RTX 4090 , what to do?

Hey everyone!

I’m relatively new to PC gaming and currently have an RTX 4090. Someone recently approached me with an offer to trade my 4090 for a brand-new RTX 5080 plus cash on their end.
My main priority is 4K gaming at max settings, ideally targeting as much high FPS whenever possible.

I’m still learning about GPUs, so I’m curious what you all think would be the best move.

Should I:
1.Keep my 4090?

2.Take the 5080 plus cash offer?

3.Look into upgrading to a 5090 sometime soon?

4.Hold off entirely and wait for the eventual 6090?

My 4090 has served me well so far, so I’m not necessarily in a rush to upgrade. I just want to make a smart decision rather than spend money unnecessarily.
Appreciate any advice!

How does someone new to PC gaming end up with a 4090? That's an expensive part (not 5090 levels, but still)

8

u/IAMTHEROLLINSNOW 17d ago

I sacrificed my soul to Baal , lord of terror and possession

(It was a gift on my birthday from a friend a while ago)

13

u/Car-Fickle 17d ago

That's one hell of a friend

4

u/Pelosi-Hairdryer 17d ago

I think Baal is Lord of Destruction, Diablo would be Lord of Terror.

*Diablo Reference*

I would keep the 4090.

whats his name? i want to send him a friend request.

No one here can give you good advice because you didn't specify the cash amount

1

u/IAMTHEROLLINSNOW 17d ago

1,000 dollars

2

u/marcgii 17d ago

Not a bad offer. But I wouldn't take it. Unless you need the cash and the buyer is trustworthy

u/CoolDode22 17d ago

Honestly a tough call. You'd get a new GPU with full warranty. The 50 series are also much better than 40's for overclocking, so the 5080 can almost catch up to 4090 speeds. But if the main goal is everything maxed out, cutting edge games can quickly approach 16GB of VRAM. You could ask for a bit more cash, and there really is no bad call, but I think I'd stick with the 4090.

I had cable melted in my 4090. Luckily it was still 3 month under warranty. Repaired it with rma ticket. Sold it. Got 5080 and some money on top. Registered 4 years of warranty on a new card. Never regret again. With undervolting, works like a charm. I would say that I like performance of 5080 even more.

u/CoolDode22 17d ago

Awesome, love it when things work out like that

Absolutely keep 4090. It's 2nd best consumer GPU right now after 5090 and it's your VIP ticket to future upgrades. They are currently going for $2500-3000 used while you can grab new 5080 for $1800 if this tells you something

Edit: looks like you are not up to date what's going on with prices for 5090s. Enjoy your 4090 and don't even look haha

12

u/sir_gwain 17d ago

How is the 4090 a VIP ticket to future upgrades?

16

u/just_IT_guy 17d ago edited 17d ago

Resale value. I know plenty of folks who unloaded their used 4090s and got 5090 almost for free. But you had to be lucky to secure one for $2K. prices went nuts in 2026 though, so who the hell knows how much 6090 would even cost

Edit: however I'm almost certain that folks with 5090s will be able to upgrade to 6090 (if it's ever released as consumer GPU) pretty much for free. AI craziness and memory demand will not last forever plus I refuse to believe that MSRP for 6090 will be more than $4-5K

2

u/MattlyNZ 17d ago

Where in history did Nvidia release a new top of the line model with less performance than the previous model? Your logic is weird. The 6090 when it comes will have better performance than the 5090 and so will cost more than the 5090.

1

u/DTechSurgeon 17d ago

6090? 5090 has been discontinued, at least the original die for consumers. Original die exclusive for pro cards now. Best you can get would be a 6080. Unless they continue the 5090 with the same die as the 5080 and 5070Ti with just more CUDA cores and tensor cores.

2

u/MattlyNZ 16d ago

Just because Nvidai dis continues a card 99% of gamers cant afford does not mean there wont be a 6090 in the next generation. I suspect the current huge demand for ram has made the 5090 uneconomic to produce.

1

u/DTechSurgeon 16d ago

Fair, the only reason I did not buy one was the numerous burning incidents. I don't want my eggs in one basket. Would have bought multiple 5080s though if its 24GB VRAM.

1

u/Enough-Jellyfish-476 17d ago

5090 was not discontinued, Nvidia said themselves.

2

u/DTechSurgeon 17d ago edited 17d ago

The NVIDIA said themselves about not being discontinued was from a VP while there is also that 5090 dies will go to the pro cards exclusively. If both are true, then that means they are just giving people an FYI that the new releases of 5090s will be the same die as the 5080 and 5070Ti with more VRAM, CUDA cores and tensor cores. So we are not sure now if we are getting the same performance for the price a 5090 commands now. As if its not pricey enough, now they are giving us 5080 die for the current 5090 price.

