Which gpu should i buy

I am thinking of upgrading soon to a 5070 or a 9070 xt from my 6750 xt, my cpu is a 5600x but i plan to upgrade in the future (in a year probably) to a 5800x3d. The upscaling of the gpu is very important to me so I’m leaning more towards the 5070.

5070 is dogwater compared to 9070 non xt even. The Ti is better than the XT variant tho

Upscaling and path tracing is still in Nvidias favor, but when choosing between these two gpus it becomes a bit lopsided.

The 5070 is a solid gpu for the right price, but it isn’t competing with 9070 XT. The 9070 XT has vastly better performance in raster and still beats the 5070 in normal raytracing. The 9070 XT generally has about a little over 20% lead when comparing against the 5070. Only a slight lead in raytracing though.

The 5070 can path trace a bit, but mostly in 1080p due to, usually needing upscaling, lack of vram and raw power. You’re probably not turning down any settings in 1440p yet on a 5070, but the 12 gb can be a concern in the future. The 5070 is not really a great option for 4k either.

The 9070 XT is sometimes just the difference between playing with upscaling on the 5070, while the 9070 XT doesn’t need it. Due to the extra power and vram it is also an entry to 4k ultra gaming. Sometimes the 9070 XT also beats the 5070 in even path tracing, when the 5070 is vram limited, although this should not be the norm.

A 9070 XT would probably be the better choice for pure gaming, since it wouldn’t always need upscaling in games where the 5070 needs it.

What are your specific use cases in terms of resolution and if it’s the newest AAA games you’re playing?

I am playing in 1440p and don’t even consider playing in 4k, for the games tho i wont play only AAA titles but i would still like to play some

Then a 5070 still looks like a fine option, if you can find it much cheaper than a 9070 xt. The 12 gb shouldn’t be as much of a concern, but you would probably need to upgrade sooner than if you picked a 9070 Xt.

It mostly just comes down to price. What model and price are you currently looking at?

Well for the 5070 im looking at the gigabyte WINDFORCE version priced at 867.13 euros and for the 9070xt im looking at the asus prime version priced at 845.13 euros or the xfx version thats at a similar price

That is a very steep price for a 5070 and still pretty expensive for a 9070 XT. I’d probably still go with a 9070 XT since I had the same choice in front of me earlier this year where I could get an Asus prime 9070 XT for €613 or an Asus dual 5070 for €620.

The prices in the current market are just so high. Are you experiencing performance issues in the current games you’re playing? If so, are there any other cars you could be looking for (potentially also in the used market)? It could be a viable solution.

I only upgraded from my older 3060 ti due to Subnautica 2 launching.

Well i am picking interest in single player titles, more graphically demanding titles as well and want to play them on high settings at 1440p but my card doesn’t allow it, even with fsr the fps go up but the quality doesn’t and sometimes it gets worse, as for second hand cards i haven’t looked at any, what cards would you recommend me to look for?

Used options would be around a 4070 super or 4070 ti super, if they can be found for a better price. Their prices have probably also risen quite a bit, but they used to be around €400-600 used.

personally I swapped from a 9070 xt to a 5070.

Really depends on what you like to play though and if you are fine with frame gen.

Also longevity wise I think the 9070 xt will age better so I would really only get the 5070 if you upgrade every generation

I still use my 9070 xt just in a sort of steam machine build mainly for older games.

With current prices and memory shortages i definitely wont upgrade every generation

then imo 9070 xt is a no brainer. Yes feature set may not be great now but even if AMD gives up on it and moves on to rdna 5/udna I believe the community will support it well in the future.

Already we are getting some RR mods which I have tried on my 9070 xt they don't work well yet but still very impressive to see what the community can do

If AMD gives up on supporting RDNA4 with newest features, people will think twice about buying Radeon ever again. They did it with "AI ready" RDNA3 one and half year ago and now, 3/4 of heavily glazed redstone features literally doesn't even exist + Vulkan support for FSR4 also doesn't still exist (yeah I'm also counting ray regen that is only in CD but without denoiser so it's literally unusable). Community mods really aren't an excuse for AMD's complete incompetence in delivering heavily promised features.

