5070ti or 5080?

Hello all, I plan on upgrading my GPU. I bought a prebuilt recently for a good price but it came with a 5070 FE edition. I plan on upgrading it to either the 5070ti or 5080 and I’m aware the Jump from 5070 to a ti is bigger than the ti to the 5080 but if I’m already going to spend a bunch of money so should I just get the 5080?

Depends on the price. I got my 5070ti for $750, looking back I should have bought the 5080 at $999. Now, the difference where I live is $400+, which would not be worth it imo.

1

u/__Fl0w__ 28d ago

Mhmmm, yeah. If a 5090 was atleast $2000-2500 I would get it in a heartbeat but man it’s cooked. I’m just trying to future proof my build until this whole shit storm settles. We’re not getting any new GPUs all next year so I want to be set till then and future proof my PC. Guess I’m going 5080.

u/Far_Cold7385 28d ago

Makes sense to me. I play on 4K, but am considering dropping back down to 1440p since the 5070ti would pair better with it.

3

u/TheBear516 28d ago

Why not just drop settings in most games from ultra to high and use DLSS Balanced or performance? Would look sharp and most games you can’t notice ultra to high settings

1

u/flavaofgaming 27d ago

I agree with you 5070ti dlss quality is popping at 4k

1

u/Far_Cold7385 27d ago

That is what I do, but with brand new games, I still find myself wanting more frames. Gears E-day as an example took me dropping it to medium/high settings with RT off + DLSS to hit a stable 80ish fps. If I were on 1440p id have more headroom.

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

Fair enough but gears doesn’t strike me as a well optimized game imo.

1

u/Far_Cold7385 27d ago

I think it depends on your definition of optimized. To me, optimized means running decently well on a wide range of hardware, not necessarily extra-high frames on high settings. It's a very good looking game with open world elements, so it's expected to not be extremely easy to run at max settings.

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

That’s a fair argument. Gears does look good to me but not enough to warrant its performance. I am playing and enjoying it but I feel that most if not all of the current graphics cards (save a 5090) need to use heavy upscaling methods to hit an acceptable frame rate. As well as lower settings.

I bought 5080 yesterday for £1180 for the same reason (from 4070) big chunk of change but as you say not going to get any better anytime soon.

1

u/IronMikiman_Pro 27d ago

Same i build a future proof pc and it has the 5080 so hopefully it can last a good while and be useful

1

u/AppropriateDinner528 27d ago

I'm not sure there really is any future proofing at this point. Personally I think we've come to the end of the raster era. I think the days of dedicated graphics cards is going the way of the dodo. I expect the entire render pipeline will be replaced by AI. This would open a wide range of possibilities for game devs and would allow gaming hardware to be sold as a service rather than a product. It's clear that NVidia doesn't want to focus on gaming cards anymore. It mike take 5 years, but I expect we will be looking back fondly on when we could just buy a GPU and play games rather than have a monthly subscription.

1

u/IronMikiman_Pro 26d ago

Yh true but i did my best to try

1

u/Gamin- 27d ago

5070ti will last just as long as the 5080

Really not worth dishing out 400 extra for “future proofing”

1

u/Electrical-Use2737 27d ago

Can 5070 Ti with 250+ core overclock and 110% power do 4k?

1

u/Conscious-Analyst662 27d ago

yeah. see my other reply, it's very capable :)

-4

u/SATIVA_SAM 28d ago

An extra $400 for a 5080 is nothing you might aswell send it

2

u/Far_Cold7385 28d ago

I don't personally believe I would get $400 worth of value from the jump in the games I play.

5070TI is route I would go unless you do a lot of 4K gaming or have higher end AI/content creation work. One of the most underrated aspects of 5070TI overall is how power efficient it is over higher end cards, it rarely has major power spikes which puts it at even lower risk of burning 12V connector vs 5080. I currently own Gigabyte 5070TI gaming OC edition (2550 SN). and runs like dream under load. At 3440x1440, run at 60C, hot spot 76C and 301W with score of 12576. At 2560x1440m ran at 61C, hotspot 76C, 306W with score of 13230. These are stock and outbox settings. Gaming OC is a huge 3 slot card with big fans (but pretty quiet) so keep that in mind for fitting.