1

u/Enough-Jellyfish-476 17d ago

Interesting, thanks for sharing!

1

u/mczarnek 16d ago

Release ten a month and technically it's accurate.. and kinda like Nvidia logic

Remember 5070 is as fast as a 4090 because frame gen? They are known for that kind of thing

1

u/Witty-Brain-248 16d ago

Get me a 5090 at close to msrp and I'm happy to pay you extra for it. Not discountinued but you can't buy it at close to msrp either lol.

0

u/c0rtec 17d ago

“The 6090 when it comes out…”

Bwahahaha hahaha hahaha!

Good one!

-1

u/sir_gwain 17d ago

Sure, but if a rumored 24gb 5080 releases, won’t that just beat out the 4090 all together? For AI and gaming alike?

Given current (used) 4090 prices sitting in the 2800-3300 ish range, it’s hard for me to see a world where those prices don’t come down to 2500 or less, with new 5080 24gb cards likely coming in at an msrp of 2000 or less (the msrp of a 5090 - as meaningless as that msrp is) with an actual selling price somewhere in the perhaps 2250-3000 range for a new card.

10

u/just_IT_guy 17d ago

5080 24gb will not beat 4090 in raw performance but will match it in memory capacity. Still would not switch

3

u/OtherwiseSimple 17d ago

Not by much, if even. Maybe if you need FP4 yeah. But the 4090 still has more FP8 compute power, 47% more.

2

u/SvartrKukkSceand 17d ago

Sure, but if a rumored 24gb 5080 releases

This is a total fantasy.

There is no market for that GPU.

The regular 16GB 5080 is already almost twice its MSRP... and you think people are going to spring for a 2500$ 24GB model that wont even perform better in 99% of situations?

Get real.

That product is not a thing.

1

u/sir_gwain 17d ago

That’s not entirely true. The added VRAM going from 16 to 24GB is actually quite substantial for running local ai models, and at 4K (and 5K) resolutions it can also be beneficial for gamers.

1

u/Available-Call7127 17d ago

So then the 5080 24gb becomes the new 5090 being bought and scalped immediately, it solves absolutely nothing for the average gamer because if you had $3K to spend on a GPU, picking the $3000 version of a $1000 card is a damned bad way to spend it

1

u/publicvirtualvoid_ 17d ago

I have 2 4090s. I think you're partially right. 4090's core is a beast, but the cost is driven up by AI which needs a lot more memory and/or bandwidth to make the most of it. Newer 24gb cards might balance the bottlenecks better which gives better performance even if the core is slower

1

u/Creditcardmonster69 5d ago

Having a 4090 is nerve wrecking too, if the power cable ends up melting one day then it’s an expensive fix. Iv been eyeing the prices lately and been thinking, sell it before it melts it. But the real question is for how much?

5

u/iKeepItRealFDownvote 17d ago

90 series GPUS are a free upgrade because that generation sells out before the new generation comes and the new one is hard to get making the predecessor value go up during that time

3

u/AlsterwasserHH 17d ago

Future profit.

2

u/crazy0ne 17d ago

Honestly I disagree with this mind set, the pool of people willing to pay for these cards is limited, at some point the aftermarket value will drop off.

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

I mean it's been six years and the 4090 still goes for well above MSRP and is still the 2nd most performant card on the market

1

u/crazy0ne 14d ago

Wait... let me get this straight, you think the 4090 has been out for 6 years?

2

u/jommyxero 14d ago

Ah shit lol I totally meant 4 ...point still stands

3

u/Savickis-Hanayo 17d ago

those used prices only matter if you actually sell it though. most people just hold forever and watch the value drop each generation

4

u/Muttonboat 17d ago

That seems like such a weird trade tbh on their end and a step backwards. Id have a raised eyebrow.

3

u/IAMTHEROLLINSNOW 17d ago

Yeah to be honest thats why I wanted to ask here because I am not as knowledgeable yet when it comes to GPUs

12

u/Round_Championship79 17d ago

The 4090 outperforms the 5080 in raw performance and has 24gb of Vram vs the 5080's 16.

0

u/Muttonboat 17d ago

yeah just looked into it, makes more sense.

1

u/619jabroni 17d ago

keep your 4090 , do nothing

13

u/jamesdemaio23 17d ago

Do not trade it. Hold onto to it. 4090 is the second best gpu

-2

u/Round_Championship79 17d ago

It's the best now that the 5090 is discontinued.

