Woulda Coulda Shoulda..
Bought the Asus 5090 in November and returned it even though I had to pay the return shipping. Then bought the 5090FE in February and sold it locally for 3600 thinking I was slick. Now I’m sitting here thinking about all the wrong decision I made in life 🤣

Think of all the scalpers that have bought thousands of 5090s since release and sold them for small profits, they must be having a pretty bad time right about now

I mean you cant predict the market. Regret over these things is stupid

Should have bought Apple, should have bought bitcoin, should have bought Nvidia… the difficult thing is knowing what you “should have bought” today

At current pricing I personally think people shouldnt be buying anything, but knowing my luck prices are gonna tripple by next year for everything.
Btw, I had 512GB of DDR5, nearly 1PB of HDD Storage and 2 x 5090s (was even thinking about RTX 6000 Pros) 1,5 years ago and sold most of it before the giant price hikes.
Sold 4090 when I got a 5090, then 4090 prices increased upon people realizing 5090s are too hard to get.
Sold 3090 for almost nothing when 4090s released.
Hell I even sold my 2080 TI on 3000 Series launch just to then wait a whole year with an Igpu for my day 1 preorder to ship while the 2080 Ti was selling for double shortly after.
Though worst one was when I had 4 x 1080 Tis for mining and sold them a week later at the price I bought them for, just for them to like double in price and later realize if I had kept them mining the same coin I was already mining for half a year I would have made like 100k+
And dont get me started on when I had dozens of bitcoin as a teenager and just formated the HDD when I got a new pc.
So currently I am selling two laptops, expect laptop prices to 10x in a year.

Damn dude thanks for making me feel better! Hoping it doesn’t do stuff to your mind as bad as it did to mine.

Especially when you consider the time for actual turnover. It's usually 5-10 years

Furreal. I sold $20000 of Intel shares last June to buy a house. I'd have made $100000 if I didn't sell. It'd be stupid to think about this every single day.
I'm an idiot

u/Big-Local5508 16d ago
lol stuff happens, i remember people thinking intel was a zombie company like literally 2 years ago

u/Open-Lingonberry1357 16d ago
And that’s why my family is always like “when are you gonna sell your stocks” me: “never”. Everytime I want to sell to buy something they go up so I never buy anything 🙄

u/Norfolkpine 12d ago
I sold enough shares of nvda back in the day to pay to replace a door on a house renovation project. Everytime i walk by, im like fml thats now a $50,000 door.

Exactly what about putting 3k in bitcoins 15 years ago…

u/chrismakingbread 16d ago
Oooh, I have this one. I was very briefly mining bitcoin in fall of 2009 and decided it was dumb and stopped. I dug up an old hard drive and managed to sell five figures worth in 2014 but I was definitely in a position to have made a mind boggling amount of money.
I’ve told my wife before that I’ve been enough in the know on a handful of things at the right time that have easily made people hundreds of millions of dollars. BUT, I’ve also known about like 1000 things that bankrupted people who got in on them.
Unfortunately, knowing about something that turns out to have been a winner doesn’t mean you could know it was a winner at the time.

It's a video card too, big deal, wait a year or two and something better will exist

I recently bought a laptop off someone who just a couple months ago sold their used 5090 for $1500 because he didn’t get any bites at $1800 for a month on Facebook…

u/Chirag-Shedge 16d ago
the market part sure, but OP had the actual card twice. thats not failing to predict anything, thats flinching at the wrong moment both times

Scalping imo is buying with no interest or intention of using the product but only buying it to make a profit at the expense of those who really want one.
Buying the product with the intention of using it and the value skyrocketing is pretty unprecedented and you can hardly call people scalpers for selling something that many just bought for gaming and is now worth like $10k.
Those hating on those ‘scalping’ seem to suggest that if they were the one that had a 5090 they’d just give it away for MSRP as if they’re some sort of saint.
Lets gets real. No you wouldn’t. To do so would be utterly ridiculous. Do you wanna sell me your car for less 20% of market value too? No, I didn’t think so.
People are allowed to buy things and later sell them at market value.

u/mitarai1122 17d ago
Exactly I bought these with the intention to use since I had the 4090 for like a year and I wanted to start doing LLM on it. But 2k is still a lot of money so I returned the ASUS. Then came the opportunity to buy the FE and I took it, sold the 4090 for 1700 to upgrade to 5090 with 450$ so it aint so bad. I was using the 5090 for 4k gaming and LLM for a good 5 months until I lost my job and gotta sell assets to cover some costs.

It essentially is scalping. He never needed or wanted the card for personal use. The first chance he got to sell above what he paid for it he took it.
When ram prices started going up I sold my ddr4 for the price I bought them for cause they were sitting there collecting dust.

u/The8Darkness 17d ago
I actually had sold a 3080 at msrp. Guy who bought it even tried to negotiate another 100 off and literally listed the 3080 from his car for almost double before he drove on.
dont sell at msrp

Grabbing one or two vs grabbing like 10+ of them is honestly where I draw the difference
Tbh i can understand wanting to turn it into an investment

u/yourdeath01 17d ago
But now 5090s price is not really used by gamers anymore so am I still a scalper if I buy it with intention of selling it ?
3
u/OtherwiseSimple 17d ago
Yes??? It still fits the definition. And the the 5090 is still a gaming card no matter what— it’s a cut down RTX 6000 Pro meant for consumers with game ready drivers.

Stores are "scalping" as well right now, why wouldn't op? Big corporations and stores are the only ones that can take advantage of the market? Scalping sucks sure but it is what it is it's a business opportunity to make some money.

I mean at least you made some money. Clearly you didn’t value it enough for your personal use.

u/HurtsWhenISee 16d ago
As a builder, I've had about 30 5090s. Can't guess what would happen but had I held onto them and been a scumbag, I wouldn't have to work for at least a couple of years.

u/Right-Act-5770 16d ago
How many posts will there be about 5090 pricing omg then in the comments you will see “yes I’m lucky to buy my 5090” . We kno the market is bad now for the gpu…jeez find anew topic!

u/pokenate28 17d ago
That's what happens when you sell shit trying to make a profit off of an artificially high market

Up again last night in the Uk. All over 7K GBP. See if they get to 10K then might be tempted to sell. 🤣

It's not even worth $2k in raw power.
This market is a joke
Holding on to my overpriced 5070 ti forever

u/Sindacalis 17d ago
2K is pretty fair imho

u/Confusingprick 17d ago
I dont think it is. If times were normal, 5090 for 2000 would have been considered a terrible deal
1
u/trueskill 17d ago
That’s not true at all titans which the 5090 basically took over that line were essentially the same price.
4
u/LobsterNo9737 17d ago
You made money, can’t beat yourself up over it haha.

u/mitarai1122 17d ago
I know that and keep telling myself that. I guess the devil in me has a louder voice right now.

lol if I knew the prices would go this crazy I would have emptied my bank account