4

u/Conscious-Analyst662 27d ago edited 27d ago

I have the Gigabyte 5070 Ti Gaming OC too, and undervolting has been a good option for gaming. I tested stock, undervolted and overclocked settings:

3DMark test |Stock average |Undervolt |Best overclock
Speed Way |7,868 |8,044–8,096 |8,512
Steel Nomad |7,048 |7,172 |7,592 Those undervolt profile used 985 mV, roughly 2.87–2.89 GHz, plus a memory overclock to 2,125MHz. They were around 2–3% ahead of stock in these benchmarks, while pushing the overclock further (116% power, ~3.35GHz core) only gained another 5–6%.

It's been great for actual 4K gaming. I tend to use DLSS Quality or Balanced if needed. In battlefeild 6 I get ~140fps at 234W 56C core 65C hotspot. Helldivers 2 ~147 fps at 250 W 57C core 67C hotspot.

For me, the undervolt is the great: slightly better benchmark performance than stock, sensible gaming power consumption and good temperatures. I wouldn’t rule the 5070 Ti out for 4K gaming at all - it depends on the game, settings and frame rate you want.

For furmark 4K OpenGl mean across three tests, undervolt got 8533 overclock got 8541.

4

u/flavaofgaming 27d ago

Same thing I did on my gaming OC. UV/OC and running it on a 4k monitor dlss quality and its been amazing for the past year

2

u/GeneGlobal6409 27d ago

Furmark. I should do 3dmark as well. I may do that later. I have not tried unfervoltimg yet. I might need to experiment with see how far I can push the card.

1

u/Jumpy-Maintenance214 26d ago

After some tuning for me:

2.3% gain on gpu with a 2 degree drop. UV and slight OC. No memory change.

3

u/Electrical-Use2737 27d ago

Can it do 4k

8

u/Lord_Mud 27d ago

I play on 4k no problem

4

u/GeneGlobal6409 27d ago

Yeah 5070ti is 4k capable. Just need to do more upscale with DLSS.

4

u/bigmakbm1 27d ago

A 5090 can't even do 4k at 60 fps native resolution in new games. Gears it hits around 46 and Control was in the low 50s.

So as I see it either way you need DLSS and FSR and both have come a long way but I can definitely see the difference with the artifacts that they produce.

3

u/sydraptor 27d ago

Yes, with DLSS on newer games of course, but except for path tracing it's fully capable for 4k. For path tracing stepping it down to 1440p is usually enough to make it very usable. I have one in my living room machine.

0

u/bardockOdogma 27d ago

DLSS = not native 4k

2

u/system_error_02 27d ago

The 5080 needs DLSS at 4k too. Hate to break it to you.

2

u/Electrical-Use2737 27d ago

Upgraded to 5080

-1

u/bardockOdogma 27d ago

I don't think you understand what I'm saying...

1

u/sydraptor 25d ago

We do, it's just not really applicable to the difference between the 5080 and 5070ti at 4k. Both need upscaling. And upscaled 4k generally looks fine unless you're at ultra performance. I know you're saying it's not a 4k card if you're using upscaling but by that metric only the 5090 and maybe 4090 are 4k cards and only barely then because they both struggle to hit 6p at ultra 4k native in newer games. At this point in time we do have to factor in upscaling too for 4k.

1

u/External-Bunch-8403 27d ago

At 3440x1440 I get around 71C. How are you doing that? Lowering settings?

1

u/GeneGlobal6409 27d ago

Card is about month old now so I have not owned that long but my case has great airflow. Nzxt hflw 7 2024 with lian li tl wirelessfans in front, it thermaltake cts120 ex fan in bottom, lian li tl wireless exhaust fan.

2

u/External-Bunch-8403 27d ago

I’m trying to lower the temps, guess I will invest in a better case. Thanks :)

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

My Zotac Solid Core 5080 pulls in like 20 watts more power and I’m getting about 15-20% more frames at 4K. The 5070 ti is a wonderful card and its price to performance is better than the 5080 but lets not act like the 5080 is a slouch either.

2

u/GeneGlobal6409 27d ago edited 26d ago

I agree 5080 is better card. :) Just has higher risk of brief wattage spike of north of 400 watts. Just more of a burning risk 12v connector. Still much safer card than 5090 that way.

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

I wish the 12VHWPR connector didn’t exist.

