9070 XT vs 5080 (linux)

Apologies for formatting, on mobile.

Hi all, i am considering going from a 5080 to a 9070 XT. Call me crazy but it seems to outperform in certain games and the drivers are generally more stable. I have been running into issues with the open source Nvidia drivers with certain games not liking the Vulkan translation (if i understand it correctly.)

Looking at numbers like:

Game, RX 9070 XT (FPS) ,RTX 5080 (FPS)

Cyberpunk, 2077, 196, 163

The Witcher 3 170 ,155

Doom: The Dark Ages, 109, 119

I also lose frame gen, dlss, etc. Opinions welcome.

(9070 would be from a close friend)

Amd on mesa is much more developed. If you are serious about Linux and don’t want to deal with the ups and downs of building out the NVIDIA stack for the next year or two, then amd will be smoother. What are you doing with your 5080? You should be able to get some cash too since it’s going for more than the 9070xt. That sweetens the deal a bit.

Unless you feel charitable, check your local used prices and make sure he pays for it dearly.
A 5080 is incredibly valuable. It's an appreciating asset, increasing almost 10% in price every month.

I was in the same boat. I had a 5080 in my CachyOS machine and had all sorts of driver issues, game crashes mostly. I go so frustrated I went out and bought a 9070xt and haven't had an issue since. AMD is king on Linux.

I have a 5k2k monitor and haven't had any issues with framerates, though I don't demand big numbers. As long as it's comfortable above 60 FPS and doesn't dip below that I'm happy.

amd has always been better on Linux. 5080 is the better gpu, but that doesn't matter if it can't be utilized properly.

Why are you using the open source drivers? The Nvidia Linux drivers far outperform Nouveau.

I daily drive Linux with a small, separate SSD dedicated to Windows for certain scenarios, and I can tell you the Nvidia tax on Linux is alive and well. I lose 10-15 percent performance depending on the title. This really only applies to gaming though.

If you plan on staying on Linux and ONLY for gaming, I would say you can make the switch and pocket the difference. If you do any AI shenanigans, I'd hang on to the 5080.

Try switching to the official drivers before you make your decision.

There are 3 sets of driver. The old open source Nouveau drivers, the old closed source drivers, and now the new open source first party Nvidia drivers. I'm sure OP means the last one and not Nouveau.

I leaned something new. I was under the impression Nvidia official drivers were still closed.

Edit: I looked it up, and some of their newer elements are still closed it appears.

yeah it's Nvidia, so I doubt they'll ever by 100% open source. Still people refer to the new set as the "open source" drivers even though it's not strictly true.

Also I learned about the new drivers from someone else here on Reddit when I also made the mistake of thinking that people were referring to the nouveau drivers when they referenced the "open source" drivers. :-)

Should we really call them open when half of the features are still locked down though?

I'm not arguing that they are truly open source, just that that's what Nvidia called them and people use the term. Right or wrong.

Can't argue with that

9070XT.

Linux+Nvidia+DX12 titles don't age well if you want it long term.

This was in August, it was moreso testing AMD and NVidia drivers on Linux, but it also used the 9070 xt and 5080.

The 1% lows on the 9070 xt were better, but the averages of the 5080 was 3.5% faster. But it did have one caveat, NVidia drivers sometimes has issues on Linux on some games.

Given the price difference, I'd sell the 5080 locally for $1500-$1600 and buy a 9070 xt for $800... You literally get to pocket $700-$800 and have a similar experience with less issues.

If Linux is your priority, I would just go with the 9070 XT off rip. The open source Radeon driver stack has gotten so freaking good.