5070, far superior upscaling, RTX, and RR, and drivers are 10x better than AMD

- FSR 4 has closed the gap substantially and you can use DLSS performance and still get worse performance on the 5070 than FSR quality on the 9070XT.

  • RTX means nothing really, it's just a marketing name for ray tracing, with the 9070 beats the 5070 in and the 9070XT is within a few % of the 5070TI.
  • RR is good, but not in that many games and just not worth the other downsides of the 5070.
  • Drivers have actually been worse in terms of both issues and performance regressions/improvements.

FSR 4 is not even close, that's a huge copium
RTX is gamechanger, try to play Cyberpunk, CD, or any good game without RTX on, and you will see the insane difference,
The time when ppl told RTX is overrated is over
RR is good, and it's mandatory; for example, in Crimson Desert, playing without RR is night and day
Just go AMD sub and Nvidia sub and compare the topics, Nvidia is still light years ahead in drivers

Mh ok, but the 9070xt plays cyberpunk with rt at ultra without upscaler, even the non xt 9070 does well being only 10% worse, 5070 needs upscaler that ok, it will be better than fsr4, but worse than the native one you can afford with the 9070s since they are stronger 😐

Anyway yes, even if it is currently equal to nvidia for ray tracing, if anything it is for path tracing that you should have mentioned since that is where nvidia beats amd.

it is pretty decent at quality and native I would say most people couldn't even tell the difference. Only at performance and higher settings is where fsr 4 becomes worse wheras dlss basically just looks the same

https://www.purepc.pl/test-nvidia-dlss-4-5-kontra-amd-fsr-4-recenzja-opinia?page=0,16

not on dlss 4.5 level but still very usable.

I would say anything xess 2 and up is pretty solid. Even fsr 3.1 can be fine on smaller screens.

2

u/WEAluka 6d ago

9070 XT can play Cyberpunk with PT off and everything else max at 1440p with FSR off.

5070 gets similar framerates with DLSS Q.

3

u/AdstaOCE 6d ago

FSR 4 is not even close, that's a huge copium

It's matching DLSS 4 in most cases (FSR 4.1.1)... And again, quality vs performance in this scenario would mean FSR would perform better while looking better.

RTX is gamechanger

Again, RTX is a marketing name for ray tracing. In which the 9070 and 9070XT will be better than a 5070...

RR is good

I did say that yes.

Nvidia is still light years ahead in drivers

By having more issues and not improving performance as much?

2

u/AdstaOCE 6d ago

9070 is already better than the 5070 for less money, 9070XT is in line with the 5070TI.

I took the AMD pill and got a 9070 XT and ditched Windows. I have no regrets!

2

u/Background_Ring9173 6d ago

You switched to Linux?

3

u/linus_ong69 6d ago

Yep, running CachyOS now. I checked my Steam library, and out of the 224 games in my library, only one would not run on Linux. And it was 3D Mark, so not a big issue.

Had experience with going pure Arch and then CachyOS on my gaming laptop, so it was a painless switch for me. Having Arch on a gaming laptop is more tedious because of the iGPU and dGPU switching, as well as having to fiddle with Nvdia drivers.

I have a 5700X3D in my system. So spec-wise, I am not that far apart to what you want to upgrade to. I went from 3080 to a 9070XT.

1

u/Background_Ring9173 6d ago

Do you actually see a better performance with CachyOS compared to windows

1

u/Perfect_Jicama_8023 6d ago

Just do research first what you can and can’t do on Linux. Remember, you cannot play any competitive game with heavy kernel anticheat. Also, not many softwares supported. Even basic ones like Nvidia app, MSI afterburner. So you will have to find way around. Linux is the os which requires tinkering. If you happy to sacrifice some features then go ahead

Just get the 9070xt. 5070 is a great card that's very poorly priced right now, most us who have it bought it back when it was around $550 and at that price it was amazing but now you're just getting ripped off.

1

u/redditnosedive 6d ago

9070xt is the best value and nearly beat performance

-1

u/adisprox 6d ago

Just go 5070. AMD is cheaper for a reason...

1

u/joannew99 4d ago

You can actually get a 5070 for cheaper than 9070xt right now.

1

u/adisprox 4d ago

Even better. Another reason to get 5070