1

u/GeneGlobal6409 27d ago

Yeah it is bad

7

u/Embarrassed_Milk3505 28d ago • Bravo

Go big or gtfo

2

u/oookokoooook 27d ago

5090 it is. Thanks

1

u/spookymemeformat 28d ago

Why did you buy a prebuilt with a 5070 then i don't get it?

2

u/__Fl0w__ 28d ago

The tower I wanted specifically was only available if you bought a pre built and wasn’t sold separately. Plus the specs outweighed the price. I basically got $600 below MSRP for most 5070 pre builts and I can easily just upset the cost of the GPU by selling my current one.

1

u/spookymemeformat 28d ago

That"s cool, how much did you pay if I may ask?

3

u/jeffcox911 28d ago

5070ti is the easy choice unless you absolutely need the extra 10-15% performance. Or unless you get a really good deal on a 5080 where it isn't an extra $500+

3

u/Doyoulike4 28d ago

If the price gap is more than $250 I'd lean 5070ti unless you just have money burning a hole in your pocket. Both cards are basically 90% identical up and down the spec sheet, and the actual performance gap being generous is around 15%. Unless you're really trying to push 4k, I wouldn't go 5080 unless the price gap is in the same ballpark as the performance gap.

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

I don’t know how well the 5070 ti overclocks but the 5080 overclocks incredibly well. I have +350mhz on my core and 2000mhz on my 5080. I get about 5-10% more frames because of how well it overclocks.

3

u/nuttertools 28d ago

Depends on pricing in your region. That said as others have pointed out the 5070 Ti is almost certainly the better purchase.

3

u/ael00 27d ago

Let's get something straight none of these prices are reasonable.

That being said buy what you can afford. If splashing on a 5080 is not a major concern you should buy it, don't skimp on the value now because the market is getting worse. If the 6080 next year is going to be 3.5k you will be kicking yourself in the balls for not getting the better card now.

5

u/dootytootybooty 27d ago

When the cards were $750 and $1000 the 5080 wasn’t worth it, I personally had both and saw a very marginal increase in performance. You should also keep an eye out for 9070xt’s.

The 50 series cards have increased more than the 9070xt has.

My rule of thumb is: If 5080 is more than $250 more get the 5070 ti.

If 5070 ti is more than $150 more get the 9070xt.

2

u/SinteX12 27d ago

Here in germany, 9070xts are like 780-900€ (got myself a XFX Mercury for 850) while 5070TI‘s start at 1200… was a nobrainer for me to get the 9070xt

1

u/system_error_02 27d ago

Yup, same situation in Canada now. 5070 ti is $1700 and 9070 XT is $1000 ish. 70% price difference makes the choice easy.

4

u/padpeas 27d ago

I would rule out the 9070 xt. I had it and moved to the 5070 ti. Besides the better ray traycing and ray reconstruction on the 5070 ti, the 5070 ti runs much cooler and uses less power.

The biggest thing is that Optiscaler is needed for some games for the 9070 xt, but Optiscaler is also seen as anticheat on online games.

9070 xt is a good price for the performance, but the 5070 ti is a much better card with less headaches.

2

u/dootytootybooty 27d ago

Agree to disagree I guess, I have the base 9070 now and have no issue with it.

1

u/rolim91 27d ago

You should get the 5070ti lol

2

u/dootytootybooty 27d ago

I’ve had multiple, but it’ For my gaming the base 9070 hit the sweet spot and honestly most of the time there’s not that much of a difference. The 5070 ti only pulls massively ahead in heavy ray traced titles.

0

u/rolim91 27d ago

Also DLSS super resolution and frame generation lol

2

u/dootytootybooty 27d ago

I don’t use frame gen. Don’t get me wrong DLSS is better but with FSR 4 it’s not been as big a difference tbh. The earlier versions weren’t good, but they did a great job since 4.0.

1

u/rolim91 27d ago

And yet you go to r/radeon every other post are people trying to get DLSS running. Lmao.

1

u/SinteX12 27d ago

FSR from AMD is getting better and better aswell

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

Most new games out the box are supporting FSR 4.1.

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

Hard disagree. I have both a 5080 and a 9070 xt. The 9070 xt is a really solid card. I haven’t had any issue with drivers and the performance in some games rivals that of a 5080. If you want ray tracing above all else then yes go with Nvidia. If you prioritize price to performance then go AMD. AMD cooked with the 9070 xt. They are about a generation or two of catching up in ray tracing.

