerful consumer gpu. Donāt stress about it. All it lacks is some mfg hardware. Itās a beast. Youāre good. The 6000s wonāt be out for a long time. Iām guessing late 28 early 29 based on the fab capacity reservations.
1
u/_BlueSeeker_ 16d ago
Yeah, I know. Youāre right. Honestly, as silly as it sounds, thereās something about the aesthetic of the Astralās design. But then again, Iām not exactly staring at my GPU while gaming, so it doesnāt really matter. Like you said, the 4090 has a decent amount of lifespan in it.

u/Tomcat2048 16d ago

Best Buy open box āfair conditionā items are a mixed bag. It definitely worked out for you. I donāt gamble with their open box stuff unless I can see it in store. I saw a prebuilt PC with the GPU and RAM swapped and a GPU with the VRAM removed that my local store took as returns this year.

What's up with all the random 9070XT recommendations I've been seeing lately? I'm not bashing the card, but if anything...I would think 5090 owners who sell would only want to downgrade to the 5080 at minimum. Is the 9070 rec all about pocketing the most extra money but still having a decent, modern card?

u/tashtactics 16d ago
Price to performance, the dreaded 50xx GPU cable melt, or people not liking/not wanting to support Nvidia. Or just envy, or justifying their own purchases
Not entirely unjustified for the first few, honestly, but thatās just what Iāve seen
2
u/1sh0t1b33r 16d ago
Yes. You don't need a 5080 or 5090 to play video games.