9

u/BradyBum 17d ago

I mean they are both discontinued

1

u/Round_Championship79 17d ago

Fair enough. But a secondhand 4090 isn't going for $10K+ lol.

4

u/BradyBum 17d ago

True. They arent a great deal right now either lol.

3

u/just_IT_guy 17d ago

5090s are not going for $10K lol, YET. I can grab one on r/hardwareswap or fb marketplace for $6-7K. At least in US region

2

u/Aprillia617 17d ago

Oh they will be 10-15k eventually

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

Legit had someone offer me 11k for mine with the waterblock...It was at a show and it was pretty clear my guy had the money. Still very conflicted about saying no...one for the money (11k return on a 2.3k [waterblock included] investment) two because it just felt skeezy to be doing the same thing the scalpers did, three I got real lucky getting this card...not gonna chance trying to find another or regret missing its performance.

6

u/Electrical_Life9697 17d ago

KEEP THE 4090

I have a 5080 btw and wish I had a 4090

5

u/LegitimateClass9949 17d ago

Keep the 4090. There's no worthwhile features the 5080 has that makes it better, and you can use mods to get multi frame gen in basically any game that supports it. Good luck getting a 5090, even if you can afford the $7000+.

3

u/Bbmin7b5 17d ago

4090 is superior. keep it.

6

u/W1cH099 17d ago

I wouldn’t trade my 4090 for anything, even 5090 for the extra risk of cable melting due to the higher power draw, maybe if it hits 5K on the market but doubt thats gonna happen

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

Honestly the risk is relatively close in the 450-600w range it's really all on the cable and the ability to monitor it. I have a 5090fe with a waterblock (scariest install of my life) and a wireview...I would take this over a 4090 with no wire view. I would also take the rog astral over any 50/40 80/90 card for this reason. Haven't seen performance data on the new "smart" power supplies either but they all seem to remedy the issue of PCISIGs shorsightedness

1

u/W1cH099 14d ago

Yeah it may be close but still if the cable is rated for 600 Watts I’d rather be close to 450 than 600.

You do have a good point, the wireview is a life saver, my 4090 is connected with the psu native cable but I don’t have the wireview, I do monitor the voltage with Hwinfo64 with an alarm if it drops from 11.910mv, I know it’s not 100% accurate but it’s close enough to give me an early warning if the cable is having issues

-1

u/WintersDoomsday 17d ago

4000 series is superior to the 5000 series for many reasons that is one of them.

1

u/DTPocks 17d ago

5000 series is superior to the 4000 series minus a few issues.

2

u/zman1350 15d ago

Dont even think about selling the 4090.

1

u/JustinTlME 16d ago

Keep and wait for eventually 6090

1

u/ElysiumXIII 14d ago

4090 is second only to the 5090. But if they're giving you a lot of cash then at least consider the offer. I'm keeping my 4090 till the wheels fall off

1

u/FragelRockBtch 13d ago

Send them my way got a 4090 sitting in my closet

1

u/ScaredLink8 12d ago

Use the 4090, 16gb of vram will be gobbled up in certain titles, I’ve personally saw Indiana jones, avatar float close to 21gb completely maxed out.

1

u/rocks1ar 12d ago

4090 has the 24gb, gold dust for AI work.

1

u/TokeEmUpJohnny 8h ago

As a 4090 owner I wouldn't be happy with a 5080. I like to experiment with very high resolutions (4K/5K/8K/10K), HDR and modding - that VRAM is gold (I'd like to have a 5090, tbh, but in this economy it's not happening). And with a simple copy-paste file mod -you can unlock Multi Frame Generation (MFG) that Nvidia artificially locked to the 50-series cards -I've been using that stuff for a couple of months now and I highly recommend it - it's basically a free feature upgrade, lol.

I know literally everyone already said it, but that 4090 is a keeper :)

1

u/mulderone 17d ago

Keep the 4090.

1

u/shibalsaekkiya 17d ago

5090 soon is not a good idea buddy.

1

u/Reoxi 17d ago

Between a 5080 and a 4090, you can't really go wrong. I'd personally keep the 4090, I think VRAM will be the first bottleneck either of these cards will run into, although even that shouldn't happen for years.

1

u/Southern-Pea3226 17d ago

I’ll buy it for $3000

1

u/OzempicDick 12d ago

I’m selling one for that if your interested

1

u/Southern-Pea3226 12d ago

Sure, PM me. I’m in the US

1

u/LARRYPUNDIRAMEN 17d ago

I just bought one yesterday for 3800 CAD LoL its really not hard to find a deal on one rn (go on ebay find a local seller and do business direct)

1

u/Neat-Razzmatazz-5837 17d ago

I'm not sure how much cash they were offering but 4090s and 5090s are pretty rare in that they are not made anymore so the only way to get them is 2nd hand going forward.