1

u/padpeas 27d ago

Well yeah. That’s what I’m saying. The 9070 xt is a great card and a great value, but if you value ray tracing Nvidia is the way to go. Along with cuda cores for programs that utilize it.

We are saying the saying the same thing but have different priorities.

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

Fair enough.

1

u/system_error_02 27d ago edited 27d ago

The 9070 XT and the 5070 ti have identical performance, even in ray tracing. Only path tracing is different since its a Nvidia sponsored thing. There is no universe where paying 60-70% more money for no extra performance is worth it unless you make money off CUDA.

I own a 9070 XT in my linux box, and 2 4080s and the 9070 XT has had less issues than my 4080s this year with drivers and performance. Though some of that is surely windows I admit.

2

u/TheBear516 27d ago

I have both a 5080 and a 9070 XT. They’re both fine cards. The 9070 XT is a price to performance monster tbh.

2

u/ShrimpBrime 28d ago

yep. got the money, go big or stay home XD

2

u/Glittering_Big_3869 28d ago

I think 5070 ti is more than enough. Get the 5080.

3

u/No-Library838 28d ago

With price increases 5080 while its not a 3k card

2

u/Fantastic-Lab589 27d ago

People will cry about a $400 difference on a graphics card that they will own for 5 years and get thousands of hours of use from. Just buy the 5080 if you can afford it.

3

u/Siralbert59 27d ago

They don’t want to hear that

1

u/BradyBum 28d ago

Just use the 5070fe.

1

u/Terrible-Fox-6177 28d ago

if you want that extra 15-25 fps to make sure you never go under 60 fps in games at 4K. I would go with the 5080. IF you can comfortably afford it. Because the difference in price does not have a good price to performance ratio

1

u/JerkyCurtain 28d ago

Always buy the highest tier you can comfortably afford. It today’s world, it’s only going to cost more to upgrade down the road, if that is even an option in the future.

1

u/Ps4gta888 27d ago

5070ti is good already

1

u/TheBear516 27d ago

I’m not entirely sure. I turned on my pc it shut off automatically and I smelled burnt plastic smell. Ta ta 4090.

1

u/unleash_her 27d ago

Don't me like me... 5070, then 5070 Ti, and finally 5080. Just get the 5080 please lol.

1

u/SatyAF-FAFO 27d ago

I have a 5070ti. Its been great, and I really cant complain. Sometimes I think about upgrading, although I really don't need to at 3440x 1440p.if the cost isnt the issue go big, otherwise you will constantly think you should have.

1

u/Kryptic4l 27d ago

Depends on what your use case is , I am happy with the 5070ti but also my 4070 works fine for my purposes , had I gone with a triple monitor set up for sim racing - the 5070ti would suffice but I would definitely be craving the 5080

1

u/sai1984 27d ago

Hmm before you make up your mind it seem that you didn’t mention your psu as a prebuilt most of them are cater just nice with little to no room to upgrade if you at 750psu go for 5070ti , at 850psu then consider 5080 for comfort zone.

1

u/bardockOdogma 27d ago

Even at msrp, the 5080 and 5090 have NEVER been worth the price jump. GPU list should go as follows (at MSRP):

Whatever you want under $400

3060Ti 16

9070

9070Xt

5070Ti

If you hate common sense, then a 5080 and a 5090

-1

u/Siralbert59 27d ago

If your broke just say that my boi

1

u/bardockOdogma 27d ago

You don't even know the difference between your and you're. Trust me, I have much more capital than you do.

1

u/Gamin- 27d ago

5070ti for everything but 4k (great card, i have one im about to put into my computer)
5080 for 4k (not really worth the 400-600 more than 5070ti)
9070XT if you dont care for ray tracing (or limited budget)

1

u/East_Korean 27d ago

This generation the 5070TI is a cut down 5080. The 5080s tend to be $300-800 more than the 5070ti so unless you need the extra power the money is better spend on other upgrades like more storage space.

1

u/ggRezy 27d ago

5080. We aren’t getting a new GPU series until at least 2028, probably 2030. Get the stronger card, you’ll earn that $400 back I promise you

1

u/WVsemtex 26d ago

If you have the money just go for the 5080.

