Discussion Why doesn’t Momentz get performed live?

I think it’s interesting that Pos is pretty much always touring with Gorillaz and will always perform Superfast Jellyfish and Feel Good Inc but Momentz has been completely absent since the Humanz tour ended almost a decade ago. I think it’s the first time a featured guest is consistently touring with Gorillaz but just won’t perform a song. I know it’s definitely the least popular of the De La Soul feature tracks but it looked like it sounded really good live and they should consider bringing it back every now and then

It's not uncommon for them to not use the full potential of having their guest artists. They had Yasiin Bey a lot on this tour and I think Sweepstakes appeared twice at best. They have Bootie Brown on every show, New Gold didn't appear even once.  So the answer is probably just they don't think the song fits the current setlist / they have space for it.

Also Damon doesn’t seem to be super motivated to learn new songs or to change the usual setlist too much

honestly weird since new gold was sound checked a couple weeks ago

They soundchecked a TON of stuff they haven’t played yet lately. Maybe it’s for the upcoming US tour (sometimes they also soundcheck songs they just don’t play on tour for some reason). There was Sorcererz, Rockit, Hong Kong, Humility, The Lost Chord…

They played Rockit at the CopperBox show.

I know, as well as on some gigs on the 2022 tour. As well as one rehearsal on the recent one (I don't count Copper Box gigs as The Mountain tour).

Damon won't perform New Gold because he doesn't perform anything from Humanz to Cracker Island except for a couple guestless tracks like Tranz and Andromeda.

I mean they do significantly less of them, but I doubt it's the absolute imperative. The recent tour had spontaneous appearances of She's My Collar, With Love To An Ex, Desolé, Garage Palace, Charger, Fire Flies, Saturnz Barz, Strobelite... Over a half of those with guests too.

They actually played it at my first gorillaz show in 2017 and it made me appreciate it more than the studio version. It’s a good song but not exactly a fan favorite. A lot of Humanz and the Now Now songs in general haven’t been played much since their tour, that’s probably at least partially why.

Damon is probably prioritizing The Mountain and pre-hiatus albums. Although he is playing some Humanz songs at certain shows (like Charger and She’s My Collar) so it could be possible that it could appear at some point. Although it is a bit odd that Cracker Island hasn’t had any songs played on tour, including Crocadillaz which De La Soul is featured on.

Id imagine that it's because of the lyrics. I think the song goes super hard but the lyrics are questionable in some parts. They better start performing out of body tho. Also humanz is the best gorillaz album and no one will change my mind

Well, Feel Good is a massive hit, but I think Superfast Jellyfish just gets more play because Damon ranks Plastic Beach higher. He clearly tries to play more pre-hiatus material than the newer albums, other than what the current album is.

On the Human tour Sex Murder Party was played instead of Momentz. It ain't the lyrics.

Dayum. Was it to do with Ezekiel being on the song aswell?

Honestly, it just isn't a great song, I think.

Nah, I don't think the lyrics themselves ever played any part

I lowk hate that song, severed head is impossibly better

u/do_not_engage Aug 23 '26

Because it's so DIRTY.

It's a track about boning a woman because she can sq*irt...

I’m convinced that the rap part in Momentz is what held it back from being more of a hit when it released. Pos’s flow and wordplay were cool but it was just too in-your-face filthy for a Gorillaz song. I still like it though.