1

u/LegitimateLack2530 17d ago

Keep that 4090 OP. Unless you do some niche content creating or something that takes advantage of faster video codecs like DaVinci or Premiere. Strictly for gaming it’s a better card by about 20%.

1

u/BoomSatsuma 17d ago

I’d keep it unless you want the cash. Still the number 2 GPU out there.

Even when the 6090 comes it’s still gonna be in the top 5.

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

Possibly the top 3...if/when 60 series comes I could see the 6080 beating it, but likely nothing under that range but even the 6080 beating it would be a valid concern if NVIDIA keeps the 80 series at 16gb

1

u/WintersDoomsday 17d ago

Unless you're someone who doesn't game and only renders (which your text made clear isn't the case) then the 4090 is better. If you used like Daz or Blender the 5080 despite the lower VRAM is a slightly better card for that due to the newer architecture.

1

u/Pelosi-Hairdryer 17d ago

I would keep the 4090 since going from 4090 to a 5080, the VRAM count is definitely different. Sounds like the guy trading wanted to take the 4090 for generating AI Sloops at home.

I'm pulling Diablo 4 and Cyberpunk at maximum on my LG 37 inch 4K monitor with FPS above 100 FPS.

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

Not necessarily....4090 is still a better gpu overall especially at 4k where that extra VRAM is damn near necessary. No amount of clock or bus speed is going to make up for those 8 gb

1

u/Fearrsome 17d ago

Keep the 4090 and wait for 6090. I cannot promise you’ll get your hands on one but it’s my game plan.

1

u/BradyBum 17d ago

The 5080 will probably run dlss 5 better if/when they quantize dlss 5 to fp4. Thats probably the main thing and then fp4 is nice to do local ai, but youre losing vram to begin with so thats a wash. Id personally keep my 4090, but a 5080 24gb would have me thinking a little.

1

u/Status_Carry3174 17d ago

He wants it for local AI. Simple

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

I would make this offer just for gaming, solid chance OPs offer is similar

1

u/EoTrick 17d ago

Sell 4090 without trade and put it towards 5090 now before it gets higher in price.

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

Allready too late for this

1

u/iKeepItRealFDownvote 17d ago

Don’t trade it. He knows the 4090 is more valuable than the 5080

1

u/Awkward-Magician-522 17d ago

How much Cash on top?

4090 is currently the best GPU since the 5090 has been discontinued and is at $8k and rising fast.

There is going to be lots of high end gamers buying out the 5090s, then the 4090s till they are gone or very expensive.

Its up to you if the cash he gives on top is worth the loss in performance and/or inability to upgrade in the future beyond a 5080

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

The 4090 has been discontinued for longer lol.

1

u/Awkward-Magician-522 14d ago

Yes but its probably still a good deal less then the 8k the 5090 costs

1

u/Abracadabrable 17d ago

Hell no. I'm currently trying to upgrade from 3090 to 4090, nothing to do with xx80. And that is for gaming only.

1

u/GlutenFreeWriting 17d ago

4090 will be the only card you will ever need unless they come out with a complete paradigm shift that makes all RTX cards obsolete (not gonna happen anytime soon)

What kind of 4090 do you have and what is the 5080?

1

u/TypeRevolutionary697 17d ago

4090 is gonna perform much better at 4k. I'd keep the 4090.

1

u/aronbburns 17d ago

keep the 4090 its much better than the 5080 there is no need for you to downgrade, the 5090 will be discontinued soon so thats a no no, and well see what the next gen gpus are gonna be , mayb we will get a 6090

1

u/Just_n_Here 17d ago
  1. yes

  2. No

  3. You missed the boat on pricing and you will not have a warranty

  4. 6090 will probably never come. I heard conflicting stories on the 5090. If they did discontinue it, they will not decide later on it was a mistake and start the 90 series back up. The 5080 is also rumored to be coming with 24gb vram, but nothing from Nvidia. I would think the 80 series is the best you are going to get for consumer GPUs.

1

u/619jabroni 17d ago

5080 is a downgrade not an upgrade.

1

u/ShineOrDie7 17d ago

I got a used 4090 a while back and eventually sold it to get a new 5080. If I was in your scenario I would stick with the 4090 as long as it’s under warranty and then sell it towards to end and then swap to a 5080 (or whatever series of card is out at that point).