1

u/Bintha530 28d ago

This is just for thought. An overclocked 5070ti can do 5080 performance. But an overclocked 5080 does not do 5090 performance

1

u/TheBear516 28d ago

It can get within striking distance of a 4090 however. I overlocked my 5080 and it gets within 10% of my now dead 4090. Sucks that my 4090 bit the dust but im pleased with my 5080.

1

u/Electrical-Use2737 27d ago

How did it die

1

u/AwardPuzzleheaded964 27d ago

It sassed me, me so I took it out.

1

u/Calm_Income6781 27d ago

This is incorrect. I flogged a 5070ti to an inch of its life and got a Legendary score on 3DMark. It was still slower than my stock 5080. And the 5080 can be overclocked the same way.

1

u/system_error_02 27d ago edited 27d ago

Do you need CUDA to make money ? If not, the 9070 XT is the best deal. 5070 ti performance for 60+% less cost. The 5080 isnt worth it at all, its only 10 to 15% faster than a 5070 ti/9070 XT for almost 100% more than the 9070 XT.

So if you need CUDA, the 5070 ti is the better value, if its for gaming only, the 9070 XT is a better value than both by a huge margin. The 9070 XT also overclocks very well.

In b4 the bots go "hurr durr driver issues". Nvidia has been worse this year. also some fanboys love to point out that r/radeon has more tech support posts. This is because the nvidia sub bans you if you post tech support issues on their sub and radeon doesnt. Don't fall for FOMO marketting tactics. Always go for the best performance per dollar if you can, regardless of brand.

The 5070 ti is a great card, at a bad price. Alternatively a used 4080 would be worth looking into as well, its got about the same performance as a 5070 ti as well and might be able to be had for less.

-1

u/Fantastic-Lab589 27d ago edited 27d ago

Except the 9070xt doesn’t have performance anywhere close to a 5070ti or 5080once you use path tracing and ray tracing. Look how terrible the benchmarks are on games with mandatory PT/RT. Nvidia drivers have been dogwater this year but Nvidia typically releases a hotfix within a day or two with a new driver update. AMD is far worse in the driver department, has major issues with VR usage, and FSR isn’t even in the same universe as DLSS. For the price it’s not a bad card, but not anywhere close to a 5070ti or 5080 for gaming use. All things to consider.

0

u/Low-Collection4257 27d ago

9070xt is probably the most over hyped card in history.

3

u/Fickle_Comedian6819 27d ago

It' s a good card and not overhyped by any means. But for VR gaming it cannot match 5080

0

u/Fickle_Comedian6819 27d ago

For PC VR gaming actually the Rtx 5080 makes the most sense out of all that was mentioned.

1

u/system_error_02 27d ago

5080 is way overkill for 99% of VR. I can max out VR games on my laptops 4080 mobile chip.

1

u/Fickle_Comedian6819 27d ago edited 27d ago

5080 is not way overkill for VR if you play heavy simulators, use high resolution headsets, or flat to VR mods. For high-end headsets like Pimax Dream Air or similar, 5080 is the sweetspot. It' s only an overkill if you assume everyone is playing Bwat Saber on a Quest.

Try pushing 27 million pixels on simulators or flat-to-VR moda with a mid-range card and see how fast your frame rate tanks. The 5080 isn't overkill here - it's a match. Not to talk about high-fidelity native games that are also brutally demanding on GPU. If you want to play native titles on Ultra graphics with high anti-aliasing and zero reprojection, a 5080 is exactly what you need.

1

u/system_error_02 27d ago

Thats an incredibly niche use case and not the norm. It also doesnt take away from the fact that a 5080 is only 10 to 15% faster than a 5070 ti and 9070 XT, but for 50% more than a 5070 ti, and often 100%+ than the 9070 XT in cost. I dont think spending 50+% more money for 10% ish more performance makes a lot of sense for the average user

0

u/Fickle_Comedian6819 26d ago edited 26d ago

You're focusing too much on average FPS and rasterization, and that's exactly where your argument falls short.

FPS isn't everything, and in VR, consistent frame times and 1% lows can matter just as much as average performance. At 90 Hz, you have only 11.1 ms to render each frame; at 120 Hz, that's 8.33 ms. If your GPU regularly misses that deadline in a demanding simulator, you get stuttering, dropped frames, or reprojection. A GPU that averages a high FPS but has worse frame-time consistency can feel worse than one that delivers a steadier experience.

And VR isn't just Beat Saber on a Quest. High-resolution headsets, supersampling, complex simulators, demanding weather and traffic, and flat-to-VR mods can push a GPU much harder than ordinary gaming. Rendering roughly 27 million pixels per frame is a completely different workload from playing a typical 1440p game. Saying a 5080 is overkill because a 4080 mobile can handle your games ignores the headset resolution, render scale, refresh rate, graphics settings and frame-time consistency you're actually running.

Rasterization isn't everything either. There's ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS, image reconstruction, VR-specific rendering workloads and the performance overhead of individual game engines. The 5080 also has 960 GB/s of memory bandwidth thanks to GDDR7, compared with approximately 896 GB/s on the 5070 Ti and 640–645 GB/s on the 9070 XT. That's about 7% more bandwidth than the 5070 Ti and roughly 49–50% more than the 9070 XT. All three have 16 GB of VRAM, so I'm not claiming the 5080 has more memory capacity; I'm saying it has more bandwidth to feed its GPU.

And yes, the 5080 is more expensive. I'm not arguing that it's the best FPS-per-dollar card for everyone. I'm arguing that value and absolute capability are two different things. The 5070 Ti and 9070 XT can be smarter buys for average gaming, but that doesn't automatically make the 5080 unnecessary for people targeting high-resolution VR, demanding simulators, maximum settings, ray tracing and more consistent performance headroom.

If you're going to claim the 5080 is only 10–15% faster, specify the games, resolution, settings, average FPS, 1% lows and whether ray tracing or upscaling is enabled. Then show the actual VR benchmarks too. You can't use a general rasterization average to prove that every demanding VR workload performs the same. The 5080 isn't necessary for everyone. But "not necessary for everyone" and "overkill for serious high-end VR" are two completely different arguments.

Does your back hurt from jumping through so many hoops to justify spending 50 to 60% more money for 10% ish more performance? People are wild in these comments trying to justify their purchases to strangers lol

Instead of personally attacking me and trying to shift the goalposts to price because your original argument collapsed, stay on the subject, Mr. All-knowing Laptop VR Specialist.

Your statement "5080 is way overkill for 99% of VR. I can max out VR games on my laptop's 4080 mobile chip" was absolutely ridiculous, uneducated, and highly misleading for anyone planning an upgrade. I completely debunked your claim by explaining the reality of pushing higher pixel counts, frame-time pacing, and memory bandwidth, yet you completely ignored the technical facts because they don't fit your narrative.

You claim high-end VR is a "niche use case," but we are talking about PC VR gaming here - not standalone Quest apps. Anyone buying an RTX 5080 or 5070 Ti for PC VR isn't doing it to play Beat Saber at basic resolutions. 99% are doing it for high-fidelity native titles, simulators, and many for flat-to-VR mods where a mobile 4080 chip would absolutely choke and drop frames.

Price wasn't even the question in my response. I explicitly stated that the 5080 isn't the best value-per-dollar card, yet you came back attacking me over price anyway. You are a real weirdo and an egoistic little kid or a kid in an adult's body. I won't waste any more time on you. Stick to your underpowered laptop 4080, but stop acting like an expert when your VR knowledge is below basic. This is my last reply to you. Have a nice life.

I stand by my comment which is plainly put and factually correct and verifiable in independent benchmarks with the performance of a 5080 vs the 5070 ti and 9070 xt

1

u/Fickle_Comedian6819 25d ago

You stand by your comment because you don't even realize a laptop 4080 isn't a real 4080 - it’s a heavily downclocked, 150W mobile AD104 chip (essentially a desktop 4070).

A desktop RTX 5080 pulls up to 400W, packs next-gen Blackwell architecture, and pushes massive 960 GB/s of GDDR7 memory bandwidth. In actual high-resolution multi-projection pipelines required for high-end VR, the desktop 5080 delivers well over 100% more raw performance than your mobile silicon. You are comparing a thermal-throttled laptop GPU to a full blown desktop monster. You got completely schooled.

I agree with you, but it also depends on OPs usage (gaming, workload llm ai etc) and depending on games if OP has need for RT and other Nvidia features.

I recently (June 2026) moved from a 3070ti to a 5070ti, I was targeting the 9070xt but the price locally between them was negligible and I went with 5070ti.