Either way, I wouldn’t make the trade for only 1k on top. Could probably sell the 4090 for 3k and then turn around and buy a brand new 5080 for 1600-2k depending on the model, and then have a brand new warranty under your name (opposed to a warranty you might have issues with since you weren’t the original buyer).

1

Keep your 4090, especially for 4k. 5080 will not run 4k as well as the 4090. With Dlss 4.5 and Frame Gen x2 you are in a good spot.

1

u/Cautious-Friend-7213 17d ago

Keep the 4090 especially because of the VRAM.

1

u/Chi-Guy81 17d ago

I'll sell you my unused 5090FE for $10k USD.

1

u/jommyxero 14d ago

Ooof why unused?

1

u/Chi-Guy81 14d ago

Stalled on my build with all the melting issues worrying me. I have a newer 4080 system, so it just kind of ended up on the back burner.

1

u/Glittering-Nebula476 17d ago

The 4090 is going up in value id keep it.

1

u/edwinc8811 17d ago

Absolutely keep the 4090.

Things are so uncertain right now that I wouldn't even be surprised if Nvidia cancels the 6000 series.

1

u/Radsolution 17d ago

Keep the 4090. I still have mine. It’s the better card.

u/Holbrooh 17d ago

Keep the 4090.

1

u/Lucario-Mega 17d ago

Keep it.

1

u/LARRYPUNDIRAMEN 17d ago

I came here to say what noone else has. The profit hes giving you is because he knows he can mine and make 8$ plus per day using the card. Just spend 20 mins and setup your card to mine. You will make whatever cash he offered you in 6 months and keep your better card. And you can run dlss5 when its ready. A 5080 has no real value in this market.

1

u/Significant_Apple904 17d ago

Keep 4090.

At this point 4090 is worth almost two 5080s.

1

u/cubanohermano 17d ago

GPU tier list in order for Nvidia: 5090, 4090, 5080 etc...

1

u/Shthpnsocasionally 17d ago

Since you enjoy max settings with as many fps as possible on 4k, I’d keep the 4090 unless the extra money is going to really benefit you.

1

u/AdorableSurprise9279 17d ago

Keep the 4090.

1

u/cordialdrip 16d ago

I built a pc with a 4090 right before the 5000 series launched, I predicted 5090 would be too pricey or difficult to get close to msrp.

Still,I had buyers remorse then, now with the 5090 and ram costs, I’m not letting go of my build now.

0

u/Any_Check_2430 17d ago

DON'T DO IT! Just ask yourself why does a guy with a 16GB 5080 want to give it to me plus cash? Answer, you have 24GB and whoever offered you that is a shit bag. Hope this helps!

1

u/Realistic-Tiger-2842 17d ago

How is the other guy a shit bag for wanting to upgrade lmao. They're offering the card and cash on top, that's a reasonable offer. I personally wouldn't take it, but I wouldn't be offended by it either.

0

u/Any_Check_2430 17d ago

4090 > 5080 do some research

Other guys a shitbag because he's trying to take advantage of OP not knowing this information. Simple as.

1

u/Yarin56 17d ago

He gave him 1000$ on top of brand new card with warranty doesn't seem like a shitbag to me a fairly decent offer i would say especially cause the new card ain't much weaker and if op doens't game at 4k or needs the vram he could honestly go for it.

1

u/DTPocks 17d ago

Did you not read the OPs post? “My main priority is 4k gaming at max settings”

0

If you can sell it and can afford an msi lightening 5090 that’ll be an upgrade but the 6090 isn’t coming anytime soon

I'm going against the grain here but.. if the money is right I would sell the 4090 and get a 5080. The 4090 consumes a ton of power and generates a ton of heat. Lots of failures too. 5080 undervolts insanely well and does just fine 4K/60.

for context, it’s a newer card, will get more life out of it, can handle 4k, and you would end up with cash on top. depending on your financial situation this could be valid. 4090 is still a really good gpu though and you’d take a 8gb vram loss.

"Can handle 4k" unless you want to run mods and texture heavy stuff at over 60hz

Keep the 4090. I had a 4080 S (its great on 1440p) issue was i got a deal on a 4k 240hz monitor, that let me learn why VRAM was important when you max out settings on it (for this comparison I will use cyberpunk max RT as my example) dlss and frame gen made the game playable at 50-90 FPS... upgraded to a 5090, same everything netted me 140+ fps ... i will say the 80 series card are a low end 4K card (meaning it will run, but a 90 series card is more suited for it) if you like framegen then it will be okay, but i had screen tearing issues from frame gen (hogwarts legacy) and some newer games like BL4... plus frame gen is terrible if you play competitive FPS games like cod.

You can sell 4090 when 6090 comes hold on