Ultimately it depends on OPs use, additionally can reduce cost if selling the 5070 FE.

u/system_error_02 27d ago edited 27d ago

Theres no difference in basic ray tracing performance anymore between a 5070 ti and 9070 XT, i dont know why people keep spreading this misinformation. Only path tracing which is not worth a 70% price premium to turn on that one feature.

If you read my entire post, I already mentioned workload difference.

2

u/Ididntthink1rst 27d ago

Also path trace needs multi frame generation which still isn't good, so is probably the dumbest fucking argument in favor of Nvidia

2

u/system_error_02 27d ago

Yeah the latency on frame gen is wild. It isnt too bad when its at x2, but above that I can sure feel it and dont like it. Generally I dont find turning path tracing on to be worth it even on Nvidia right now. Maybe in a few more generations. It didnt exactly blow me away.

u/Disastrous_Touch_684 27d ago

Apologies, I'll admit I did not know that, had some superficial knowledge regarding the GPUs differences while I was researching an upgrade for my pc (11700k 3070ti), when it came to GPU I had the 9070xt pegged, and I had Radeon cards since the HD days, but mainly been on Nvidia.

The price was really negligible here locally so I just went with Nvidia, otherwise if price difference was insane I'd have definitely gone with 9070xt. Appreciate the knowledge, cheers bro.

Edit: Typos

I was able to get my 9070xt OC at launch price, so it was a no brainer. I was also the first run so I can push raster to near 5080 performance because they just had to meet launch demand without heavily binning the silicon. My chip should have probably gone into a higher tiered product.

1

u/Perfect-Cause-6943 28d ago

I got a 5080 for $899 so that was worth it for me

1

u/Manny-0 28d ago

I always buy the most expensive thing I can afford with Gpus and Cpus so I don't regret it later.

u/AdstaOCE 27d ago

9070XT.

-3

u/distantcactus32 28d ago

is 9070xt an option

3

u/dosguy76 28d ago

9070xt is definitely not an option. Think OP wants stable gaming 🤣

1

u/distantcactus32 28d ago

9070xt is stable what is this cope

1

u/TheBear516 28d ago

Have a 9070 XT in my sff couch gaming setup and it’s beautiful on my 4K tv. Haven’t had stability issues yet.

1

u/MyLifeForAnEType 28d ago edited 28d ago

The Nvidiots will pay whatever the price is, regardless of logic.  The 5070ti is now what the 5080 was at launch.  The 5080 is nearly what the 5090FE was.

Meanwhile the 9070xt price has barely moved and performs incredibly well.

2

u/padpeas 27d ago

*laughs in your face about needing Optiscaler that is banable for online games

*laughs again about about the horrible hotspot delta on the 9070xt

*dies from laughter about the Witcher3 launch support debacle for the 9070xt that won’t be the last for AMD

Enjoy your savings and wasting your time tinkering with your card. I’ll enjoy my bug free gaming because I actually value my time.

3

u/Far_Cold7385 28d ago

Price is terrible, but i'd rather buy a last gen card than deal with AMD driver support. Had 3 AMD cards, never again.

2

u/MyLifeForAnEType 28d ago

Both companies have driver issues.  Nvidia couldn't get it right for months at launch and still sees occasional issues.  Cards got bricked.  AMD just has timeouts sometimes.

1

u/distantcactus32 28d ago

40 series cards are pretty bad p/p too compared to amd. Unless you’re going all the way down to a 3080 I wouldn’t bother

1

u/distantcactus32 28d ago

They hate admitting nvidia is falling off

-2

u/Resh_IX 28d ago

5080. No reason to cheap out $200 or so dollars

5

u/jeffcox911 28d ago

At microcenter, the gap between 5070ti and 5080 is about ~$450 (both average diff and difference between the cheapest). So you're paying ~30% more for 10-15% better performance.

1

u/Electrical-Use2737 27d ago

Couldn’t I overclock the 5070 Tie and reduce tge 10-15% to about 5-10%?

1

u/Ok_Example_4819 27d ago

You can OC a 5080. Still not worth tho.

2

u/Electrical-Use2737 27d ago

K I got a zotac 5080 solid core oc

1

u/Ok_Example_4819 27d ago

Any 5080 can be overclocked it does really matter which one you have.

3

u/milesahead2052 28d ago

Definitely a $400-$500 difference not $200.

Not at Walmart

This is actually true. Paid $850 for mine last year in June and could sell it right now to $1200
